He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Luke 4:18 19 (NKJ) It is the vision of Mt. Olive to be a church that is intentional in its efforts to identify and meet the needs of broken, hurt and oppressed people in the greater Glen Allen area through the message and ministry of Jesus Christ. From the Pastor's Desk Praise God for bringing us through the summer season. As we move into the fall season it is a good time to seek God for renewal and revival. KINGDOMTIED August 28 November 26 (The pulpit attire is Green) 2 We are in the season of KINGDOMTIDE, the color of KINGDOMTIDE is GREEN. The color GREEN symbolizes growth. The cloths on the Communion table and podium are changed to coincide with each season of the Christian calendar. KINGDOMTIDE runs from August 24 until Advent. KINGDOMTIDE is the newest of the seasons, dating no farther back than the late 1930 s. KINGDOMTIDE gives place for due attention to the eternal presence of Christ and His Kingship with the parallel emphasis upon our stewardship. Its emphasis on the kingship of Christ and His kingdom, challenges us in our daily lives and in every area of our existence. General Theme For This Quarter: The study of this quarter is a survey of Old Testament wisdom literature, as well as an examination of Jesus teachings on wisdom. We hope that you will join us as we are focusing on: TEACHING AND LEARNING As is characteristic of wisdom literature, these books make little reference to covenant or religious life. Instead, they are focused on human wisdom and transmit lessons learned from experience and tradition. They are the words of a teacher to a student, or a parent to a child, words of wisdom passed on from one generation to another. The first five lessons draw on the wisdom collected by the writers of Proverbs. The next two lessons consider the wisdom of Ecclesiastes. The final lesson comes from the Song of Solomon. THIS WEEK S TRADITION AND WISDOM TEACHING VALUES Proverbs 15:21 33 UNIT #1 The author offers advice that contains wise and godly principles for living, which helps strengthen one s trust in God. Heeding and practicing the advice offered in Proverbs lead to positive outcomes. NEXT WEEK S: September 25, 2011 WISDOM AND DISCERNMENT Proverbs 25:1 10 In this lesson, the proverbs of Solomon were collected by Kind Hezekiah. While they originally meant to help those who dealt with a king, these verses have positive applications for a wide variety of relationships. They offer wisdom on values such as humility, honesty, discretion, and respect. SEPTEMBER*OCTOBER NOVEMBER 2011 CLASSES FOR EVERYONE!! MOBC HOW TO ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST INTO YOUR HEART September is Christian Education Month 5 Perhaps while reading the announcements you realized you have never made a Christian commitment. Don t delay that decision! We encourage you to embrace God s love today and receive the salvation that only Jesus Christ gives. Here are five simple steps you can take to find assurance of salvation. 1. Recognize your need. The Bible tell us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Rom. 3:23) All of us are sinners, and we must admit our need for a Savior. 2. Repent of your sins. Our sins create a wall that separates us from God. By confessing our sins and turning from them, you will find forgiveness. The Bible promises: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). 3. Believe in Jesus. God sent His only Son to die so that He could pay for all our sins. Put your faith in Him and believe in His power to save you. The Bible says, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16). 4. Receive His salvation. God has given us a great gift in His Son, but we must receive His gift. Thank Him for loving and forgiving you, and ask Him to live in your heart. His promise to us is clear: But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12). 5. Confess your faith. The Bible assures us: If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom. 10:9). You have been born again and are now part of God s family. Tell someone else what Jesus has done in your life! In celebrating Christian Education Month, Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Church School would like to welcome you back to Church School. Church School is a place of enlightenment where the people of God teach and learn the Word so that they may grow and be rooted in their faith. Unlike the corporate worship experience, it is an environment where questions can be asked and concepts can be immediately explained. Therefore, we encourage you to participate in Church School. It will promote kingdom knowledge and glorification. The fun, joy, and blessings of gaining and sharing acquired knowledge will be the fruit of your efforts. Welcome back to Church School! ATTENTION MOUNT OLIVE, WE HAVE GROWN! TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS EXPECTED (LUKE 12:48) The Lord has blessed us with an abundance of youth in need of care and nurturing during worship and Bible Study. THE YOUTH MINISTRY IS IN NEED OF THE FOLLOWING: SUNDAY 11AM NURSERY ATTENDANTS: We will train you to attend to the children age1 5 during the worship service once per month. You will not be alone. Youth Bible Study meets most Wednesdays at 7 8pm. You can select which Wednesday per month you would like to teach. Please see Rev. Kelly or Carolyn Debnam if you can assist. You did not choose me but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit; fruit that will last. John 15:16 Church School Teachers Needed! Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs. 22:6 Can you commit to one hour on Sunday Mornings? If you can, Church School is in need of three teachers to teach our Primary and Junior students. First timers, as well as seasoned teachers will appreciate the user friendly teacher guide that makes teaching fun and easy. I n t e r c e s s o r y P r a y e r C o r n e r Month of September Meekness Humbleness Father I thank you that meekness is not a sign of insignificance or inferiority, but it s love s humility. I humble myself and submit to your Word that speaks, exposes, sifts, and analyzes the very thoughts and purpose of my heart. As an act of faith, I adorn myself with humility and receive your grace. I humble myself under your mighty hand Lord, because I know you will exalt me in due time. Help me not to think more highly of myself than I ought because with pride comes shames. I renounce pride and arrogance, because you hate a proud look, but You give grace to the humble, therefore; I clothe myself with humility. Lord revive the spirit of meekness within me that I may inherit the earth. Let my humility and reverence to you bring wealth and honor and life. In Jesus Name. ADOPTION WORKS BUT WHEN THE TIME HAD FULLY COME, God sent His Son, born of women, born under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And, because you are sons, God has sent the spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying Abba! Father! Galatians 4:4 6(RSV) Meet Ahmond Age 11 Ahmond is a delightful young man. He really enjoys any type of sporting activity including basketball, football, baseball and riding his bike. He also enjoys his karate classes and very much looks forward to attending twice per week. Ahmond is extremely neat and loves to have his things in his bedroom to be in the exact order in which he left them. This young man is a dresser. He likes to be in his Sunday best and have every thing matching. Ahmond has a great sense of humor and this can often be used to redirect him. He has a few fears; he is very much afraid of pets, water especially swimming and strangers. It takes a great deal of time to get to know this young man but he will warm your heart forever. Many, many families just like yours have opened their hearts and their homes to children who need to be Adopted. If you are interested in Ahmond or other waiting children who have been featured monthly in the Announcements, please call Va One Church One Child at (804) 329 3420 or Deaconess Dorothy Robinson at (804) 266 3118.
