I am looking for a church that is trying to love the Lord with all its heart, and with all its soul, and with all its mind, and with all its strength. I desire a church with an active membership; with hearts willing and wanting to serve where Christ is calling them to do so. In short, I desire a church that is working to understand what it means to take up the cross daily (not just on Sunday) and follow Him. Present Call and Accomplishments: I am Director of Youth Ministry at Shadyside Presbyterian Church, a large urban, upper-middle class congregation of 1000 members. The youth ministry at Shadyside includes Jr. High and Sr. High Sunday school classes, Jr. High and Sr. High youth groups, and a bi-annual Confirmation program. I have led several youth mission trips, including an international trip to Arecibo, Puerto Rico. I have also organized and led a number of youth retreats. Over the past three years, the youth program has experienced modest numeric growth, especially in the Jr. High program. This growth can be attributed to moving from a combined youth program to splitting into Jr. High and Sr. High to allow more age-focused activities and faith discussions. Along William L. Adams, III (Tres) 4

with numeric growth, and more importantly, the youth have grown spiritually. Through practicing the spiritual disciplines of reading Scripture, prayer, and fellowship, coupled with lively discussion and teaching, the youth are gaining a better understanding of what it means to be a Christian in today s world. The confirmation class at Shadyside is held every two years and designed for youth in grades 8 and 9. During my tenure, I have had the privilege of writing the curriculum and designing the current confirmation program. The program lasts a full school year and exposes the confirmands to all aspects of the Christian faith from a Reformed perspective. We meet every Sunday morning during the Christian education hour, and take a weekend retreat at the halfway point of the year. While I personally teach the majority of the classes, all four of Shadyside s pastors, as well as seminary interns and elders serve as guest teachers. We also travel to neighboring Christian churches during Lent to experience various forms and ways of worshipping our Lord on Sunday morning. While at Shadyside, I have also had the opportunity to teach adult Christian education classes and preach during the Wednesday evening Vespers service. I have developed a volunteer network of teachers, parents, and lay people who graciously and joyfully serve the youth and help to guide and teach them in the Christian faith. Because of this volunteer network, I have had the freedom to occasionally serve as a guest preacher at area Presbyterian churches and as a guest speaker at a Pittsburgh Presbytery sponsored confirmation retreat. Leadership Style: I am a coach at heart and my leadership style reflects this energy. I am a Jesus Coach with enthusiasm and passion, I push, train, teach, and motivate others to live their lives for Christ. As a coach, I recognize that I cannot make the journey for people; rather I believe my role is to run alongside people on their life journey, pointing toward Christ, and keeping them focused on Him and His call on their lives. Theological Issues: I believe the key theological issues currently facing the church and society center around the church s relevance in society. I feel the church is in very real danger of becoming increasingly irrelevant in today s society. As the church continues to allow more and more secular organizations to do what it is called to do giving food and water to the hungry and thirsty, inviting in the stranger, clothing the naked, visiting the prisoner the church will become irrelevant. As the church continues to not stand firm on the rock of Christ on any issue, the church will become irrelevant. As the church and the Christian faith increasingly William L. Adams, III (Tres) 5

becomes less of a priority in the lives of our youth and families, we will continue to see the doors of our churches closing. My mantra is simple: God is not an activity! We, as God s people, must continually witness to what Christ is doing in our lives. We must take up our cross daily and follow Him. This mantra shapes my ministry. Every morning that we are blessed to awake, we must understand that we are blessed and empowered to do the Lord s work and serve His calling on our lives. My passion for this mantra is reflected in my teaching, preaching, and writing. Our first and foremost priority in our lives must be God the rest is just details.
