Our Capital Campaign Our Capital Campaign as discussed at ur meeting last mnth will begin in January 2015. Catechesis: Scial Outreach Ruth Marchetti, Jim Hpper The fcus f this Scial Outreach Catechesis is the invlvement f St Jseph s with the Rchester ACTS (Alliance f Cmmunities Transfrming Sciety) prgram. PRESENTATION NOTES [with thanks t Cathy Kamp fr her cllectin f ntes] Rchester is the 5 th prest city in the US per capita verview f ACTS & ur parish cmmitment t it: ACTS is Alliance f Cmmunities Transfrming Sciety made up f 13 rganizatin including 5 Cathlic Churches, 4 African American Churches; a unin and additinal churches The grup is trying t address issues in the City f Rchester we nly live 10 miles away frm the city hw can we make a difference? Nv 15 is a Rc/ACTS kickff dinner and issues assembly ACTS will chse 3 issues t address. What are ur issues frm a St Jseph s perspective? verview f the listening campaign we are being asked t start in ur wn parish cmmunity. A listening campaign is a 1-n-1 prcess that is fcused n learning frm a persn; it s nt an exchange r an in-depth discussin. The gal fr the 1-n-1 listening campaign is t learn what mtivates the persn; what drives them. what des ACTS have t d with being Cathlic r the cmmunity f St Jseph s? Basic principles f Cathlic Scial Teaching shw hw we shuld be engaged with ther cmmunities in supprting the life and dignity f every persn. Gathering, building & strengthening needs t result in taking ur faith t the brader cmmunity and every persn created in the image f Gd. We are called t be engaged with the cmmunity, have rights & respnsibilities. Gd lves us but like a parent the attentin is n the prest and mst vulnerable. a sample 1-n-1 listening sessin dn t fill ut the frm during the 1-n-1; summarize the talk afterwards establish a rapprt by asking abut the persn s family and backgrund up frnt take hints frm what seems t excite the persn and cax frm there fr mre infrmatin use this prcess t find interests and areas that are imprtant/interesting t the individual. explratin f using a listening campaign as an apprach t reach ut t ur cmmunity Listening is an imprtant first step in hspitality t knw mre abut each ther. Scial Outreach just scratching the surface; we need t encurage peple t step utside their cmfrt zne t engage in hands n ministry. What are the peple f St Jseph s cncerned abut in ur cmmunity and in the greater cmmunity? PPC Minutes frm 09/08/14, Page 2

QUESTION FOR PERSONAL REFLECTION The questin this week is basically an pen-ended request fr cmments n this subject sme discussin ntes: [with thanks t Cathy Kamp fr her cllectin f ntes] Peple like t be heard Great prcess t identify gals fr parish & larger cmmunity Need t include brad range f peple Need a prcess t identify a crss sectin f the parish, nt all necessarily invlved, wide demgraphics. What is the desired end result? Hw d yu determine actin? (Nte that Assumptin parish is envisining 1,100 ne-n-ne s as a gal fr 12 mnths) fr St Jseph s, we re being asked by Rc/ACTS t identify 3 issues by Octber 29 f this year. Nt a lt f time. Why nt d a statistically significant study acrss the cmmunity? (ACTS will eventually pursue actin steps n 3 issues; the rt f this apprach is building relatinship) A result f such a prcess at St Jseph s culd be t build relatinships thrugh listening t a large crss sectin f the parish membership Hw wuld we advertise t attract the peple we d like t target? Is this a parish initiative r an ACTS initiative? Is this a hspitality initiative? Need t shw mre than the negative abut the city; need t nt alienate peple just because they live in the suburbs A cncern was expressed if issues arise in the Rc/ACTS grup that may be f crss-purpses with the Rman Cathlic Church but this was addressed by stating that Rc/ACTS members cannt advcate fr anything that is plicy r belief. Team Fcus: Scial Outreach Katie Denecke PRESENTATION NOTES the trifecta f pprtunity: Rc/ACTS is nw up and running Ruth Marchetti is nw available t fcus n advcacy & educatin fr team Hspitality is smething fr us t fcus n with 1-n-1 s. a handut f Tw Feet f Lve in Actin was distributed shwing the dual tenets f Scial Justice and Charitable Wrks. QUESTION FOR DISCUSSION Wuld a listening campaign wrk as part f ur Hspitality Missin? sme discussin ntes: [with thanks t Cathy Kamp fr her cllectin f ntes] We need t wrk t vercme the 8th grade ice breaker feeling f it. What s the cnnectin between us discussing SJC issues & discussing what we think are the city s issues & actually making a difference in the city f ROC. What precisely will ACTS plan t d? Listening t peple frm ther parishes seems like it wuld have mre persnal benefit, Cncern is getting everyne at church t supprt it (ie redistributin f wealth). Talking circles until we identify issues. Mre abut cnversin f heart hw des smene else change me? Wuldn t it be wild if we shared the same values? PPC Minutes frm 09/08/14, Page 3

Themes: seeking t build relatinships; seeking t listen better; seeking t knw Jesus better thrugh each ther t be cmmunity. We are part f a larger grup use as pprtunity t teach abut Cathlic Scial Teaching. We have a respnsibility t share what we have, respnsibility t teach. Fcus: 1-in-1s as part f hspitality; pprtunity t teach abut Cathlic Scial Teaching but nt necessarily t prmte ACTS (message t cmplex & undefined) Can we start here with PPC members? Hw des discreet 1-n-1 fit the brader bjective f hspitality nt sure f the cnnectin with hspitality Leadership Team s Check In Statements Mary Ann Lvelck The fllwing entries are taken frm ntes gathered during this meeting and/r frm material supplied directly frm the team spkespeple.
