Palm Sunday 9 a.m. O Lord, I ask for faith enough to accept the love which has been revealed to us through Him. Keep me from wriggling away from the Cross of Jesus. Keep me from hiding behind it with flowers and fine words. For if it is to mean anything real, it must stand in the deep places of my heart. It must mean that I too will enter into the pain of life. CHORAL ANTHEM Sanctus from St. Cecilia Mass Gounod Chancel Choir; James Baker, Antoinette Torres Tucker, soloists SCRIPTURE READING Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus Mark 14:43-51 HYMN Nearer, My God, to Thee (verse 1) No. 528 Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to Thee! SCRIPTURE READING Jesus Before the Council Mark 14:53-65 Peter Denies Jesus Mark 14:66-72 HYMN Nearer, My God, to Thee (verse 2) No. 528 Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down, darkness be over me, my rest a stone; yet in my dreams I d be nearer, my God to Thee; nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! PRELUDE * PROCESSIONAL Hosanna, In Excelsis Andrew Lloyd Webber Chancel Choir; Oliver Henderson, tenor * OPENING PRAYER Pastor: O God, early in the morning, when the world was young, You made life in all its beauty and terror; You gave birth to all that we know. All: Hallowed be Your name! SCRIPTURE READING John 19:28-34 HYMN Nearer, My God to Thee (verse 3) No. 528 There let the way appear, steps unto heaven; all that Thou sendest me, in mercy given; angels to beckon me nearer, my God to Thee; nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! THE MESSAGE CROSSWORDS Rev. Cindy Skutar It is Finished
Liturgist: Early in the morning, when the world least expected it, a new born child crying in a cradle announced that You had come among us, that You were one of us. All: Hallowed be Your Name! Pastor: Early in the morning, surrounded by self-interested religious leaders, anxious statesmen and silent friends, You accepted the penalty for doing good, for being God: You shouldered and suffered the cross. All: Hallowed be Your Name! Liturgist: Early in the morning, a voice in a guarded graveyard and footsteps in the dew proved that You had risen, that You had come back to those and for those who had forgotten, denied and destroyed You. All: O God, bring new life where we are worn and tired, new love where we have turned hard-hearted, forgiveness where we have wounded, and the joy and freedom of Your Holy Spirit where we are prisoner to ourselves. Pastor: All: Amen! To all and to each, where regret is real, God pronounces pardon and grants us the right to begin again. Thanks be to God!
