The Parish News United Methodist Church of Hempstead 40 Washington Street Hempstead, NY 11550 Phone: (516) 485-6363 Email: hempsteadumc@gmail.com Web: www.umchempstead.org Summer 2017 Volume 76-No. 80 A Message From The Pastor s Desk Dear Sisters and Brothers, Just a few days ago, the New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church concluded its 218th Session at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. If you were in church last Sunday (June 11), you would have heard Mary Crayton-Johnson, our Lay Member to the Annual Conference, informing the congregation that Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton, Resident Bishop of the New York Area, had appointed me as Pastor of the United Methodist Church of Hempstead for the 2017-2018 Conference year. I am pleased to be among you and to continue doing ministry together for another year. Challenged by Bishop Bickerton to go into the community and supported by the words, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations... (Matthew 28:19), I share these thoughts with you once more. These words summarize the mission of the church of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In order for a person to make disciples, that person must first be a disciple. To put it another way, in order to introduce another person to Christ, the one doing the introduction must first have a personal and and ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ. One cannot lead another to a place where one has not been oneself. Every disciple must be prepared to share his or her faith with others. According to 1 Peter 3:15, Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting of the hope that is in you. If a person is able to put into words how that person came to know Christ, then that person ought to be able to point or lead someone else to Christ. Making disciples call for an investment of our time. We must be willing to build one-on-one relationships, encourage one another, and take seriously the task of seeking, inviting, welcoming, and gathering others into the body of Christ. We are to consider how God can best use us and take on what role the Holy Spirit leads us to take. We can approach family, friends, neighbors and acquaintances and invite them to worship services or church activities. Our mission is to present Jesus Christ so that others are led to put their trust in him, accept him as their Savior, and serve him as Lord in the fellowship of his church. Let s take advantage of these days, reach out to those around us, and share the good news of Christ with them. Yours in His Service, St. Clair A. Samuel

Reflections Where is Dad? He s standing over the crib watching me as I sleep The pride he feels is a blessing - For the son or daughter he ll keep He s going out daily to a job, through which he provides for me He s gone many hours -for this - much of my achievement he did not see He s cheering me on when time is due for me to partake in a game Afterwards he lifts me high, clap his hands and shout my name He was counseling when the need arise It made me happy and sometimes sad Yet through it all his love was there Guiding, protecting, for this I was glad He often stands alone in a crisis, sometimes brought on by me When I m too busy to take a stand, it s always where my Dad will be HAPPY FATHER S DAY TO ALL FATHERS Janice Wellington / June 2017 Mother s Day Tea The Mother s Day Tea, an annual tradition at our church, was held on May 14th, 2017, and had 47participants from the congregation. Thank you to all the mothers, grandmothers, and friends who participated! 10
