Come, Holy Spirit, Our Advocate, our Counselor. Come, Holy Spirit, Teacher of Wisdom, Reminder of Christ. Come, Holy Spirit, Granter of forgiveness, giver of peace. Come, Holy Spirit, May we feel God breathing through our worship; may we receive The Holy Spirit in this place. 3 The Reverend Dr. David J. Smazik *HYMN 289 On Pentecost They Gathered Munich CONFESSION AND PARDON The Reverend Dawn Bryan PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison) ++ God of new creation, we confess that we have failed to trust your bountiful goodness. By the power of the Holy Spirit you brought forth the earth and its creatures in abundance. Yet we hoard earth s resources and refuse to share your gifts. We dishonor your generosity by withholding our charity to those in need. We betray your kindness by dealing harshly with our Continued
enemies. We disregard your compassion by severely judging the sins of others. Forgive us. By the power of your Spirit renew our hearts and free us from sins that we may enjoy the fullness of your blessing upon all creation. SILENT PRAYER KYRIE (Hymn 291, verses 3 & 4) Spirit ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS (responsive) +++ God comes unexpectedly to those willing to wait and listen and trust. The Spirit amazes and astonishes even those who wait expectantly. There is more to life than the things we can see and more in the things we see than our eyes can discern. So, too, God is more than we can know or imagine. Even now the Holy Spirit is resting on each of us and on this family of God s people. I declare to you, by the power of the Spirit, we are forgiven. *RESPONSE TO FORGIVENESS (Hymn 726, verses 2 & 5) A TIME WITH YOUNG CHRISTIANS Will You Come and Follow Me Alexandra Mead PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (unison) +++ Loving God, by the power of your Holy Spirit, speak to us in the language of our hearts, that we may hear your Word with understanding and answer your call with confidence. Amen. FIRST SCRIPTURE READING (responsively) Acts 2:1-8a, 11b-21 The Message When the Feast of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Without warning there was a sound like a strong wind, gale force no one could tell where it came from. It filled the whole building. Then, like a wildfire, the Holy Spirit spread through their ranks, and they started speaking in a number of different languages as the Spirit prompted them. There were many Jews staying in Jerusalem just then, devout pilgrims from all over the world. When they heard the sound, they came on the run. Then when 4
they heard, one after another, their own mother tongues being spoken, they were thunderstruck. They couldn t for the life of them figure out what was going on, and kept saying, Aren t these all Galileans? How come we re hearing them talk in our various mother tongues? They re speaking our languages, describing God s mighty works! Their heads were spinning; they couldn t make head or tail of any of it. They talked back and forth, confused: What s going on here? Others joked, They re drunk on cheap wine. That s when Peter stood up and, backed by the other eleven, spoke out with bold urgency: Fellow Jews, all of you who are visiting Jerusalem, listen carefully and get this story straight. These people aren t drunk as some of you suspect. They haven t had time to get drunk it s only nine o clock in the morning. This is what the prophet Joel announced would happen: In the Last Days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on every kind of people: Your sons will prophesy, also your daughters; Your young men will see visions, your old men dream dreams. When the time comes, I ll pour out my Spirit on those who serve me, men and women both, and they ll prophesy. I ll set wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth below, Blood and fire and billowing smoke, the sun turning black and the moon blood-red, before the Day of the Lord arrives, the Day tremendous and marvelous; And whoever calls out for help to me, God, will be saved. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM Come Down, O Love Divine John Leavitt The Summer Choir (b. 1956) Amy Hamilton-Soto, violin 5
SECOND SCRIPTURE READING John 7:37-39 The Message On the final and climactic day of the Feast, Jesus took his stand. He cried out, If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Rivers of living water will brim and spill out of the depths of anyone who believes in me this way, just as the Scripture says. (He said this in regard to the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were about to receive. The Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet been glorified.) This is the Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God! SERMON I m Trying Not to Be Pushy Dr. Lawrence *HYMN 280 Come, O Spirit, Dwell Among Us Ebenezer MOMENT FOR MINISTRY: The Rev. David C. Lawrence Library Joyce Zelmer GREETING/OFFERING OURSELVES AND OUR GIFTS TO GOD (Please sign and pass the friendship pad, found in the pew, to the person next to you. Offering envelopes and prayer request cards are located in the pew pockets for your convenience. Cards will be collected with the offering.) OFFERTORY Veni Sancte Spiritus from Lux Aeterna Morten Lauridsen The Chancel Choir (b. 1943) Come, Holy Spirit, send forth from heaven the ray of thy light. Come, Father of the poor, come, giver of the gifts, come, light of hearts. Thou best of Consolers, sweet guest of the soul, sweet refreshment. In labor, thou art rest, in heat the tempering, in grief, the consolation. O light most blessed, fill the inmost heart of all thy faithful. Without your grace, there is nothing in us, nothing that is not harmful. Cleanse what is sordid, moisten what is arid, heal what is hurt. Flex what is rigid, fire what is frigid, correct what goes astray. Grant to thy faithful, those trusting in thee, thy sacred seven-fold gifts. Grant the reward of virtue, grant the deliverance of salvation, grant everlasting joy. *RESPONSE TO THE OFFERING (Hymn 607, Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow) Old Hundredth *PRAYER OF DEDICATION 6

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. *HYMN 295 Go to the World! Sine Nomine *BENEDICTION + As you go forth from this place, may the wind of the Spirit startle your senses and blow through your life; may the fire of the Spirit scorch your complacency and light your way, and may the blessing of the Holy One Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer rest with you now and forevermore.
