Amen. The Lesson: Acts 2:1-11 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God. The Psalm: Psalm 104 [Benedic, anima mea] Chant, William Turle (1823-1889) Praise the Lord, O my soul: O Lord my God, thou art be- come ex- ceed ing glorious; O Lord, how manifold are thy works: the earth is full of thy riches. When thou takest away their breath, they die, and are turn d a- gain to their dust. When thou lettest thy breath go forth, they shall be made: and thou shalt re- new the face of the earth. The glorious Majesty of the Lord shall en- dure for ever: the Lord shall re- joice in his works. And so shall my words please him: my joy shall be in the Lord. The Epistle: I Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 Brethren, no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body -- Jews or Greeks, slaves or free -- and all were made to drink of one Spirit. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint John. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord. On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, Peace be with you. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. V. The Gospel of the Lord. R. Praise be to thee, O Christ. All to be confirmed shall answer: Do you, therefore, renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, with all covetous desires of the same, and the sinful desires of the flesh, so that you will not follow, nor be led by them? I renounce them all; and, by God s help, will endeavor not to follow, nor be led by them. Do you believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth?
Do you believe in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead? Do you believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Catholic Church; the Communion of Saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting? Do you profess this faith? Will you endeavor to keep God s holy will and commandments, and to walk in the same all the days of your life? I will, God being my helper. The Bishop puts aside the pastoral Staff. With hand joined, he then addresses the congregation saying: Our help is in the Name of the Lord; Who hath made heaven and earth. Blessed be the Name of the Lord; Now and forever. Lord, hear our prayer. And let our cry come unto thee. Dearly beloved, by Holy Baptism, God our Father gave these his adopted sons and daughters new birth to eternal life. Let us therefore pray him to pour out upon them the Holy Spirit, to strengthen them in their faith, and to anoint them that they may be more like Christ the Son of God: that they may continue his forever, and daily increase in the Holy Spirit, more and more, until they come unto God s everlasting kingdom. All pray in silence. Then, with hands extended towards those to be confirmed, the Bishop says: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hast brought these thy servants to new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, freeing them from sin: send upon them, O Lord, the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete; give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and fortitude, the spirit of knowledge and piety; fill them with the spirit of the fear of the Lord. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Then shall each of the newly received go to the Bishop and kneel. The Sponsor places his right hand on the candidate s right shoulder. The Bishop lays his hand upon each as he signs him/her upon the forehead with the holy Chrism, saying: N., be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Then shall the Bishop say to each: Peace be with thee. And with thy spirit. After the anointing the Bishop washes his hands. Then the Bishop says: Defend, O Lord, these thy servants with thy heavenly grace, that they may continue thine for ever; and daily increase in thy Holy Spirit, more and more, until they come unto thy everlasting kingdom. All respond: Amen. The Bishop concludes the rite of Confirmation saying: Seeing now, dearly beloved brethren, that these thy servants are regenerate, and grafted into the body of Christ's Church, by Baptism and the Seal of the Holy Spirit, let us give thanks unto Almighty God for these benefits; and with one accord make our prayers unto him, that they may lead the rest of their lives according to this grace.
