Persuasive Essay Formatting the introductory paragraph The following is an example of how to write an INTRODUCTION for an academic essay. Please note the sentence frames and example sentences. Each sentence in your introduction has a purpose and helps support your claim. Broad: Universal Idea about the Subject 1 st sentence: Open with a profound, captivating, universal statement about the subject you are evaluating (HOOK). 2nd sentence: Add to the universal idea. This should further highlight the point you are making 3rd sentence: Background information about your topic. 4th sentence: Thesis-includes a precise claim about the subject and presents the two reasons for your argument Specific: Thesis/Claim
