The LOOK Have you ever been given the The Look? By that, I mean a look of disappointment by your parents, wife, husband, and maybe your colleague or employer. You did not meet expectations, failed at your promise, or you were told this would happen but you did not believe it or take it to heart. No words were spoken, but you got the message you got The Look. This happened to Peter! Dr. Luke records this event in Luke 22:54-65. It occurs after the Last Supper, the Betrayal, and Prayer on the Mount of Olives. Jesus is arrested and is taken to the High Priest s home. Peter follows at a distance and through a series of conversations denies the Lord three times I do not even know Him! The words below appear when he denies the Lord the third time: But Peter said, Man, I don t know what you are talking about. And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord s words flashed through Peter s mind. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me. And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly. Luke 22:60-62 NLT There it is The Look! Jesus saw Peter and Peter saw Jesus! Their eyes met. Many messages were communicated in that moment messages such as: Peter, I will always tell you the truth, - What I say will not change - you need to trust and believe what I am saying - Peter, I know the future - and so much more. I am desirous to unwrap these messages, but I need you to reflect on The Look in a threedimensional way: 1. His Look Jesus is looking at you! What does the Lord see when He looks at you? Nothing is hidden. He knows. He sees the invisible and visible. He sees the motives and understands why we do what we do! He looks at you - what does He see? Attitude and actions are open to His view. Nothing escapes His attention! 2. Your Look When you reflect on His words, understand His heart, what do you see? How do you feel? What do you want to do? Where do you want to go? Is there peace, comfort, and joy or do you feel estranged, uncomfortable, or even uninterested? Even a non-look is a look! 3. People looking at you! What do others see in you? What message are you sending? Your family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, business associates, and people at church what do they see when they look at you? Do they see courage, compassion, and understanding or do they see indifference, carelessness, and a lukewarm attitude regarding the things and plans of the Lord? The good news regarding this historical event in Luke 22 is that Peter was singled out to meet with Jesus after He rose from the dead. What a meeting!! He was recommissioned and set on fire. Just read the first few chapters of Acts and you can sense the difference. Your look at Him will affect all other views in this life views of people, circumstances, responsibilities, work, and living. Take a Good, Long, and Deep look at Jesus in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. That look will change your life! And remember, He is looking at You!

Referring to external and internal obstacles, challenges, road blocks, and barriers (brick walls) encountered every day on the job, the following are the words of a computer science professor, Randy Pausch, at Carnegie Mellon University who was dying of pancreatic cancer: The brick walls are there for a reason. They re not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. With much anticipation, President s Circle June 2018 www.trinitycollege.edu 5
