What A Christian Mother Can Do For Her Household Today Pastor D Green 02.04.2018 SGBC Mansfield OH 04.29.2018 Grace Missionary Baptist Temperance MI I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. (2 Timothy 1:3 5) My subject as it has been assigned for the Bible Conference has been What A Christian Mother Can Do For Her Household Today. I submit to you today that while there are many things a mother can do for her household today, there is a great need in homes today and that need is spiritual in nature. All of the other duties, while very important, pale in comparison and this lays the groundwork for a Christian home. Notice from our text, Timothy s father was a Greek a man. (Acts 16:1). The faith Timothy learned was not from him, it was from his mother and grandmother. As Paul wrote to the young preacher, he is reminded of the unfeigned faith, the true faith, the pure faith, the faith without hypocrisy that was first in Timothy s grandmother and also in his mother. Paul knew Timothy s family - he had seen evidence of who these women were and recognized them of being of like faith which they obviously taught Timothy. He was persuaded that this true faith was in him also. This he wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. I believe the first thing, then that a Christian mother can do, is live a consistent Christian life before her family and before everyone else. The devil is after our homes today, and especially the children need people they can look up to. Why is it that we turn on the televisions and goo and gah after celebrities when you could be a model for your daughter? A model for what your son looks for in a spouse? Our homes need good examples of what it means to be a Christian adult in this world. Observe from our text, that Timothy had a good and godly grandmother as well as a good and godly mother. They believed and Timothy imitated that faith and holiness he saw and learned of them. And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 3:15)

Every mother is a homeschool mother, some to more of an extent than others but you are all teaching your households something. You are all teaching your children, your nieces and nephews something. What is it? Who taught Timothy the Scriptures? It was his mother and his grandmother. His dad wasn t going to do it. And guess what, little did they know but God was using that to raise up a preacher in their midst. And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:15) The gospel needs to be preached to every creature, beginning at home. Beloved, If we really are still missionary Baptists, and if we still care about missionaries abroad and evangelizing our neighborhood, we better teach the gospel to our own sons and daughters! And the spreading of the gospel is not just for the preacher. It isn t just a man thing. Go back to the text, notice the wording there. Before the faith dwelt in Timothy it was in his mother and grandmother. Salvation is not passed on through DNA. Divine grace does not run in the blood. Yet, we see here there is a true sense that moral and spiritual tendencies and characteristics are transmitted. Birth in a Godly home are potent factors in the character of a man. By all means, don t just send your children to church, bring them to church! But at the same time, don t rely on the two or three services a week to be enough to fill their spiritual needs. Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (Deuteronomy 6:4 7) Here me now, search the Bible from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21 and you will find that only two agencies are commanded by God to teach children: parents, and in a supplementary role, grandparents. That s it! I know, we live in a world that is all about the physical and outward appearances. But let s think about this for a minute. From an eternal perspective, the best name brand clothes will not matter. Having your kids in sports isn t going to be a topic of conversation when we get into heaven. Folks, even academics are unimportant, unless they prepare us to do God s will. God is not going to meet us at the Judgment Seat and say You did a fantastic job raising your kids, but you should have spent more time in mathematics.

Spend time in the Scriptures. Do not neglect Theology, Apologetics and Logic. Oh how our children need these things. No, the good life isn t about the best house, nicest clothes, name brand shoes.. When you stand before the Lord you won t be judged by how nice of a car you had, or whether your kids could spell, but the Bible is very clear: But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. (Matthew 12:36 37) Oh, dear mother, know the power of your words. It can be used of God to raise up a Godly family or used of the Devil to tear it apart. Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6) What a great promise from God, and I can guarantee you this it is easier to train children than it is to fix adults. How can a Godly mother do this training? There s a lot of books on parenting out there. I can count on one hand the number of books I recommend on the subject and I do a lot of reading. Most of them can be thrown away. Whatever you read, make sure its in line with the Word of God. That must always be your standard. Discipline Your Children The rod and reproof give wisdom: But a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. (Proverbs 29:15) Chasten thy son while there is hope, And let not thy soul spare for his crying. (Proverbs 19:18) Avoid Hypocrisy In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. (Luke 12:1 5) Children can sniff out hypocrisy very easily and they see it for what it is - repulsive and disgusting. How many children have rejected the faith because they see the life of Christ isn t

real in the private lives of Mom and Dad? If you are a hypocrite, the best you can hope for is that your children will copy your hypocrisy. More often than not, though, they will be more honest and openly rebel as they get older. Equip Your Children With a Biblical Worldview Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord. (Psalm 34:11) Where do you think that the children are going to go to learn of the Lord? A couple hours a week at church isn t enough! They aren t going to learn about Him in government schools that s for sure! II Timothy 2:15 isn t just for preachers: Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Nor is I Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: It would be good for every woman to quit the books that were intended to talk about how good she is, quit the silly romances, and read get into God s Word to see how good God is! Fall in love with the Savior! Get into some theological and apologetics studies. Whether you realize it or not you, dear mother, are on the frontlines of the battle. When the children have questions about the faith - you know the questions kids ask - Did Adam have a bellybutton? What happened to the dinosaurs? Where did Cain get his wife? How did Noah fit all the animals in the ark? Who made God? How old is the earth? Where did the fossils come from? How was Jesus birth different than my birth? What is resurrection? When those questions come, there s a possibility that a child is going to ask their mom. Are you ready to give an answer? Have you studied? Or do you waste your time in the mush of the world. Spend your time in what really matters, be a good soldier of the cross.

Back to our text, I want to notice something else from the passage. When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. (2 Timothy 1:5) which dwelt. The past tense here indicates his mother and grandmother were probably dead. This life will not last forever. One of these days you too will be spoken of in the past tense. What kind of legacy will you leave behind? How will you be remembered? What you teach your teach, your example will continue on after you are gone. Will it be the faith once delivered to the saints or will it be something else?
