U N A B A P T I S T C H U R C H The Una Vision Volume 11 Issue 11 2018 November is a favorite month of mine. I have always loved the changing colors of the leaves and the crisp mornings. (True, it also means that it is going to get colder, but let s not go there!) November is also the month to celebrate Thanksgiving. Such a great time to be with family and friends around a great meal and simply enjoy to good things of life. Sadly, this will not be the case with everyone. In fact, last Thanksgiving my father passed away which made it a different kind of celebration. The truth is, we are to offer thanksgiving not because the circumstances are just right, but because our God is always God, and HE is always right. Too often we are thankful people because of how we are blessed. Now, don t get me wrong, I think Thanksgiving is a great time to recall all the good things that God has blessed us with but there is a word of caution. Our attitude of thanksgiving is not based upon what God has done for us, but who He is to us. We are not to be like Job s wife and get upset when life is upside down and turn November Newsletter From the Pastor s Desk our back on Him, but rather trust and believe that God is for us, not against us. Every day, not just a Thursday in November, we are to have a thankful heart because we know how desperately lost and sinful we are and how deeply and completely loved we are. It should transform our entire life. Here are some words from John Stott considering Romans 12:1-2 So we are to offer the different parts of our bodies not to sin as instruments of wickedness but to God as instruments of righteousness. Then our feet will walk in his paths, our lips will speak the truth and spread the gospel, our tongues will bring healing, our hands will lift up those who have fallen, and perform many mundane tasks as well like cooking and cleaning, typing and mending; our arms will embrace the lonely and the unloved, our ears will listen to the cries of the distressed, and our eyes will look humbly and patiently towards God. A transformed life will be a thankful life. Happy Thanksgiving! Pastor Larry NBA Toy Store Happy Birthday, Jesus! What, is it too early? Well maybe the Birthday wishes are early, but it is not too early to help the Nashville Baptist Association Toy Store. The NBA has for many years helped families in need with toys for the children at Christmas. Along with toys, the families hear the TRUE meaning of Christmas. We will be collecting NEW toys and NEW clothing at the display in the Connections Area for the Toy Store beginning November 4th through November 25th. Our pastors will deliver the toys on November 26th. The Toy Store needs gifts for newborn children through age eighteen. Invite family, friends and neighbors. Don t MISS it!!! JAM students arrive at 5:00 In October, Joy, Mark, Jim, Larry and I got to attend a children's ministry conference here in Nashville called MegaCon. It was excellent! Here are some of the things we learned from MegaCon about the importance of a strong children s ministry. 1. You are training the church of TODAY not tomorrow. 2. You are amazingly important to the church. 3. See the big picture, not just making it from week to week. 4. Equip parents. Come alongside them. 5. When you see a kid, you see a family. 6. Make sure you don't miss... prayer, passion, praise, the presence of Jesus and the power of God. 7. Have to understand who these children are... their background, their home life. 8. If your ministry closed down, would you be missed in your community? 9. There is no finish line.. so just start running. 10. We have 8 seconds to grab their attention. 11. IF WE WANT THE NEXT GENERATION TO KNOW WHO GOD IS, WE NEED TO POINT THEM TO THE WAY. 12. The largest mission field in the world is KIDS! Since kids under age of 13 are the ones most likely to make decisions for Christ, children s workers have a target on their backs because Satan wants to stop you. Please pray for our Sunday school teachers, Blast and JAM leaders. We REALLY do need your prayers. Thanks! 6)Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Trunk or Treat Oh what fun the kids and adults had at our annual Trunk or Treat. There was lots of decorated trunks and kiddies running around filling their sacks and buckets with candy and treats. This year we again gave out prizes for Best Costume and Best Decorated Trunks. Chelsea Bell is still the reigning champ of Best Decorated Trunk. She had a Drive-in Movie set up in her trunk with cars and speakers too. Carrie & Aaron Holladay gave Chelsea a run for the prize with their Kleenex vehicle taking Runner-up in Best Decorated Trunk. You might want to start working on your trunks for next year. The competition is getting tough. Our Best Costume award went to Wesley Cardnas this year. He sure was a cute little Werewolf. Pasiley Wandling was the Runner-up in her adorable Green Dinosaur costume. Una Craftapalooza Saturday November 10th 10:00am 2:00pm Join us for fellowship and to Christmas shop with church members and local vendors. Doughnuts and coffee provided by the USA Ladies! (while supplies last) Page 4 Our Una Family Loss On September 19th, we lost one of our Una Family members, Ms. Janice Polman. Ms. Janice moved from Texas several years ago and immediately made Una Baptist her home church. Ms. Janice was a wonderful friend to many and she will be missed. She had a talent for baking and crafts. For many years she baked banana bread loaves which we gave out on our Front Porch Visits on Connections Night. Several families enjoyed this gift from Ms. Janice and she and her banana bread will be greatly missed. VOLUME 11 ISSUE 11
