The Lateran Basilica The Lateran Basilica, officially St. John Lateran, is the oldest of the four basilicas in Rome. The place where it stands was, in ancient times, the site of a mansion belonging to the Laterani family, thus the title Lateran. The Emperor Nero (ruled 54-68 A.D.) accused the then-owner of conspiracy, and seized the property. He made it into a calvary barracks and fort. Thus it was until the Emperor Constantine. Constantine (272-337 A.D.) acquired the property when he married his first Empress Fausta. He proceeded to give it to the Church. For a time the Lateran was the official residence of the pope, but in 324 A.D. Pope Sylvester made it Domus Dei, the House of God. Between the years 1309 and 1378, fires ravaged the buildings so a new residence for the pope was constructed near St. Peter s Basilica...the Vatican. In the 16th Century, Pope Sixtus V had the remains of the Lateran Palace torn down and a new cathedral erected. By 1735, the place had been renovated and a new façade was added.
