Trinity 4 1123 Marsh Street Mankato, MN 56001 / (507)345-4966 / church@mtolivelutheran.org Pastors John J. Petersen & Luke Ulrich / Principal Larry Rude Welcome! In the name of our risen Savior we welcome you to Mt. Olive and thank you for worshipping with us this morning. If you are a guest please fill out a Guest Card (found in front of you in the hymnbook rack) or sign our guest book in the entry. We invite you to come and worship with us again soon. Large Print copies of the order of service from the ELS Hymnary are available from the usher stand in the back of the sanctuary. For the Hearing Impaired: Our facility is equipped with a hearing assistance system. Please ask an usher for a receiver. Explanation of the Week: "Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful"(luke 6:36-42). The old Adam in us, however, wants to condemn and seek vengeance. But the Lord says, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay" (Rom 12:14-21). To condemn, to avenge yourself, is to put yourself in the place of God. It is to fail to trust that He is just. Ultimately, it is to disbelieve that Jesus suffered the full vengeance for all wrongs. Only Christ is merciful as the Father is merciful. He is the one who overcame all evil with the good of His cross, forgiving even His executioners. Jesus is our Joseph, who comforts us with words of pardon and reconciliation (Gen 50:15-21). He is the One who does not condemn but gives life that runs over. Only through faith in Christ are we sons of the Father, being merciful, forgiving, doing good to our enemies. For in Christ we know that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us (Rom 8:8-13).

Order of Service, Office of Prime (p. 108) ~Hymn 22 Let All the World in Every Corner Sing ~Versicles and Gloria Patri (p. 108) P: Make haste, O God, to deliver me C: Make haste to help me, O Lord. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forevermore. Amen. ~Confession of Sin (p. 108) C: Almighty God, heavenly Father: I have sinned against You through my own fault, in thought, word, and deed. For the sake of the suffering, death, and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, forgive me all my sin, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen. ~Absolution (p. 109) P: The almighty and merciful Lord has granted us pardon and forgiveness of all our sins, grace for true repentance and amendment of life, and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen. ~Psalm Hymn 591 May God Bestow on Us His Grace ~Old Testament Lesson Genesis 50:15-21 When Joseph s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, Perhaps Joseph will hate us, and may actually repay us for all the evil which we did to him. So they sent messengers to Joseph, saying, Before your father died he commanded, saying, Thus you shall say to Joseph: I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your brothers and their sin; for they did evil to you. Now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father. And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. Then his brothers also went and fell down before his face, and they said, Behold, we are your servants. Joseph said to them, Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones. And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. 2

~Epistle Lesson 1 Thessalonians 1:3-10 We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath. ~Hymn 421 We Are Called by One Vocation ~Holy Gospel & Sermon Text Luke 6:36-42 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you. And He spoke a parable to them: Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch? A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. And why do you look at the speck in your brother s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye, when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother s eye. ~Sermon Theme: Having Been Shown Mercy We Now Show Mercy ~Offering & Hymn 420 Blest Be the Tie That Binds ~Responsory (p.108) P: O Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy upon us 3

C: O Lord Jesus, seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us. P: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost C: O Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy upon us. P: Arise, O Christ, and help us. C: And deliver us for Your name s sake. ~Prayers ~Lord s Prayer C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. ~Collect (p. 108) P: O Lord Jesus Christ, bright Sun of the world: shine upon my spirit and drive away the night of sin, that I may walk in Your holy light all my life and even forevermore. C: Amen. ~Canticle (p. 108) P: Come, Holy Spirit, and fill the hearts of Your faithful people and kindle in them the fire of Your love. C: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. Come, Holy Spirit, and fill the hearts of Your faithful people and kindle in them the fire of Your love. 4

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord: C: Who made heaven and earth. P: Let us bless the Lord: C: Thanks be to God. P: The Lord Almighty order this day and all our doings in His peace.
