ORDER OF SERVICE August 14, 2016 Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost PRELUDE Rejoice Ye Christians Karg-Elert Air Leclair WORDS OF WELCOME INTROIT Beauty Native American Chant CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: All: Leader: All: Leader: All: We gather this day, and much is visible: Our smiles may show our joy; our eyes may speak of pain. We come to this place, seeking signs of the living God: We may sense something holy here; we may reach out to mystery. Will we see God today? Will our living make God s love visible? Let us worship God, Holy Mystery, Eternal Love. *The congregation is invited to stand.

*HYMN The Spacious Firmament on High Haydn

*OPENING PRAYER God of all people, We come to worship today to hear your good news, to hear of faith, hope and love ringing out from your kingdom. We know that doubt, fear and hatred can shake even the strongest. Shape us into faithful hopeful people, fill us with your love that passes all understanding. We pray this together in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. *GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. SUMMER HYMN SING Children may now leave for Church School SCRIPTURE LESSONS Romans 12: 9-13 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord s people who are in need.practice hospitality. 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7,13 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, al-

ways perseveres. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. SERMON Prayer, Praise, Protest: Keep Hope Alive The Rev. Dan Hugh PASTORAL PRAYER OFFERING Invitation Anthem When In Our Music God is Glorified Stanford *Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Hymn My Country Tis of Thee (verse 4) Our fathers God, to thee, author of liberty, to thee we sing; long may our land be bright with freedom s holy light; protect us by thy might, Great God, our King. THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION Invitation to the Table The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving Leader: God be with you. All: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to God. Leader: Let us give thanks to God Most High. All: It is right to give God our thanks and praise. Leader: It is right, and a good and joyful thing always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. At the be-

ginning of time, your Spirit moved upon the waters of chaos as you called forth land and sea, mountain and valley, desert and tundra, jungle and grassy plain. Your Spirit went before Moses and the people of Israel, a pillar of fire by night, leading them through the wilderness. Your Spirit roused the hearts of the prophets who proclaimed your judgement upon the nations and called for repentance among your people. For these mighty acts of your Holy Spirit, we praise your name and join in the eternal hymn of all the angels and saints who sing: Sanctus sung by all to the tune Nicaea Holy! Holy! Holy! One God Almighty! All your works shall praise your name in earth and sky and sea! Holy! Holy! Holy! Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is Christ who comes to set us free! Words of Remembrance Leader: Holy are you, indeed, and blessed is Jesus Christ your Son. By your Spirit you anointed him to bring good news to the poor and to proclaim release to the captives. By your Spirit, Jesus confronted the forces of oppression. In your Spirit he rejoiced as his disciples did great work in his name. At his death on the cross Jesus yielded up his spirit to you, and by the Holy Spirit you raised him from the dead. This same enlightening, empowering, enlivening Spirit, Jesus promised to all who keep his commandment to love as he has loved. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said: This is my body, which is for you. Do this to remember me. In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this whenever you drink it, to remember me. Therefore, in remembrance of the mighty acts and blessed promises of Jesus, we offer ourselves to you in union with his offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith: All: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Prayer of Consecration Leader: Send your Holy Spirit upon us, gathered here out of love for you, and on this bread and fruit of the vine. Let the bread we break be true fellowship in the body of Christ. Let the cup we share be a true participation in the new covenant in his blood. By your Spirit manifest in us the power of your redeeming love that we may be Christ for the world, serving in his name. Through your son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all glory and honor is yours, almighty God, now and forever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Sharing of the Bread and the Cup These are the gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died and was raised for you. All are invited to come forward, as directed by our Ushers, to receive the bread and cup standing in a semi-circle in front of the communion table, dipping the bread into the cup and remaining until the words of blessing.

Communion Music O Bread of Life From Heaven Isaac Prayer of Thanksgiving Bountiful God, we give you thanks that you have refreshed us at your table by granting us the presence of Christ. Strengthen our faith, increase our love for one another, and send us forth into the world in courage and peace, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. *Hymn No. 687 In Christ There Is No East or West CHURCH PRAYER Our Heavenly Father, shed forth thy blessed spirit upon all our lives. Make each one of us an instrument in thy hands for good. Purify our hearts, strengthen our minds and bodies, fill us with Christian love. Let no pride, no self-conceit, no rivalry, no ill-will ever spring up among us. Make us earnest and true, wise and prudent, giving no just cause for offense and may thy holy peace rest upon us this day and every day throughout the coming week, sweetening our trials, cheering us in our work, and keeping us faithful to the end, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. BENEDICTION AND CHORAL RESPONSE POSTLUDE Basse et Dessus de Trompette Clerambault ROUND HILL COMMUNITY CHURCH CREED I believe in God, the one universal Father of all mankind, revealed supremely in Jesus Christ, our Lord, and present with us to guide, comfort and inspire in the Holy Spirit. I believe in the Kingdom of God; and in the mission of the Christian Church to proclaim the Gospel to all the world, exalting the worship of the Lord our God, and laboring for the progress of knowledge, the

promotion of righteousness, the reign of peace, and the realization of human brotherhood. United in Christian love, we pray and labor for the coming of the Kingdom, the triumph of righteousness and the life everlasting. Amen. ROUND HILL COMMUNITY CHURCH MISSON STATEMENT We, the members of the Round Hill Community Church, a self-governing, non-denominational body, seek to foster a community of faith where people of all ages and backgrounds pursue spiritual growth; where God is worshipped in Word and praised in music; where friends are made and hurts are healed.
