MUSINGS FROM EMILY Don t Move! I m giving Deacon Mike a break from the cave this weekend and would like to share a musing of my own. Hi, my name is Emily Jenks, a St. Bernard Parish Faith Formation Coordinator. Have you ever been walking down an aisle of mirrors in a store? Do you scurry down the aisle or stop and glance at yourself? I often find myself try to pass by as quickly as possible, not wanting to see my own reflection, perceived imperfections and flaws. I recently reflected on this as I read the book Tattoos on the Heart by Gregory Boyle. Boyle is a Jesuit priest who spent 20 years running Homeboy Industries, a gang intervention program in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. Boyle shares stories of unconditional love, joy, kinship and resilience that he encountered among homies living in the gang capital of the world. He tells the story of a young boy who sketched a rather unflattering portrait of himself. While sketching, the young boy tells Boyle don t move. This makes him chuckle and requires a second don t move from the boy. As Boyle reflects on the sketch, the boy reminds him that he moved. Boyle reflects on how the gang is a bastion of conditional love, but how Homeboy Industries became a community of unconditional love. Through our baptism, we are all marked for life with Jesus Christ and made sacred. We should look at ourselves in the mirror and see the sacredness of God reflected back at us. In moments when we want to quickly pass the mirror or squirm around the image of God, we need a community around us that is able to tell us don t move. Emily Jenks PRAYERS & SYMPATHY We ask St. Bernard Parish to pray for family and friends of Margaret Schneider and Eric & Becky Lindberg whose daughter-in-law has passed Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. FORMED As Catholics we need to evangelize by bringing the Gospel message to others. From OPENING THE WORD in FORMED there was a great acronym given for the word Gospel. G: God has created us in His image to be in relationship with Him now and forever. O: Our sins have separated us from God and we find ourselves in great spiritual battle with Satan. S: Sins cannot be removed buy our own efforts; we need a Savior. P: Paying the price for our sins - Jesus was crucified, died and rose from the dead, taking our sins upon Himself and is in Heaven preparing a place for us. E: Everyone who places their faith in Jesus will have abundant life here and eternal life in heaven. Entrusting oneself wholly to God and believing absolutely what He said. L: Life - Life eternal in heaven with God, His angels and Saints. Jesus FORMED us to be His light in this world. What a message! EVENTS Angel Tree St. Bernard Parish Social Justice Committee is sponsoring our annual Angel Tree Christmas in conjunction with the Salvation Army. Starting this weekend, November 10-11, our Angel Tree will be in our lounge with a child s name attached to an ornament along with their Christmas wish. The suggested gift level is from $50-$100. If you would like to pair up with a friend or family to purchase the suggested gift, that would be wonderful. Smaller donations of cash are also accepted. The cash donations will be for the purchase of needed items. Please be sure to register your name, phone number and the number(s) of the tag(s) you have taken. The sign-up sheets are available next to the Angel Tree. This is an important step as we need to account for all the gift tags taken. Please return all gifts to our Parish Office or under the Angel Tree on or before Thursday, December 6. Last year we generously donated almost 200 gifts to children in our community.
