First Congregational United Church of Christ November From the desk of Pastor Scott. ALL CHURCH SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING We will hold a special meeting of the Church on Sunday November 18th immediately following church in fellowship hall. I see this meeting as important and exciting for our future together! The purpose of the meeting will be twofold: The first part of the meeting will focus on sharing the final product of our Church Vision process. We will share the new church vision statement and the mission attributes that we will strive for in the future. These statements will be the core of the values we have in our calling to be a church today and into the future. As we move forward they will help us as reference points in strategic planning and as a way to measure how our programs and ministries, our staff work, missions and worship fit into the church we are striving to be. The goal of this is that all missions and programs are collectively working to be the church we believe we are called to be. With this will come a) better communication b) a more unified message and c) provide clarity to who we are as a church both for our members, and just as importantly for those who are hearing of our church for the first time. 2018-2019 Stewardship Drive Beyond the Building In the past four years, we have dealt with a lot trying to address long standing building issues, safety updates, leaking sanctuary roofs, and the property s susceptibility to flooding by doing a lot of mitigation work when we repaved the driveway. In short, we have tried to be better stewards of our ministry base of operations. The bigger stewardship mission is being stewards of the good news of Jesus. How do we live out our mission and faith values beyond these walls? How do we speak to the value of every human being? How are they treated both within the Church, our culture and our nation? How do we wrestle with living in such ways as we respect what God has created? How do we live in better harmony with one another and the rest of creation? How do we help people who have been disillusioned or wounded by the Church get reconnected to God? How do we present a more loving, grace filled, beautiful gospel than the narrow and limited Jesus message that is sometimes loudly and coercively pushed into our world? How are we living as God s people with what God has given us beyond our building- where church is more than a place (1047 Curtiss Street) but, a series of God-given values that daily we fight for, strive for and try to live out? This year as we highlight how we are stewards of the generous gifts God has given us, we d like to challenge each individual and family to consider ways that stretch us into sharing those values. To be a Church that is visible and active both in our community and the world, we must share these values through our time, volunteerism, service, our voices, the empowerment of others to speak out and our dollars and cents. Our purpose is to help people connect to God and one another to live, learn and love like Jesus. Continued.. The second part of the meeting will speak to a newly worked restructuring of our church governance and ministry teams. Why would we wish to do this? Did we not spend some time combining ministries in recent years? The answer is yes we did combine some like ministries and missions. But here is why this is being revisited today: Prior to 2015 we had 17 ministries : Missions, Justice, Worship and Arts, Personnel, Cabinet, Building and Grounds, Fellowship, Congregational Care, Finance and Budget, Endowment, FCLC, Stewardship, Leadership, Evangelism, Christian Education, Pastoral Relations, and Audit. We had voted that each ministry should/could be comprised of 6 to 8 members. At that ideal number to have full functioning ministries at minimum (6) we d have a need of 112 volunteers and at maximum (8) we d have a need for 136 volunteers. During the course of recruiting new leaders to fill these positions we are getting (or trying to get) 1/3 of those numbers or a minimum of 37 volunteers per year. If you have looked at our slate the past 3-4 years, or spoken with anyone on stewardship and leadership, we have had a very difficult time getting our ministries fully filled. But the more critical link that needs addressing in my mind s eye, is that we tend to go about filling our ministries with those who are readily available, not by describing what is needed and finding people who really have the passion or skill, or calling to engage their faith in an area of the church where they really feel led to serve and contribute. This proposal will address both of these needs. It seeks to start from a place of prayer, training, and connecting peoples gifts and talents to our church vision and the needs and goals of the ministry. We served about 30-70 servings on five Mondays. There were many compliments on the food from the guests. My heartful thanks and a big hug to those who volunteered to work, particularly those who signed up multiple times! Thanks to the very helpful confirmands, who came in the evening to help set up and make lunches. Also, a big thanks to the Downers Grove North High School students who came early in the morning to clean up and the Girl Scout Troop 51928 from Herrick Middle School who organized our kids activities. Special thanks to Lisa Lockett, who got her coworkers from Advocate Nurses to provide all the food and dinner shift volunteers for Monday, Oct. 22. The regular staff of PADS and the coordinators Tom Williams and Dave Hersemann were always willing to help. Thank you for making this a great outreach! ~ Char & Bob Wild PADS Fundraiser: Thanks to everyone who supported the fundraisers at City BBQ in September and October. We may be doing another in December. Christmas Eve falls on a Monday this year meaning our PADS guests will awake on Christmas morning sleeping on the floor in a church basement. We will again collect gift ideas from each regular guest in hopes to provide them gift cards for the adults and presents for the children. Each card/gift will be about $50. Please contact Tom Williams if you are able to participate. If you purchase gift cards directly through Manna and wish to get credit for your donation on your contribution statement, you will need to let Tom know to inform the bookkeeper. Santa and Mrs Claus will be visiting our PADS kids on the evening of Monday December 17. They may resemble former Ministers at our church. Additional details to follow.

