CATHOLIC CHARISMATIC RENEWAL COUNCIL (CCRC) Novena to the Holy Spirit Serving the Archdiocese of Toronto www.ccrctor.com

Dear Brothers and Sisters, On behalf of our Archbishop Thomas Cardinal Collins and the CCRC, we welcome you to the 2013 Novena to the Holy Spirit and the Pentecost Vigil Rally. This is a time of Grace and spiritual opportunity when the Risen Lord Jesus will fulfill His promises to you and His Church. Come to all the days of Novena and Rally to catch the wave of the Spirit. Come as you are, open your heart with docility and joy and allow the Holy Spirit to do His mighty work in you. Bring your family and friends and God will bless you abundantly. We are united with the multitudes gathered in Rome with our Holy Father Pope Francis and throughout the world, to welcome a new Pentecost in our lives. In Christ, Deacon Carlos Nogueira and Cecilia, Liaison Deacon Mark Romeo and June, Associate Liaison

BEFORE MASS (Each Day) On the promptings of Sr. Elena, Pope Leo XIII issued several important documents concerning the Holy Spirit. First in 1895, he wrote an apostolic letter, Provida Matris Caritate, which he ended by asking all the faithful to celebrate a solemn novena (nine days of prayer) to the Holy Spirit between the feasts of Ascension and Pentecost for the intention of the reunion of Christianity. Later, Pope Leo XIII stated that the novena was not to be limited to a only one year but was to be a perpetual novena, done every year between the feasts of Ascension and Pentecost, again for the same intention of the reunion of Christianity. Another important event, again at the request of Sr. Elena, took place on January 1, 1901. Pope Leo XIII invoked the Holy Spirit by singing the hymn Veni Creator Spiritus, in the name of the entire Church. LET US PRAY: All: Come, Holy Spirit, in Your power and might to renew the face of the earth. Renew Your wonders in this our day, as by a new Pentecost. Grant to Your Church that, being of one mind and steadfast in prayer with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and following the lead of blessed Peter, it may advance the reign of our Divine Savior, the reign of truth and justice, the reign of love and peace. Amen (Invocation of the Holy Spirit by Pope John XXIII V: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created, All: And You shall renew the face of the earth. V: O God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of Your faithful, grant that by that same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation, through Christ our Lord. All: Amen.

AT THE END OF MASS (Each Day) HYMN TO THE HOLY SPIRIT English Version (this is a poem and not a precise literal translation of the Latin) Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest, and in our hearts take up Thy rest; come with Thy grace and heav'nly aid, To fill the hearts which Thou hast made. O Comforter, to Thee we cry, Thou heav'nly gift of God most high, Thou Fount of life, and Fire of love, and sweet anointing from above. O Finger of the hand divine, the sevenfold gifts of grace are thine; true promise of the Father thou, who dost the tongue with power endow. Thy light to every sense impart, and shed thy love in every heart; thine own unfailing might supply to strengthen our infirmity. Drive far away our ghostly foe, and thine abiding peace bestow; if thou be our preventing Guide, no evil can our steps betide. Praise we the Father and the Son and Holy Spirit with them One; and may the Son on us bestow the gifts that from the Spirit flow.

V: Welcome Holy Spirit come and fill us with the power of Your Love. Immerse us in the fountain of living waters, and inflame us with the fire of the Gospel. You are the Lord and Giver of Life; You proceed from the Father and the Son, and with the Father and the Son You are adored and glorified. Release in us the plenitude of Your holy gifts, Revive the enthusiasm of all Your people, renew the faith of the Church and expand the Kingdom of God. All: Amen AFTER THE HYMN: The Novena Prayer of the Day by Celebrant (See day by day) PRAISE AND WORSHIP SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS (Theme of the Day) ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY SPIRIT (To be said Each Day) All Kneel All: On my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, I offer myself, soul and body to You, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness of Your purity, the unerring keenness of Your justice, and the might of Your love. You are the Strength and Light of my soul. In You I live and move and am. I desire never to grieve You by unfaithfulness to grace and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against You. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Your light, and listen to Your voice, and follow Your gracious inspirations. I cling to You and give myself to You and ask You, by Your compassion to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds, and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore You, Adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, to keep me in Your grace that I may never sin against You. Give me grace, O Holy Spirit, Spirit of the Father and the Son to say to You always and everywhere, "Speak Lord for Your servant heareth." Amen. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be RECESSIONAL HYMN

