Peace Lutheran Church Fourth Sunday of Easter April 17, 2016 AS WE GATHER Welcome to Peace Lutheran Church a special welcome to our guests! Please take some time during worship to fill out the attendance/prayer card, located at the end of each pew. If you are a guest, we would love to receive contact information so we can respond to your visit with us today. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. PREPARATION GATHERING MUSIC Everlasting God Brenton Brown & Ken Riley Blessed Be Your Name Matt Redman, Beth Redman SHARING of PEACE SONG of PRAISE You Never Let Go Matt Redman, Beth Redman (As we sing the song of praise, please pass your attendance / prayer card to the ushers. If you are a first-time guest, please provide your contact information so that we can respond to your visit this week.) BAPTISM of ELI REID MYERS Gather at the Altar P: Listen to the words of Christ our Lord in the last chapter of Matthew, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. In the last chapter of Mark our Lord promises, Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved. And the apostle Peter has written, Baptism now saves you. The Word of God also teaches that we are all conceived and born sinful and are under the power of the devil until Christ claims us as His own. 1

P: How are you named? R: Eli Reid Myers P: Eli Reid Myers, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your + forehead and upon your + heart to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified. P: Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, according to Your strict judgment You condemned the unbelieving world through the flood, yet according to Your great mercy You saved believing Noah and his family. You drowned hard-hearted Pharaoh and his entire army in the Rea Sea, and led yet Your people Israel through the water on dry ground, foreshadowing this washing of Your Holy Baptism. Through the Baptism in the Jordan River of Your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, You sanctified and instituted all waters to be a blessed flood and a lavish washing away of sin. We pray that You would watch over Eli according to Your endless mercy and bless him with true faith by the Holy Spirit, that through this saving flood all sin in him, which has been inherited from Adam and which he himself has committed since, would be drowned and die. Grant that he be kept safe and secure in the holy ark of the Christian Church, being separated from the multitude of unbelievers and serving Your name at all times with an eager spirit and a joyful hope, so that, with all believers in Your promise, he would be declared worthy of eternal life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: AMEN. P: Hear the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth; anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them. P: It is your task as sponsors to confess with the whole Church the faith in our God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, in whose name this child is to be baptized. After he has been baptized you are at all times to remember him in your prayers, remind him of his Baptism, and, as much as you can, give your counsel and aid, especially if he should lose his parents, that he is brought up in the true knowledge and worship of God and be taught the Ten Commandments, the Creed, and the Lord s Prayer; and that, as he grows in years, you place in his hands the Holy Scriptures, bring him to the services of God s house, and provide him further instruction in the Christian faith, that he comes to the Sacrament of Christ s Body and Blood and thus, abiding in his baptismal grace and in communion with the Church, he may grow up to lead a godly life to the praise and honor of Jesus Christ. P: This, then, you intend gladly and willingly to do? R: Yes. 2

P: God enable you the will to do this faithful and loving work and with his grace fulfill what we are unable to do. P: In order to implore the blessing of our Lord Jesus Christ upon the gathering of this child into the family of our Father, let us with all the family pray the prayer he gave us. C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Move to the font P: The Lord preserve your coming in and your going out from this time forth and even + forevermore. C: Amen. P: Eli do you renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways? R: Yes, I renounce him. P: Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth? R: Yes, I believe. P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty: from thence He will come to judge the living and the dead? R: Yes, I believe. P: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting? R: Yes, I believe. P: Eli Reid Myers, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: The Almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with His grace to life + everlasting. C: Amen. Rep: Receive this white garment to show that you have been clothed with the robe of Christ s righteousness that covers all your sin. 3

Rep: Receive this burning light. Live always by the light of Christ, and be ever watchful for his coming, that you may meet Him with joy and enter with Him into the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which shall have no end. Rep: Through Baptism God has added Eli to his own people to declare the wonderful deeds of our Savior, who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. C: We welcome you into the Lord s family. We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, a child of the same heavenly Father, to work with us in His kingdom. Amen.