Thank you FCCDG and friends! We put out the call for help and you came through - we ended up with over 100 volunteers and took in over $8300, breaking two records! The garage sale was a huge success in so many ways, providing outreach, fellowship, help to those in need, funding and environmental stewardship. Many thanks to those who donated items, shopped, and worked the sale. We have attempted to list all the volunteers below, and apologize if we left anyone out. We truly appreciate all of you who lent a hand-we could not have done this without you! Updates & Events Children s Christmas Pageant: Calling all young actors! During Advent we will be hosting a Children s Christmas Pageant at the beginning of service on December 23rd. Rehearsals will be right after Sunday School until 11:15am. All of our little friends that do not want a speaking part (angels and animals) will only rehearse the morning of the pageant. Join Worship and Arts following worship on November 25 th as we decorate the sanctuary and Parlor for Advent. A longtime tradition of our church, we will be assembling and decorating the Crismon Tree, the standing Advent wreath, garlands, etc. as we prepare for another joyous Christmas season. We can use many people of all ages but will need some strong people to help with storage boxes and larger items. Grab a cup of coffee at coffee hour and meet in the sanctuary! Building and Grounds: Our church building is very busy seven days every week. Carl Lorek works Monday-Friday. Earlier this year, we contracted Jan Pro to clean certain areas of the church on Saturday evenings along with the FCLC areas. Sometimes that is still not enough coverage. Please cleanup after your meetings. Please leave the room in a better condition than you found it. It is a shared responsibility by everyone using our building to keep it clean 24/7. Thanks to generous members, near and far, who provided funding for the new HD projector in the rear of the Sanctuary. Now that all projectors are HD, the quality of our online transmission is improved. We also upgraded the PC in Len Potter s studio in room 501. Len was dealing with repeated outages on Sunday mornings. New LED light fixtures were recently installed in rooms 603-605 and the Youth Room thanks in part to rebates from Comed. Each fixture is equipped with a sensor to help conserve electricity. We have significantly reduced our consumption of kwh by investing in new AC rooftop units and converting most of our lights to LED. However, our Comed electric bills are similar in amount to 2016. Please turn out lights when you leave a room or the building at the end of the day. Meal Express: We are looking for volunteers who will prepare (or purchase a prepared meal) and deliver meals to members of our church who would appreciate this gesture. This service could be for sickness, new baby, hospitalization, etc. Please sign up after church in Fellowship Hall. We will celebrate with gratitude all that God has done and is doing in our lives here in Downers Grove. The service will also include the Men s Spirito Choir. Following the service we will give thanks for our blessings over pie and ice cream in Fellowship Hall. Please consider bringing a dessert to share. Service begins at 7:30pm on TUESDAY, November 20 th. The Sunday morning service is now being re-broadcast on Cable Channel 19 at 4:30pm every Sunday to 35 Greater Chicago area networks! 2019 Dance Lessons For those who d like to hit the dance floor in style at the Christian Fellowship dinner gala or some other event, but need to dust off their dancin shoes a bit, we will be offering six weeks of group dance lessons on Friday evenings in the Fellowship Hall starting January 11 th. For more details contact Lynn Niemi. 2019 Fellowship Dinner Gala Christian Fellowship is hosting a dinner gala on Saturday, February 23 rd. The event will be held at Carriage Greens Country Club in Darien. Dinner will be family style, and a cash bar will be available. The cost will be $50 per person. Watch for details as to time and where to buy tickets in the December and January Pilgrims and bulletins. Friends from outside the church are also welcome to attend.

CARING FOR CREATION-Leaf Mulch: Nature s Natural Fertilizer Fall is here and that means watching football, eating crisp apples, admiring changing leaf colors and...raking and bagging those leaves. But hold on! You can reduce your time spent raking, save money and give nature a helping hand when you bag the leaf bags. Simply attach your catcher bag to the lawnmower and mow right over all the leaves. When the bag fills, remove it and spread the mulched leaves under your trees and over your planting beds up to two inches thick. Do not cover existing plants. Remember no volcano mulch any type of mulch should be pulled several inches away from the base of the tree, shrub, or perennial. Don t have a catcher bag on your mower? No problem - rake those leaves into a low pile and run your mower back and forth over the leaves. Or run them through a chipper/shredder. Breaking the leaves into smaller pieces helps them break down faster when you spread them around your plants, or add them to your compost pile. Putting leaf mulch around trees and shrubs has multiple benefits. Over the course of the winter and spring, the leaves will break down to improve your soil. God in her infinite wisdom as Master Gardener has created soil organisms such as bacteria, fungi, insects, and earthworms, which digest the leaves and mix them into the soil, adding nutrients for your plants to use. Cut back perennials, especially tall ones that are drooping to about eight inches above the ground. Leave others, such as native grasses and coneflowers, for example, to provide visual interest and food for birds during the winter.
