James 3:1-12 An Unruly Tongue James 3:1-12 An Unruly Tongue Video 2

James 3: 1 3 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. Why warning about becoming a teacher? Jewish culture Teaching was a highly valued and respected profession Many wanted to become teachers Good to aspire to teach 3

Why warning about becoming a teacher? Generally Responsibility is great because Their words and example Affects others' lives. Especially with spiritual teaching Why warning about becoming a teacher? James uses the first person Includes himself No one exempt 4

Does judging teachers more strictly apply today? Yes. Basic Secular Wisdom but Those who wish to teach others Spiritually ought be judged more strictly than those following other professions. Judged Held to Higher Standard Matthew 18:6 (NIV) "If anyone causes one of these little ones-- those who believe in me--to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. 5

Why Then Teach? As Christians / Believers we are still judged (and all fail) but Christ stands in for us as the propitiation for our sins. Propitiation: a two-part act that involves appeasing the wrath of God and being reconciled to Him. Why Then Teach? Not fundamentally a Salvation issue (for those who are saved) Regret for not having served as faithfully as we would wish or responded well to Gods great gift of salvation 6

Luke 12:48 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.from everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. James 3: 2 2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check. 7

Is anyone perfect Rhetorical Question No, Jesus was the only perfect person. Anyone who is never at fault gains control of himself in other areas of life as well. Verse 3:2 / 1:4 "be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing" We know that we are incomplete and imperfect now, but this is not where we are going to remain. God is taking us to perfection that is full and complete. Perfection? Sanctification to Glorification 8

Justification Justification / Sanctification / Glorification Saved pronouncement to clear the guilty pardoned of any violation Sanctification -- Glorification -- Maturing continual process that conforms us into the image of the Son of God in Heaven After completion of our Christian life on earth not after finishing Sanctification God s Purpose for us Perfection Goal? Become his fully mature children Fully able to participate in a relationship of love with him Where we will have a deep sense of satisfaction in all of our life (NB - makarios - Blessed) 9

Perfection Goal? A perfect relationship with God overflows into perfection in our relationships with one another and with ourselves. Frees us to care for others and receive from others, to bless others and allow ourselves to be blessed by those that God brings into our lives. Application How can we move closer to perfection? - Sanctification Turn from those things that encumber us Turn from false idols Trust in God Hand more of our life over to him Transform what we say 10

James 3: 3-6 3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. Small Controlling Large What are they? Bit controls a horse. Rudder controls a ship. Spark sets a forest on fire. Tongue corrupts whole person. 11

Small Controlling Large All can have positive influence All can get you into trouble Small Controlling Large Likely severe local problem being addressed Satan uses the tongue to divide people and pit them against each other Hateful words are damaging because they spread destruction quickly (like a fire) and no one can stop the results once they are spoken 12

James 3: 7-12 7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. Examples Of An Untamed Tongue Gossip Putting others down Bragging Manipulating False teaching Exaggerating Complaining Flattering Lying Boasting Ridicule Sarcasm Praising evil deeds 13

Application What we say or What we don't say? Proper speech is not only saying the right words at the right time, also controlling your desire to say what you shouldn't. Verbal damage "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me." Is it true? NO -- Perhaps harder to heal than physical trauma 14

If no human being can control the tongue why bother trying? Because it IS guiding your whole person. Even if we can't achieve perfect control, we can still learn enough control to reduce the damage that our words do. It is better to fight a fire than to go around setting new ones. Application Power Of Words Used By The Holy Spirit Real faith uses the Spirit's power in words that... Build others up Speak the truth in love Compliment Forgive Comfort 15

Application Power Of Words Used By The Holy Spirit "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires" (1:19,20). Real faith knows when to hold its tongue. Application Do your words more often help than hurt? Do they reveal your true self, or do they conceal you from others? Do they hide God, or do they praise him? Do you say the same words when someone is present as when he's absent? Are you more likely to wield your tongue as a weapon of your flesh, or employ it as an instrument of the Spirit? 16

7/13/2015 James 3:13 4:12 Two Kinds of Wisdom / Submit Yourself to God 18

James 3:13 4:12 Two Kinds of Wisdom / Submit Yourself to God Video James 3:13-18 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show itby their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambitionin your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such wisdom does not come down from heavenbut is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. 19

