Love divine, all loves excelling 2

ALL SAINTS EPISCOPAL CHURCH November 13, 2016 10:30 AM Twenty-sixth Sunday After Pentecost Proper 28 The Holy Eucharist Rite II The Rev. Leslie J. Hague is the celebrant today. VOLUNTARY Elegy C. Hubert Parry (1848-1918) PROCESSIONAL HYMN Love divine, all loves excelling (music on previous page) THE WORD OF GOD OPENING ACCLAMATION (please stand) Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and forever. Amen. There is one body and one spirit. There is one hope in God s call to us. One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism. One God and Father of all. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. COLLECT OF THE DAY Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. A READING FROM MALACHI 4:1-2a See, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble; the day that comes shall burn them up, says the LORD of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who revere my name the sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings. Reader The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. 3

PSALM 98 A READING FROM 2 THESSALONIANS 3:6-13 Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, and we did not eat anyone's bread without paying for it; but with toil and labor we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of 4

you. This was not because we do not have that right, but in order to give you an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SEQUENCE HYMN 632 O Christ, the Word Incarnate Munich THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke 21:2-19. Glory to you, Lord Christ. When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, Jesus said, "As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down." They asked him, "Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?" And he said, "Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, `I am he!' and, `The time is near!' Do not go after them. "When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately." Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven. "But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls." Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. THE SERMON The Rev. Leslie J. Hague 5

Amen. THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those here are cleansed from sin and born again and may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Then the Priest places a hand on the person s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross and saying Madelynne, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. loudly Amen. 8

Let us welcome the newly baptized. and We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. HOLY COMMUNION THE HOLY EUCHARIST, PRAYER A OFFERTORY ANTHEM Requiem from Paradise Hotel Eliza Gilkyson (b. 1950) Written as a song of grief following the December 2004 Asian tsunami. This song found a renewed audience after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Mother Mary, full of grace, awake all our homes are gone, our loved ones taken, taken by the sea. Mother Mary, calm our fears, have mercy. Drowning in a sea of tears, have mercy. Hear our mournful plea. Our world has been shaken we wander our homelands forsaken In the dark night of the soul, bring some comfort to us all, oh Mother Mary come and carry us in your embrace that our sorrows may be faced. Mary, fill the glass to overflowing. Illuminate the path where we are going. Have mercy on us all. In funeral fires burning, each flame to your mystery returning. In the dark night of the soul, your shattered dreamers, make them whole, oh Mother Mary find us where we've fallen out of grace, lead us to a higher place. In the dark night of the soul, our broken hearts you can make whole Oh Mother Mary come and carry us in your embrace let us see your gentle face, Mary OFFERTORY HYMN 296 We know that Christ is raised and dies no more Engelberg The people remain standing. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Sursum corda S-120 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. The proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in Jesus Christ our Lord you have received us as your sons and daughters, made us citizens of your kingdom, and given us the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. Therefore we praise you, joining our 9

voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: and Sanctus S-128 Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The people stand or kneel as they choose. Then the continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: and Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. 10

THE LORD S PRAYER And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, and Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD FRACTION ANTHEM and S-155 Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. The says the following Invitation The Gifts of God for the of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. COMMUNION DUET I Heard a Voice from Heaven John Goss (1800-1880) I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, From henceforth, blessed are the dead which die in the Lord: Even so, saith the Spirit: for they rest from their labours; and their works do follow them. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BEDS AROUND THE ALTAR November 28 December 2, 2016 Our All Saints community will be hosting several families from the community the week of November 28. These families have found themselves at a difficult time in their lives, particularly being without a permanent place to live. All Saints is part of a network of inter-faith churches in our county, that provide a weeklong stay or until space becomes available for a family in a shelter area or other temporary housing. During the week, volunteers play an essential role in helping the families cope during their stay. Individuals or families prepare a meal and visit with the families. Each evening two chaperones spend the night providing a safe place to sleep. With All Saints helping hands, these families are supported through this crucial time in a loving community of faith. Many of our volunteers have expressed what an awesome and rewarding feeling they have after spending time with these families who are in true need of our fellowship. We are coordinating volunteers to bring evening meals to feed the families at 5:15 pm and chaperones to be on-site overnight with the families from 7 pm until 7 am in the church sanctuary. For more info or to volunteer, contact Jeff Miller 954-770-4200, jeff_miller714@yahoo.com THANKSGIVING FOR HOPE HOUSE FAITH IN ACTION This year, we have received a request to help Hope House-Faith in Action with some items that are needed for those families who receive their assistance.
