THE GOSPEL OF LUKE JESUS CHRIST THE SON OF MAN LUKE CHAPTER 23:44-56 TAPE NUMBER SM-708 FEBUARY 21, 2010 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: The Individuality Of His Salvation The Humanity and Divinity of Jesus Christ, The Son of God, Son of Man, Savoir of All Mankind SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Atonement, Salvation, Judgment, Cross Introduction to the Text; Luke 23:44-56 Luke 23:44-56 Now it was about the sixth hour, (12:00) and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. (03:00) :45 Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. :46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit. Having said this, He breathed His last. :47 So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous Man! :48 And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. :49 But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. :50 Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. :51 He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. :52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. :53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. :54 That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near. :55 And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. :56 Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment. 1

Now echoing in the ears of the thief upon his cross are the words of Jesus Christ to him, personally because Jesus isn t a corporate savoir, he s not a mass savoir, a group savoir Jesus Christ is a personal savior Verse 43 And Jesus said to him, Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise. The individuality of Jesus Mission The only time the word you really matters is when The Word of God (Jesus) is the one saying it John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Rom. 10:9 if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Rom. 10:10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. THE INDIVIDUALITY OF HIS SALVATION JESUS CHRIST YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR! 1.) For you - Jesus Christ paid the price v.44-45 FOR YOU, JESUS PAID THE PRICE 2

1a.) So you could talk to God Verse 44 Now it was about the sixth hour, (12:00) and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. (03:00) Why is Noteworthy? Technically: Jesus was crucified at 9:00am on the roman clock and for the space of 3 hours (till 12:00) those around Him heaped upon Him there cursing and blasphemy. But from the sixth hour (or 12:00 roman time) to the ninth hour (or 3:00 pm roman time) the Father in heaven was heaping or downloading upon Jesus Christ all of my sins 7 yours Jesus Christ Fulfills The Fellowship Offering For literally, thousands of years the Lord had been prophetically speaking that the fulfillment of what was promised would in fact come. the day of Israel s atonement had come The Old Testament Priesthood had an Expiration date on It. And that day had arrived. Jesus Christ was now fulfilling the old and instituting the new. Ex. 12:5-6 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats. :6 Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight. = between 3:00 and 5:00 pm Matt. 5:18 For assuredly, I say to you, (no thus saith the lord here) till heaven and earth pass away, one jot (the smallest letter) or one title (the least stroke of a pen) will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 3

1Tim. 2:5 For there is one God and one tor between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, FOR YOU, JESUS PAID THE PRICE 1b.) So you could have total access Verse 45 Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. The Transformation: In the darkness, for 3 hours - Jesus undergoes a transformation So beyond human comprehension, that once in eternity it will take us all of eternity to appreciate it 2Cor. 5:19 For God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself (creating access), not imputing (not laying it upon) their trespasses to them This is when he cries out psalm 22 Matt. 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Psa. 22:1,6,16 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?... :6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. :16 Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. 4

The Hebrew word for worm is towla and while it is literally translated to mean worm, it also means scarlet. There is in reality a towla worm and back in the day these worms were crushed up to produce a scarlet colored dye. What is most incredibly interesting about this worm is that in order for it to reproduce, it comes out of the earth, climbs a tree or post and affixes itself where it will soon die; It s young begin to feed on its flesh. When the experience is over, all that remains is a crimson stain on the wood. within one to three days that spot dries up turns white and falls away. Is. 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, Says the LORD, Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. FOR YOU, JESUS PAID THE PRICE 1c.) So you could see the way Verse 45 Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. The magnitude of this moment was wasted on no one! In the Wilderness Tabernacle & in the Temple in Jerusalem; 5

The veil in the temple separated the sinner from God. The only connection was allowed by God through a High Priest and that only once a year. the veil was to remind Israel God cannot be reached without a priest & blood. This physical veil was nearly 60 feet high, 10 feet wide and 4 inches thick. Matt. 27:50-51a And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. :51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split From the top down, not from the bottom, up. Don t miss this you re to know this vividly! It s the meaning of what Jesus said in john s gospel, John 14:6 Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father (the holy of holies) except through Me. Heb. 10:19-20 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, :20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, when Jesus died, the veil was torn, and God moved out of that place never again to dwell in a temple made with human hands God was through with that temple and its religious system, and the temple and Jerusalem were left desolate and later destroyed by the Romans in A.D. 70, just as Jesus prophesied So, what do we make of this? What significance does this torn veil have for us today? Above all, the tearing of the veil at the moment of Jesus' death dramatically symbolized that His sacrifice, the shedding of His own blood, was a sufficient atonement for sins. It signified that now the way into the Holy of Holies was open for all people, for all time, both Jew and Gentile. Icons, Temples & Statues Fail Us Heb. 9:1-9 6

Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and the earthly sanctuary. :2 For a tabernacle was prepared: the first part, in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the sanctuary; :3 and behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of All..:4 which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were the golden pot that had the manna, Aaron s rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant; :5 and above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. :6 Now when these things had been thus prepared, the priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle, performing the services. :7 But into the second part the high priest went alone once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the people s sins committed in ignorance; :8 the Holy Spirit indicating this, that the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing. :9 It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience Heb. 6:19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, :20 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever If the New Veil is His Flesh, and the Bible says We are Now Hidden in Christ Then the Believer is Now the Dwelling Place of God - 1Cor. 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? THE INDIVIDUALITY OF HIS SALVATION JESUS CHRIST YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR! 7

2.) For you - Jesus Christ went public v.46-47 :46 Now when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit. Having said this, He breathed His last. :47 So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous Man! THE INDIVIDUALITY OF HIS SALVATION JESUS CHRIST YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR! 2.) For you - Jesus Christ went public v.46-47 FOR YOU, JESUS WENT PUBLIC 2a.) He was public with His life Verse 46a Now when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit. this is most tender and significant. In Jesus day, at bedtime, a devoted Jew would pray, The close of his prayer would end in into Your hands I commit my spirit The tradition came from a psalm of David. Psa. 31:5 Into Your hand I commit my spirit; For You have redeemed me, O LORD God of truth. 8

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake I pray the Lord my soul to take. Jesus added Father to His version of that age-old prayer. Father had been Jesus Hallmark of His public ministry! FOR YOU, JESUS WENT PUBLIC 2b.) He was public in His death Verse 46b Having said this, He breathed His last. There is More Going On as Well; When we combine or overlay all the eyewitness accounts (Matthew, mark Luke, john) We see a very interesting pattern. For these first 3 hours Jesus uses the word Father when he speaks. But in the last 3 hours before His death, Jesus calls out using God why Because the at the front-end Jesus was interceding as our priests. at the backend Jesus was suffering as our sacrifice. John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said (shouted), tetelestai! It is finished! And bowing His head, He dismissed His spirit. Tetelestai was a military term that meant; The enemy is defeated / we are the victors / the war is over What was Finished? 9

The power of sin was finished: The power of the death was finished: The power of the grave was finished: The power of the past was finished: The power of fear was finished: The power of me was finished: Gal. 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. FOR YOU, JESUS WENT PUBLIC 2c.) He went public before all mankind Verse 47 So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, (or by saying) Certainly this was a righteous Man! In The End There s Only Jesus!!! John 12:31-32 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. :32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself. The Book of Revelation Is Jesus Revealed!!! 10

THE INDIVIDUALITY OF HIS SALVATION JESUS CHRIST YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR! 3.) For you - Jesus Christ kept His promise v.48-56 THE INDIVIDUALITY OF HIS SALVATION JESUS CHRIST YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR! 3.) For you - Jesus Christ kept His promise v.48-56 :48 And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. 11

FOR YOU, JESUS KEPT HIS PROMISE 3a.) He promised to show us how to get to heaven he opened up the door and made heaven available. Heb. 9:24 For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; FOR YOU, JESUS KEPT HIS PROMISE 3b.) He promised to teach us about who God was that we can trust him with the end, with death itself. In a word Jesus taught us how to die. Father, into your hands I commit my spirit is the last prayer that every child of God prays when its time to go. Luke 23:56 Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment. 12

FOR YOU, JESUS KEPT HIS PROMISE 3c.) He promised to do for us what we could never do 1Tim. 2:5 For there is one God and one tor between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 1.) The prayer // REMAIN SEATED 2.) USHER come forward 3.) the Call 4.) the REDICATION 5.) the WORSHIP End of Study 13
