June 4, 2017 The Day of Pentecost 8:00am & 9:30 a.m. AS WE GATHER What does this mean? This question might sound familiar to anyone who has spent time studying Luther s Small Catechism. As the catechism covers each of the Six Chief Parts, the question is asked again and again: What does this mean? And then explanation follows. This same question was asked by many in the crowd on the Day of Pentecost, as recorded in Acts 2. As the people hear and see these miraculous events, they are amazed and perplexed, asking one another, What does this mean? In the verses that follow, Peter gives explanation from the Old Testament. He proclaims that God has fulfilled His promise to pour out His Spirit on all flesh. The gift of the Holy Spirit has been given for all nations. As you celebrate the Day of Pentecost today, reflect on these events by asking yourself, What does this mean for me? WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN: Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord LSB 497 INVOCATION AND OPENING SENTENCES P: On the Day of Pentecost, we begin in the name of our triune God, which was placed on us at our Baptism. In the name of the Father, C: who created us. P: In the name of the Son, C: who redeemed us. P: In the name of the Holy Spirit, C: who sanctifies us. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: The psalmist prays and confesses, saying: C: Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to Your steadfast love remember me. For Your name s sake, O Lord, pardon my guilt, for it is great. P: These words of confession are our prayer too. In repentant faith, we acknowledge our sin. We ask that the Lord look upon us, who are by nature sinful and unclean, and remember His steadfast love. We repent of our great 2

guilt and ask that the Lord would pardon it for the sake of the name of His Son, Jesus Christ. C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. P: According to His steadfast love, the Lord remembers you and has mercy upon you. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. INTROIT P: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, C: and kindle in them the fire of Your love. Alleluia. P: O LORD, how manifold are Your works! C: In wisdom have You made them all; the earth is full of Your creatures. P: These all look to You, C: to give them their food in due season. P: When You give it to them, they gather it up; C: when You open Your hand, they are filled with good things. P: When You send forth Your Spirit, they are created, C: and You renew the face of the ground. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, C: and kindle in them the fire of Your love. Alleluia. SALUTATION AND PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. O God, C: on this day You once taught the hearts of Your faithful people by sending them the light of Your Holy Spirit. P: Grant us in our day by the same Spirit to have a right understanding in all things and evermore to rejoice in His holy consolation; 3

C: through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Sit OLD TESTAMENT: Numbers 11:24-30 So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the Tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took of the Spirit that was on him and put the Spirit on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not do so again. However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the Tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp. A young man ran and told Moses, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses' aide since youth, spoke up and said, "Moses, my lord, stop them!" But Moses replied, "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord 's people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!" Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God! HYMN: 9:30am only Come Down, O Love Divine LSB 501 EPISTLE: Acts 2:1-21 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the 4

parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine. " Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: " 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand HOLY GOSPEL: John 7:37-39 L: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the seventh chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. APOSTLE S CREED C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, 5

was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Sit CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN: O Day Full of Grace LSB 503 SERMON: Could You Use a Drink? (John 7:37-39) Stand OFFERING (Please sign and date the Rite of Friendship pad located in the pew. The children are invited to bring their offerings to the front at this time.) MUSICAL OFFERING: 8:00am The Lord is My Shepherd. setting by Don Wyrtzen Choral setting transcribed for piano Solo by Linda Kothman The Lord is my Shepherd, He meets all my needs To a restful oasis he tenderly leads My soul He restores, and the right path I take He abundantly blesses for His own name's sake. He leads through the valley of death's darkest gloom But because He's beside me, I shall not fear doom; His rod and His staff my security He guides and protects me devotedly. The one perfect host, He graciously cares While my foes are restrained, a feast He prepares; The Lord fills my cup with His own rarest wine, And anoints me with perfume as I come and dine. Pursued by prosperity all my life long, His unfailing kindness will be my sweet song; And in my Lords mansions forever I'll be, With fullness of JOY for eternity... for Eternity...for...ETERNITY. 9:30am Come Down, O Love Divine..setting by Raymond H. Haan PRAYERS 6

LORD S PRAYER ALL: Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Stand (9:30am continues on page 10, 8:00am continues here) Holy Communion P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 8

WORDS OF OUR LORD PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26 C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Revelation 22:20 THE PEACE OF THE LORD P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. Sit About Holy Communion The Lord s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord s table. Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p. 329-330 in the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord s Supper, please pick up a copy of What is the Lord s Supper? at the Information table in the entryway. Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. If your health requires glutenfree wafers, they are available upon request. Speak to the pastor prior to the service. Our pastors are happy to speak to you further if you have any questions. DISTRIBUTION HYMN: Come Down, O Love Divine LSB 501 Stand POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING P: Let us pray We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have met us today with Your Son s very body and blood and have sent us from Your Supper with Your Spirit placed on us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 9

(9:30am continues here) BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you, The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen. CLOSING HYMN: Holy Spirit, Light Divine LSB 496 John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever 10

Sharing the Caring Christ with All People John 7:37-39: The Festival of Pentecost is a day full of celebration. In the Old Testament, it was a festival of first fruits, similar to our celebration of Thanksgiving. People dropped everything they were doing and traveled to Jerusalem to offer God a tithe; the first fruits offering of thanksgiving to God for His blessing to them. God chose this day as the birthday of His Church. There would be no Church without the working of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit brings faith through clear communication of God s Word. Faith comes through hearing the Word. The celebration of Pentecost beckons us to keep breathing, inhaling the Spirit of God into our very souls and exhaling the Word of God to the world. Pentecost challenges us to keep ourselves always open to the Spirit who seeks us out. The Spirit calls and enlightens us to make ourselves available to God, where He equips us for His mission and ministry. Share the birthday blessings with others. Today s Radio Broadcast is sponsored by Carol Kiekow in memory of Alma Kiekow. We thank her for sponsoring this broadcast. We have sponsorship openings in July and August. If you would like to sponsor a broadcast please complete a form and turn it in. Forms are available in the church office. The radio transmission enables our shut-ins, as well as others in our community to hear and participate in our worship. The service airs on WVAL 800 on the AM dial, at 8:00am, and live on the internet at www.800wval.com. Enrollment at Prince of Peace Lutheran School for the 2017/2018 School Year is now open. We are a Christ-centered school offering an excellent education for children from Preschool through 8 th Grade. Class sizes are small and the faculty both caring and experienced. Financial aid is available for qualified families. We also have Before School and After School care programs.