DAY 1: COME AS YOU ARE - GOD LOVES YOU The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let everyone who hears say, Come. And let everyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who wishes take the water of life as a gift. Revelation 22:17 Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 To, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Isaiah 55:1 On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, Out of the believer s heart shall flow rivers of living water. Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7:37-39 She said, No one, sir. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again. John 8:11 Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:17 PRAYER: Dear Holy Spirit, thank You for Your invitation of profound love for me. Thank You for taking me just as I am. Thank You for replacing my thoughts of guilt and condemnation with thoughts of Your immense love and mercy. Thank You for stretching Your arms out to me despite my many periods of unfaithfulness. Teach me Jesus to love You with that same unconditional love. Help me love my brothers and sisters with that same sincere love knowing that it is the greatest sacrifice Your heart desires. And in the process it is the ultimate gift I can give to myself. In Your Holy name Amen.

DAY 2: GOD LOVES YOU, NO MATTER WHAT - YOUR RANSOM IS PAID AND YOU ARE ALREADY SAVED. JESUS DID IT FOR YOU For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8 the LORD appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. Jeremiah 31:3 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. John 15:13 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. John 10:11 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. John 3:16 PRAYER: Dear Holy Spirit, thank You for looking beyond my many weaknesses and for always seeking to create the-best-version-of-myself in me. Your love for me and every other child of God in this world always existed but manifested itself more profoundly when You came to live with us in this world. Teach me to be self giving like You. Let me never count the cost Dear Spirit knowing that You have already paid the price. May I always learn to submit my weaknesses to You knowing that Your love will transform them for my good and for Your greater glory. Amen

DAY 3: YOUR ARE PRECIOUS for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. 1 Thessalonians 5:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5 For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. Ephesians 2:10 I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6 then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being. Genesis 2:7 The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty[a] gives me life. Job 33:4 Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Isaiah 43:4 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well. Psalm 139:14 PRAYER: Dear Holy Spirit, thank You for breathing Your Spirit into me. Thank You for permitting Your light to shine into my darkness. Thank You for chipping away the rough edges in my life. You are a God of perfection and grace and I thank You for creating me from those same perfect hands. Give me the humility and wisdom to see myself as that perfect being You have made me to be. Help me strive to conquer the many weaknesses that steal me of the countless gifts You have in store for me. May each day of my life draw me deeper into Your presence. Amen.

DAY 4: TRUST THE HOLY SPIRIT For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba! Father! Romans 8:15 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes[a] with sighs too deep for words. Romans 8:26 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. Luke 3:22 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. Matthew 3:16 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. John 1:5 PRAYER: Dear Holy Spirit, thank You for Your Spirit of light and freedom. Thank You for Your Spirit of gentleness and truth. Thank You for Your Spirit of mercy and love. Thank You for bringing us the Unity of the Trinity. Thank You for releasing me from the bondage of sin and death. Teach me to be always open to Your gifts of abundance. Help me Holy Spirit in my moments of fear and doubt. Let me remember that a trusting heart is most pleasing to You. And through submitting to You, my life will be transformed for my good and for Your greater glory. Amen

DAY 5: GOD S PLANS FOR YOU For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Jeremiah 29:11 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. John 10:10 And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Psalm 32:8 And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 The LORD appeared to him[a] from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. Jeremiah 31:3 PRAYER: Dear Holy Spirit, thank You for Your Omnipotent and Omnipresent Spirit. Thank You for being the source of good counsel and right teaching. Thank You for Your Spirit of freedom and growth. Thank You Holy Spirit for instructing me and directing me toward my needs rather than toward my wants. Teach me Jesus to clearly see the difference between my needs and my wants. Help me recognize the freedom this and other disciplines will bring be both spiritually and temporally. Teach me to be just a patient with others who like me often need to be taken back to the classroom of Love. In Your Holy Name Jesus. Amen

