OFFICE OF THE BISHOP M E M O To: Pastors From: Bishop Nickless Date: 15 May 2018 Re: Catholic Communications Campaign Special Collection Dear Brother Priests, As you know, the Catholic Communications Campaign special collection is scheduled for Holy Trinity Sunday and will be collected at all Masses for that solemnity on May 26-27. Below I attach the text of my letter in support of this collection. This letter will appear in the Globe s second May edition. Please take a moment to remind your parishioners of the upcoming collection, through either a bulletin announcement or a mention among the announcements at the end of Mass, or a similar way. Additional resources, including bulletin announcements, are available in English and Spanish at http://www.usccb.org/catholic-giving/opportunities-for-giving/catholiccommunication-campaign/collection/. May our Lord Jesus Christ bless and make fruitful your work in His ministry, with paschal joy and devotion. Your brother in Christ, Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless Bishop of Sioux City DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY 1821 JACKSON STREET SIOUX CITY, IOWA 51105 (712) 233-7555 FAX: (712) 233-7557
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, OFFICE OF THE BISHOP Recently, Pope Francis encouraged all of us to engage in constructive forms of communication that reject prejudice towards others and foster a culture of encounter (World Communications Day Message, 2017). Of course, this is the Church s mission, and therefore, part of the vocation of every baptized disciple. We each do this, for good or ill, by our behavior each day, and at our best, we present the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ by being kind, generous, supportive, and inviting to all those we meet. But we can also promote Christ s mission together, and one way to do that is through this Catholic Communications Campaign. This collection, held in our Diocese at all Masses for the solemnity of Holy Trinity Sunday, May 27, helps bring the Gospel message to the public square so that all can know the love of God. With your support of the CCC, a radio station in the Democratic Republic of Congo is being established to share the Gospel with those living in the North Kivu province, on the far eastern border of the country. This radio station will provide people with quality, faith-filled programming to encourage spiritual growth and evangelization. Programming will include recitation of the Rosary, praying the Liturgy of the Hours, Mass, catechetical programs, and Catholic news. Parishes, schools, diocesan offices, universities, and even family homes will be involved in the preparation and broadcasting, making the radio a virtual meeting place where many people will share their faith and life experiences. It is through your generosity that this project, and others like it, can spread the Gospel around the world. These efforts would not be possible without your support! Your contributions to the CCC collection continue the work of communicating the Gospel at home and around the world. In addition, 50% of all funds collected remain here in our own diocese to support our local communication and evangelization efforts, especially in Catholic radio and my own Meditations in a Minute podcasts. Please support this campaign with your prayers and devotion, and please prayerfully consider making a donation to this important collection. Your gift means that people in our diocese, our country, and our world will better know the love of God and the Church. Your brother in Christ, Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless Bishop of Sioux City DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY 1821 JACKSON STREET SIOUX CITY, IOWA 51105 (712) 233-7555 FAX: (712) 233-7557
OFFICE OF THE BISHOP M EMO TO: FROM: All Priests Bishop Nickless DATE: 16 May 2018 RE: Reassignment of Sister Esther Mary Nickel, RSM I recently received word from the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Michigan, that the decision has been made to reassign Sister Esther Mary to the Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan, effective July 1, 2018. Alma, Michigan is located within the Diocese of Saginaw, and Sister Esther Mary will be joining several other members of her order currently working in various positions there. To allow time for her move to Saginaw, her last day at the Chancery will be June 19 th. Though saddened by this news, I know the importance of community and the commitment to obedience that are the hallmark of the Religious Sisters of Mercy. Sister was on loan to us and I know she must go. We have been fortunate this past year to put her knowledge and expertise to work for us in so many areas diaconate formation, worship and liturgy, vocations, and most especially, in seeing us through our first year of transition with Ministry 2025. More than that, we have been blessed by her joyful spirit and laughter. Her presence at the Chancery and throughout the Diocese has made a difference on so many levels. It is an understatement to say that she will be missed. We extend our most sincere thanks to Sister Esther Mary for her service and dedication to the Diocese of Sioux City, and our best wishes to her in her new role in the Diocese of Saginaw. Above is the link on Catholicglobe.org for information on World Youth Day. It will be here before you know it! The Catholic Globe is collaborating with Canterbury Pilgrimages on this trip. Posters and brochures should be on display in our churches. Here is the direct link for reservations: www.canterburypilgrimages.com/siouxcity Those of you who have participated in agency tours may be aware that for every 10 pilgrims signed up, one complimentary tour is offered. You may see that as a perk to be involved in this. COST: The initial deposit of $450 is due with registration. The balance is due Nov. 7. A $3,000-plus price tag might be a lot for a young person, so fundraising may be needed. Also, consider asking the local Knights of Columbus or Catholic Daughters or other service group to assist with offsetting the cost. Grandparents might see value in this and could help. WHY GO: According to Father Patrick Behm of Fort Dodge, who attended World Youth Day in Poland in 2016, the best part of attending World Youth Day has been seeing the universality of the Catholic Church. It always amazes me that people from all over the world can be brought together by the common bond of being united in the Body of Christ. WHO CAN GO: Anyone, but to attend WYD activities, the recommended ages are 15-35. CHAPERONES: Father David Esquiliano is the chaplain for the trip but not a chaperone. Additionally, the tour company provides a guide, but not a chaperone. Anyone under the age of 18 will need a chaperone. We will have those in place once registrations start to come in. INFORMATION MEETING: I would be willing to host an informational meeting in the next two months at a convenient site to answer questions. Just let me know. Feel free to contact me with suggestions on promoting the pilgrimage. We are very excited to provide this opportunity. We ask your prayers as we go forth. Sincerely, Joanne Fox Managing Editor joannef@scdiocese.org (712) 233-7573
A message from Bishop Walker Nickless... I am pleased that Father David Esquiliano, a priest of the Diocese of Sioux City who is fluent in Spanish, will serve as the chaplain on this trip.
