The Philippian brethren had been supporters of Paul s work since he first left from Macedonia. Regarding their support in verse 17 Paul says, Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. Not every person can go and do mission work. Those that can go need others to help them in many ways. Paul s comments in the selected passage are clearly discussing financial support, but the worker s needs include much more than finances. Each person that prays for the work, encourages the workers, goes on short term campaigns and supports the work financially is a part of the work. Each individual and congregation that is a part of the work shares in the fruit that is produced by the work. There is an Old Testament precedent to this rule. In 1 st Samuel 30 we read of a time when David went with 400 men to battle with the Amalekites. In verse 10 we see there were 200 men that could not go with him to battle. In verse 21 some of David s men did not want to share the spoils with those who stayed behind. David understood that without those who stay behind and take care of the supplies those who go to battle would be nothing. Therefore, a law was made that stated from that point forward all would share in the spoils of war. Notice that in verse 24 regarding those who stay by the supplies David says, They shall share alike. Those who were on the front lines did not receive a greater share than the supporters as we might think. Instead each one received an equal share. Far from the United States, across many miles of ocean there are two small islands called Pohnpei and Kosrae. These two islands have a total population of around 50,000 souls. These souls need to hear the gospel. Because of the work that the Fayetteville congregation is doing those souls are not only hearing the gospel, but responding to it. When a Bible study is conducted, a tract passed out, a sermon preached or a soul is baptized into Christ you are doing it. Just like David s soldiers who were by the supply lines you are an important part of the battle and have an equal share in the fruit that is produced. For this reason we want you not to think of yourselves as supporters of the work in Micronesia, but investors. Over the years your investment has resulted in countless Bible studies, 5 years of weekly radio programs, three congregations planted in Pohnpei and, most importantly, 89 souls baptized into Christ. This is fruit that has abounded to your account and we hope and pray you will continue to invest in the work in Micronesia and the results will be even more fruit to your account.