DAY 6: DO NOT WORRY, DO NOT BE AFRAID Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Matthew 6:25 When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; Matthew 10:19 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 So we can say with confidence, The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me? Hebrews 13:6 What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? Romans 8:31 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Psalm 46:11 Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 He said to his disciples, Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. Luke 12:22 For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7 PRAYER: Dear Holy Spirit, thank You for being my Fearless Worrier and my Rock in times of loneliness and fear. Thank You for being my yesterday, my today and my forever. Thank You for Your Spirit of Speech of Silence. Thank You Holy Spirit for interceding for me in words my heart often cannot pronounce even in groaning utterances. Thank You Holy Spirit for providing my every need. Teach me Jesus to trust in the purity of Your Love. Teach me to recognize the power of Your magnitude. Teach me Jesus to submit to Your Spirit especially in periods of deep intercession, knowing that You always seek to provide me the best for this journey. Help me always remember that Your love me enough to bring out the-best-version-of-myself in me. In Your Holy Name! Amen

DAY 7: GOD WANTS A RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU Jesus answered him, Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. John 14:23 I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. John 14:2-3 Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. Jeremiah 29:12 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Deuteronomy 6:5 I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. John 15:15 Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them. John 17:24-26 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. Mark 12:30 When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, Zacchaeus hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today. Luke 19:5 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba! Father! Romans 8:15 Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me. Revelation 3:20 For it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy. 1 Peter 1:16 You shall be holy to me; for I the LORD am holy, and I have separated you from the other peoples to be mine. Leviticus 20:26 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:48 PRAYER: Dear Holy Spirit, thank You for being the Spirit of kindness and gentleness. Thank You for offering me the gift of adoption into Your Triune Family of Love and abundant graces. Thank You for being a constant presence and intimate part of my entire life. Thank You for being a God that listens at all time. Help me recognize You at the door of my heart, as You wait patiently and non-intrusively. Give me the wisdom to see that loving You is not a command but an act of a deeper relationship and a desire to know You better. Help me see Dear Spirit that holiness is a virtue that comes from You alone and unity with You will endow me with this gift. In the Name of the Father, Son and Spirit! Amen.

DAY 8: THE AMAZING GIFT If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. John 14:25-26 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. John 20:22 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Acts 2:1-4 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit[a] to those who ask him! Luke 11:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness. Galatians 5:22 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says Let Jesus be cursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. Romans 12:6-8 If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. John 14:15-17

"Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 1 John 4:7 PRAYER: Dear Holy Spirit, thank You for the awesome gift of Yourself. Thank You for all the pruning and the virtues You bring forth from this pitiable heart of mine. Thank You for the constant outpouring of Your Spirit through numerous gifts that transform me and the Body of Christ. Thank You for patiently working to produce the best-version-of-myself in me. Teach me Dear Spirit to seek You with an open and sincere heart. Teach me to submit willing to Your pruning knowing that through that alone will I produce true fruit. Help me purify my heart and my ways knowing that only through purity can I truly reflect Your love to others. In the Name of the Father, Son and Spirit! Amen.

DAY 9: GO AND PROCLAIM THE GOOD NEWS And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Matthew 28:18-20 Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 1 John 4:7 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. John 13:34 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; 2 Timothy 1:6 I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! Luke 12:49 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. Acts 8:14-17 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied Acts 19:5-6 And he said to them, Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. The one who believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover. Mark 16:15-18 PRAYER: Dear Spirit of Love we thank You for You made us; Spirit of Love we thank You that You sustain us; Spirit of Love we thank You for You rekindle us; Spirit of Love we thank You for calling us and that You commission us; Spirit of Love we thank You for empowering us; Spirit of Love thank You for Your gifts of abundance. Oh! Spirit of Love, help me show Your love in all its purity and let me not distort it with my weaknesses. Spirit of Love, help me lean on Your

strength and not to succumb to my pride; Spirit of Love please help me answer Your call and Your commissioning with humility and sincere submission; Spirit of Love let me always recognize that all the goodness within me comes from You and You alone, may I never depend on my own strength. We make all our prayers in to the source of Love, the Father, Son and Spirit! Amen. All References taken from: The New Revised Standard Version