James 3:13-18 17 But the wisdom that comes from heavenis first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercyand good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness. How has James described wisdom previously? Ability to make wise decisions in difficult circumstances Practical discernment (James 1:5-8) 20

What is the Evidence Of Wisdom? One's 'good life' Deeds done in humility. 'Earthly Wisdom?' Boasting about or denying Source.. Jealousy Envy Selfishness Unspiritual Demonic 21

Disorder Result of Earthly Wisdom?' Every Evil Practice Trouble 'Heavenly Wisdom?' pure friendly peace-loving considerate submissive kind helpful genuine sincere 22

What does Wisdom produce? Peacemakers who plant seeds of peace Harvest justice or righteousness. Galatians 5:22-23 Wisdom' 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, 23 gentleness and self-control Almost exactly the same characteristics that James says are in wisdom that comes from above. 23

Wisdom Paul 'fruit of the spirit' Loving Happy Peaceful Patient Kind Good Faithful Gentle Self-controlled James 'wisdom from heaven' Friendly Helpful Peace-loving Considerate Kind Pure Genuine Submissive Sincere James 4: 1-6 4 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. 24

James 4: 1-6 4 You adulterous people, don t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. Who is fighting and quarreling? You The Jewish Christians to whom he is writing All of us today 25

Source of Fighting? Envy Jealousy Wanting something you don't have Where does the spiritual battle take place? Within You.. "Only what you take with you. 26

Where does the spiritual battle take place? The Battle Within You.. In your mind. Tempting by the Devil Expression of Envy? Improper Proper Unspiritual Aggressive Cruel Praying to God for our Selfish Desires Pleasures Praying to God To meet our Needs Correct Motives Not our Wants 27

Adulterous People? Broken covenant between the Lord and the Jews that were led out of Egypt. Making of a new Covenant putting of the law into the hearts of the people through the Holy Spirit. Jeremiah 31:33-34 33 This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time, declares the LORD. I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 28

Jeremiah 31:33-34 34 No longer will they teachtheir neighbor, or say to one another, Know thelord, because they will all knowme, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more. God and the world? Matthew 6:24 (NIV) 24 No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. 29

God and the world? John 15:18-19 (NIV) 18 If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me (Jesus) first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen youout of the world. That is why the world hates you. NO! Can we love both God and the world? 30

1 John 2:15-16 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world.if anyone loves the world, love for the Fatheris not in them. 16 For everything in the world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life comes not from the Father but from the world. What happens if we try to love both? Foolish pride and selfish desires prevent us from loving God and receiving his grace. We actually become an enemy of God. 31

How can we avoid loving the world? James 4:6 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. Proverbs 3:34 34 He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed. Application Be humble How to avoid loving the world? Pray to God in our humility. Admit that we don't have the strength on our own to turn away from earthly values. Completely surrender to God and put ourselves in his hands. 32

James 4: 7-12 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James 4: 7-12 11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you who are you to judge your neighbor? 33

Ten Commands 1. Submit (or surrender) yourselves (to God) 2. Resist the devil 3. Come near to God 4. Wash your hands (or clean up your lives) 5. Purify your hearts 6. Grieve 7. Mourn (or be sorry) 8. Wail 9. Change your laughter (to mourning) 10.Humble yourselves (before the Lord) When Asked - Jesus was More Concise #1 of 2 What is the Greatest Commandment? Matthew 22:37-38 "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." 34

Matthew 22:39 Jesus was More Concise #2 of 2 "Love others as much as you love yourself." Matthew 7:1-2 Judging? 4:11-12 Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 35

Problem with Judging? Human Judging. Pride Arrogance Not keeping the law -- breaking it Only God can judge Making ourselves as God Psalm 94:1-2 Proverbs 6:16-19, 8:13, 11:2, 13:10, 16:18 Called to not Judge Judging Not called to ignore sin We are called confront sinful actions In a loving and Godly manner! 36

Judging You judge someone wrongly when you criticize him out of Jealousy Bitterness Selfish ambition Or some other sin Rather than seeking to build him in Christ James: Proverbs of the New Testament Starts 21 June, 2015 26 July 37
