WORD READING Genesis 9:8-17 8 God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. 11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth. 12 God said, This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. 17 God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth. L Word of God, word of life. C Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 25:1-10 L To you, O LORD, lift up my soul. C My God, I put my trust in you; let me not be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. L Let none who look to you be put to shame; rather let those be put to shame who are treacherous. C Show me your ways, O LORD, and teach me your paths. L Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long.
C Remember, O LORD, your compassion and love, for they are from everlasting. L Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; remember me according to your steadfast love and for the sake of your goodness, O LORD. C You are gracious and upright, O LORD; therefore you teach sinners in your way. L You lead the lowly in justice and teach the lowly your way. C All your paths, O LORD, are steadfast love and faithfulness to those who keep your covenant and your testimonies. *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION p. 205 *GOSPEL Mark 1:9-15 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. 12 And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15 and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. L The gospel of the Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ. CHILDREN S SERMON SERMON
HYMN OF THE DAY At the Cross There's a place where mercy reigns and never dies, there's a place where streams of grace flow deep and wide; Where all the love I've ever found comes like a flood, comes flowing down. At the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life. I'm in awe of You, I'm in awe of You. Where Your love ran red, and my sin washed white. I owe all to You, I owe all to You, Jesus. There's a place where sin and shame are powerless, where my heart has peace with God and forgiveness; Where all the love I've ever found comes like a flood, comes flowing down. At the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life. I'm in awe of You, I'm in awe of You. Where Your love ran red, and my sin washed white. I owe all to You, I owe all to You, Jesus. Here my hope is found, here on holy ground; Here I bow down, here I bow down. Here, arms open wide, here You saved my life; Here I bow down, here I bow. At the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life. I'm in awe of You, I'm in awe of You. Where Your love ran red, and my sin washed white. I owe all to You, I owe all to You, Jesus. *APOSTLES CREED p. 105 PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION (Prayer response: Hear Our Prayer ) TITHES & OFFERINGS
OFFERING SONG Thy Word Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. When I feel afraid, And think I've lost my way, still You're there right beside me. Nothing will I fear as long as You are near. Please be near me to the end. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. I will not forget Your love for me, and yet my heart forever is wandering. Jesus, be my guide and hold me to Your side; I will love You to the end. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. And a light unto my path, You're the light unto my path. *OFFERING PRAYER L Merciful God, C receive the sacrifice of our praise and thanksgiving and the offering of our lives, that following in the way of the cross, we may know the joy of the resurrection; through Christ our Lord. Amen. MEAL *CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS L God s bow has been hung in the clouds a unilateral disarmament in spite of our sin. God remains faithful to the covenant of steadfast love, even when we are unfaithful. Without fear, then, we confess our sins God of mercy, C we begin this Lenten Season in confession. We do not live according to your ways, but according to our own. We condone violence, participate in systems of injustice, and use power to our own advantage and at the expense of others. Forgive us, we pray, when
we are tempted to follow paths other than those you set before us. Teach us your commandments; help us to turn from evil and its many guises, and turn us toward your kingdom drawing near. In covenantal love, remember us, we pray. And be for us, once more and always, an ark of safety and new life. We ask this in the holy name of Christ. Amen. L As Noah and his family were brought safely through the flood onto dry ground, so also in baptismal waters we are brought from death into new life in Christ. Jesus Christ, who is at the right hand of God, forgives us and reconciles us and all things in heaven and on earth. C Thanks be to God for this good news! Amen! *WORDS OF INSTITUTION p. 108 *LORD S PRAYER p.112 INVITATION TO COMMUNION L This is the table, not of the church, but of God. So come, you who have great faith and you who wish you had more. Come, you who have been here often and you who have not been for a long time. Come, you who have tried to follow and you who have fallen short.
