FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH PLANO, ILLINOIS The Anchor VOLUME 25, ISSUE 9 OCTOBER 2011 We have lots of exciting things happening in October. I hope you will join us as we learn, grow and live out the life and mission to which God has called us. On Sunday October 2, we will have our Annual Planning Retreat, from 2 6 p.m. at the parsonage. This retreat is open to all members, but council and committee members are especially encouraged to attend. Join as we plan goals and activities for the coming year. On Friday, October 7, if the sky is clear, I will host a star party in the back yard of the parsonage, 7:30 10 p.m. I will have telescopes out and we should be able to observe the Moon, some star clusters and nebulae. Towards the end of the time, Jupiter and the Andromeda galaxy should be high enough in the East to be observed. Call the parsonage 630 552 8300 if you have any questions. We will have a Euchre Tournament, along with other games and refreshments on Sunday, October 9, from 3:00?? PM. Come and have a great time. Invite your friends to join you. The Food Resources Bank Harvest Festival will be held Saturday, October 15, beginning with worship at 10:00 a.m. The festival is a wonderful experience and Food Resources Bank is an outstanding Christian response to world hunger. For directions to the farm where the festival will be held, and for more information contact the church office. I have received a summons for jury duty the week of October 17. I won t know until that week how much of my time this will take. If you need to contact me that week, please call the church office and leave a message. I will check in with the office when I am able. Pastor s Corner Sunday, October 23 will also be Stewardship Sunday. Stewardship is a vital part of our Christian life. Stewardship is not just about giving money to the church. Stewardship is about how we respond with our lives to all that God has done for us and given to us. God gives each of us talents, abilities, passions and opportunities. How we use them, guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit that is stewardship. We ask each member to pray and consider how God is calling you to use your talents, abilities and passions to serve the Lord through the ministries of our congregation. While Stewardship is more than just giving money, stewardship certainly does include how we spend our money. We are called to give regularly, in response to what God has done for us and given us. We are called to give in proportion to what we have and what we earn. And we are called to give sacrificially. We thank you for your strong and generous support of our life and mission together. We will have Trunk or Treat with the Methodist and Baptist churches on Sunday, October 30, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. If you haven t come before, I encourage you to come this year. Bring your children or grandchildren in their Halloween costumes. Or bring your vehicle and candy. Decorate your vehicle if you wish. Have a great time! You may have noticed that the storage shed which used to be located just west of the Education wing is now in the corner of the parking lot. T HE ANCHOR PAGE 3 OCTOBER LIBRARY NEWS This month First Lutheran celebrates its 128th Anniversary. We also observe Reformation Day during October. In honor of these occasions, there are several books to display about out heritage. New to the library is the book, The Ultimate Gift by Rene Gutteridge. You may have seen this as a movie in the theater or on television a few years ago. James Garner and Brian Dennehy were two of the stars in it. It is the story of a young man who, in order to receive his inheritance, had to first complete twelve tests. When he completest he tests, he is not only wealthy, but has found the true meanin gof life. Glory by Lori Copeland was donated by Diane Kupp. This Christian romance takes place in Colorado in the 1800 s. Some of you may like the fact that it is a large-print edition. First Lutheran Fall Frolic and Feast I d like to thank everyone who volunteered and participated in First s 1st Fall Frolic & Feast, Saturday, Sept. 24th. It takes many to make an event happen and we couldn t have done it without participation or your help. PAGE 4 V O LU M E 2 5, I S S U E 9 Recipe Corner Baked Potato Soup from: Ruth Ann Hoehn ingredients: 4 large baking potatoes 4 slices bacon 6 c. milk ½ c. flour 4 green onions, sliced 1 ¼ c. shredded cheddar cheese ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper 8 oz. sour cream Cut cooked potatoes in half. Scoop out potato from skins; place in medium bowl. Discard skins. Instructions: Mash potatoes. Add potatoes, ba Bake potatoes in oven or con, 2 tbsps onion clices 1 cup of microwave. Cool slightly. Cook the cheese, salt and pepper to the bacon over medium heat until milk mixture. Cook and stir until crisp. Drain on paper towels; cheese is melted. Add sour cream; crumble; set aside. Combine cook and stir until soup is milk and flour in a Dutch oven; thoroughly heated. To serve, blend well. Cook over medium spoon soup into individual bowls heat about 15 minutes or until and sprinkle each with remaining bubbly & thickened, stirring onions and cheese. Makes 10 frequently. PAGE 6 BOOK CLUB NEWS The Book Club will meet on Wednesday, Oct 5, 2011 at 9:15 AM. The book for discussion is Silver Boat by Luanne Rice. VOLUME 25, ISSUE 9 Beginning on October 4 th, the Quilting Group will meet from 9:00 to ~11:20 each Tuesday morning. EVERYONE IS WEL- COME! It is a fun time, and it is very simple to tie the quilts, and we always take time for a coffee break and snacks. It's a great time for fellowship and service. Our goal each year has been to send 100 quilts to Lutheran World Relief. Come & help us reach that goal! Please consider joining the quilters This year, we are adding something new! We will be making lap robes, prayers shawls and baby blankets. If you knit or crochet (or want to learn), please join us. This will be a great project for those who find it difficult to stand! Ruth Circle will meet on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011 at 12:30 PM at Main Street Café. First Lutheran Youth are once again New Orleans bound! That s right, in July 2012 a group of youth and chaperones will be headed to the ELCA Youth Gathering! Having just recently attended a training session for youth leaders that are taking youth to the gathering, I cannot wait to hit the ground running with fundraising and planning. This is sure to be an unforgettable experience for those youth that attend. Come help us celebrate our official registration and kick off our fundraising efforts at our euchre tournament at 3 pm on October 9 th in the education wing. There is no entry fee, but food and drinks will be available for a free will donation. Hope to see you all there!! In preparation for our trip to New Orleans, we will be organizing several social outings with neighboring Lutheran churches that will also be attending the gathering. This will give everyone involved a chance to meet other people before we actually get to Louisiana. We will share tips, concerns, and general information all while getting to know each other a little better. My hope is that this will open the door for many more fellowship events with other Lutheran churches in the future. T HE ANCHOR Sunday School Snippets Trunk or Treat This year's Trunk or Treat is Sunday, October 30, from 1-3 p.m., in the Methodist Church parking lot. Plan to sponsor a trunk and watch for more details in the weekly bulletin and fliers will be sent home with Sunday School children. Student Information Forms The Sunday School office recently sent home student information forms with each student. Parents should complete these and return them as soon as possible. If you did not receive a form, contact the Sunday School office. There was also a secret pal information sheet that was sent home (unless children completed them at Sunday School). This information will only be shared with the student s secret pal and will help the adult secret pals as they purchase snacks and little gifts for the children. Secret Pals Will Be Assigned Soon Secret pals will be assigned in October and the adults will receive the name(s) of their secret pal(s) before Halloween. If an adult is still interested in signing up, the sheet is on the bulletin board or the Sunday School office door or contact Kathy Benoit. We will need extra people as new students enroll for Sunday School. Secret pals will anonymously support Sunday School students throughout the year and meet their "pal" at the Sunday School Awards Sunday in May. Thank you to all of our members who signed up to be secret pals for this school year. Students Sign Up! Students can help with worship services by serving as an acolyte, running the radio tech board, reading, helping in the nursery, etc. Contact the church office to volunteer! May God bless them as they read and study His Word. Musical Opportunities Sunday School children who are interested in music have opportunities to sing and play at First Lutheran.
