Minutes of the Parish Council Meeting St. Vincent de Paul Church December13, 2016 The meeting was brought to order at 7:42pm by the Council President, Joe Yingling, with a prayer by Teilhard de Chardin. In attendance: McCahill (Pastoral Associate), Laureen Brunelli (Parish Administrator), Joe Yingling (President, Parish Council), Mary Kate Fries (Council Vice-President), Anne Freeburger (Co-Corporator), Graham G. Yearley (Co-Corporator and Council Secretary), Mark Palmer (Chair, Finance Committee), Denny McMullin (Chair, Facilities Committee), McMullin (Chair, Education and Enrichment), Mike Jacko (9:30 Mass Rep.), Meyer (Co-Chair, Social Action Committee), Janice Bonner Chair, Liturgy Committee), Lee Krempel (Outreach and Communications Committee), and Codie Perry (Jesuit Volunteer). Pastoral Associate s Report 1. The Archdiocese appointed two new bishops. It is not clear what jobs they will be assigned. Bishop Madden will remain the Urban Vicar; he has been given permission to retire. 2. The Historic Trust Board met a week ago.fr. Lawrence will remain on the board until he retires. Mark Palmer is on the board but could not attend the meeting. 3. There is $25,000 squirreled away from gifts to the Emergency Services in excess of their spending. The money was never intended for the Historic Trust and so it has been moved out of that account where it was placed temporarily. It will be moved into a money market account earmarked for the poor. One solution is to create a project on which the money may be used. It was asked, why not give the money to the Emergency Services for one of the projects it already has? 4. Fr. Lawrence has informed us that he will be retiring in the near future, probably in February. He will say a final mass as Pastor and it is hoped he will continue to celebrate the mass when he is able. He is out of bed five to six hours a day currently in the rehabilitation hospital and receiving physical therapy. There is an ongoing discussion about whether he should be moved to another facility where he might receive more physical therapy. New Business reported on the developments in the Pastoral Planning process. She received an email from Fr. Cascotti of St. Ignatius stating that he has been told by his provincial that he will not be allowed to be pastor of both St. Ignatius and St. Vincent s. We could work on mutual projects and explore other paths to being one pastorate with St. Ignatius. He suggested could be appointed as a Pastoral Life Director of St. Vincent s. This could be an alternate path for the two churches to form a pastorate where was in charge of all of the duties of a parish leadership outside of the sacramental ministries. Fr. Cascotti wants to work with St. Vincent s. He and another half-time priest are the priestly staff of St. Ignatius. There are other Jesuits living in their properties, but Fr. Cascotti is not their superior. Laureen Brunelli added that having a PLD would make growing in a relationship with St. Ignatius easier. will have meeting with Monseignor Jim Hannon, vicar to the priests of the archdiocese, and Bishop Dennis Madden on Saturday. It was brought up that we don t know if being in a pastorate with St. Leo s is off the table. So there is a good deal of uncertainty about the next steps. Mike Jacko suggested we ought to adopt an attitude

central to Jesuit spirituality of being open to all possibilities and not see them as threatening. Janice Bonner suggested that we need continuity in who is celebrating mass. But Mark Palmer said the reality of the shortage of priests means we will have to adapt to rotating priests. added that, if we were in a pastorate with St. Leo s, there would be only one priest between two churches and that masses would have to cut as the Pastoral Planning demands that priests only say three masses a weekend. There was a discussion about whether St. Vincent s ought to undertake a discussion of what we want as a part of Pastoral Planning process. Mark Palmer argued that we have had that discussion and what we want hasn t really changed in the last five years. said that the good side of having one priest for 43 years is that we have had a chance to grow spiritually with great consistency; the bad side is change can be experienced as a crisis. Mary Kate Fries said we need the strength to carry on despite not having one leader priest. There are communities that stay together without a leader priest. Fr. Lawrence s legacy is that he created a community that has been empowered and where the laity can lead. Janice agreed and suggested now is the time to show we ready for a new church model. reported that Fr. Jim Cascotti is be our celebrant at Sunday s 9:30 mass. There was a discussion about how the recent developments would be disseminated. It was agreed that would write a letter and it would be given to parishoners at one point during the mass. After mass, Fr. Cascotti and would be available to anyone with questions. Other Business 1. McMullin introduced the idea of St Vincent s being becoming a sanctuary parish. Sanctuaries for immigrants have been established at universities and in whole cities. With the coming Trump administration coming, the need for sanctuaries may become even greater. Banners could be created to show that we are a sanctuary church. 2. Meyers reported that Fr. Chuck Caterna was on the mend. Meeting was adjourned at 9:40pm with a recitation of a prayer from our Advent Reflection booklet. Minutes respectfully submitted, Graham G. Yearley, secretary and co-corporator
