DOCTRINE & COVENANTS 19 WHEN March 1830 WHERE TITLE: WHEN THIS REVELATION WAS GIVEN: WHERE THIS REVELATION WAS GIVEN: WHAT WAS HAPPENING WHEN THIS REVELATION WAS GIVEN Manchester, New York WHY Joseph had hired a printing press to print 5,000 copies of the Book of Mormon. The cost would be $3,000 and Martin Harris signed his farm as collateral to guarantee payment to the press. There arose some threats that people would not buy the book so the printer ceased printing the book. Martin became concerned and asked Joseph to approach the Lord on the subject. This revleation followed. VERSES DOCTRINES AND PRINCIPLES TAUGHT WORDS LOOKED UP INSIGHTS, THOUGHTS, LESSONS LEARNED 1-3 4-7 8-9 10-12 13-15 16-17 Christ is the beginning and the end. He accomplished the will of the Father! All things are subdued unto Him. He has all power. Even to the destroying of Satan and his works! Everyone must repent or suffer. The Lord is end less - or there is no way around it. He will not revoke the judgments He shall pass. It is not written that the torment for those that suffer will not end. but rather it will be end less. The scriptures are clear and expressive to work upon our hearts. Understanding this doctrine is a mystery. It is not something known without revelation. It is important for us to know. Understanding this will help you enter into His rest. Christ is end less. The punishment given from his hand is end less. End less is his name. Wherefore: eternal punishment is God s and end less punishment is God s. Christ commands us to repent. If we don t repent we smitten by the rod of his mouth and we will suffer. The suffering will be sore. How sore, exquisite and hard to bear, we know not. Christ has already suffered for those sins so if they repent they will not have to suffer. However, if they don t repent they will have to suffer. Alpha & Omega: the first and last letters of the greek alphabet. Subdue: overcome or bring under control Revoke: to put the end to the operation of something. One definition of end less is joined at the ends. One eternal round. Exquisite: extreme or intense The Lord is letting them know exactly who He is and that He is in charge. Their fear over the threat of some townspeople is nothing compared to His power. Joseph and Martin are still growing in their testimonies, knowledge and faith. Years from now Joseph would probably not have worried over such a trivial thing as some threats of not purchasing the Book of Mormon compared to the work of the Restoration. The Lord is teaching about what will happen to those who refuse to repent. Repent or suffer are the options. End less in the scriptures does not necessarily mean without end, but eternal. All Christian religions teach of a hell, but Christ is explaining that this is a mystery. If the natural mind can figure it out it isn t a mystery. It must be revealed. Christ is explaining that he must reveal it, it can t be understood without revelation.. And it is necessary for the Apostles to understand this in order to fulfill their responsibility. Christ and God are end less and eternal. Therefore, end less or eternal punishment is their punishment. It doesn t mean that there will be no end to the punishment (vs.6) but rather it is THEIR punishment. Eternal is his name, so instead of saying eternal punishment you can say God s punishment This is a good example that shows that Christ s commandments are for our own happiness. He explains the consequences for not repenting, so He commands us to repent. Those who will not access the Atonement, will have to suffer for their own sins. This will be done during the millennium as they await their resurrection. This is not talking of Satan and his devils The constant in this verse is that Christ has already suffered and fulfilled the demands of the law. The variable is whether we will align ourselves with Him or whether we will refuse Him, therefore causing His suffering to be in vain and we will have to suffer still. 18-19 20 21-22 23-24 Doctrine & Covenants 19 41
Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not. DOCTRINE & COVENANTS 6:36 Look Unto Christ in Every Thought Words you looked up/ Definitions What this verse is teaching Why you think this scripture is a scripture mastery verse. Look: to direct one s attention Every: in every respect, completely Thought: consideration or ref lection We should keep Christ in the center of our thoughts. A spouse who is devoted to the other will always consider them in their thoughts and choices. As we make choices throughout the day we should look to Christ and everything He has taught us to make those choices and think about if that is what He would want for us. As we look to Him for guidance, we should not doubt or fear but exercise full faith as we walk forward. Because if we do this we can never stray and we will be ready to serve in whatever capacity the Lord woud have us. We will become who we are meant to become and be ready and open to receive revelation and be guided to who we can help. We wil continually increase our knowledge and capabilities. We won t just be righteous, we will be great servants. * We covenant to always remember Him What does this scripture mastery teach you about: JESUS CHRIST FAITH He wants us to look to Him and He will communicate with us as we do. Therefore, he must be alive and able and willing to hear us. He wants to be involved in every part of our lives. He knows that His ways will lead us to righteousness and happiness. He knows what we should do in every situation. Because He suffered all things and loves us pefectly He can be our guide. He understands that we have fears and doubts and assures us that we should not doubt or fear. We have many sources of information that can guide us. Books, websites, friends... We should exercise our faith in Christ as we move through life. And not just on Sunday, but every day with every thought. How much we do this can ref lect the kind of faith we have in Him. As our faith in Him grows, the more we will look to Him. If we have faith in other sources, then we may look to them more than we look to Him. REVELATION We should seek to be guided in every part and every aspect of our life. APPLICATION Brainstorm specific ways you can live the counsel in this scripture mastery. List your ideas here: Pray continually. Keep a prayer in our heart always. Pray for help to always remember Him Study the life of Christ so that we can know Him and His ways Study Christ s doctrine so we can know His words and they can guide us. Fill my home with reminders of Christ and His gospel Have daily scripture study so His doctrines are on my mind Keep a daily journal so I can review my day and how I lived my covenants Prepare myself each week for the Sacrament C onisder scenarios I may find myself in ahead of time and pray for guidance Search through General Conference talks and find a great quote that teaches about the doctrines and principles in this scripture mastery. Record that quote here. Looking unto the Lord in every thought is the only possible way we can be the kind of men and women we ought to be. The Lord asked the question of His disciples, What manner of men ought ye to be? He then answered His own question by saying, Even as I am. (3 Ne. 27:27.) To become as He is, we must have Him on our minds constantly in our thoughts. Every time we partake of the sacrament, we commit to always remember him. (Moro. 4:3; Moro. 5:2; D&C 20:77, 79.) If our thoughts make us what we are, and we are to be like Christ, then we must think Christlike thoughts.. President Ezra Taft Benson, Think On Christ, Ensign, March 1989 SCRIPTURE MASTERY: Doctrine & Covenants 6:36 25
DESCRIPTION SCRIPTURES THE GODHEAD DESCRIPTION, OVERVIEW, IMPORTANT DOCTRINES TO UNDERSTAND: The first article of faith states, We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy G host. These three beings make up the Godhead. They preside over this world and all other creations of our Father in Heaven. The true doctrine of the Godhead was lost in the apostasy that followed the Savior s mortal ministry and the deaths of His Apostles. This doctrine began to be restored when 14-year-old Joseph Smith received his First Vision Although the members of the Godhead are distinct beings with distinct roles, they are one in purpose and doctrine. They are perfectly united in bringing to pass Heavenly Father s divine plan of salvation. QUOTES, THOUGHTS, INSIGHTS Heavenly Father SCRIPTURE WHAT IS TAUGHT REFERENCE D&C 130:22 Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have bodies of f lesh and bone. The Holy G host is a spirit. Moses 1:39 Joseph, as a fourtheen year old boy learned that centuries of JSH 1:15-20 teachings were incorrect. He saw that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ were two separate beings. Jesus Christ Holy G host D&C 76:20-24 The members of the Godhead are alive. They dwell together. All three members of the Godhead are separate and have unique roles. Their purpose is one and they work together to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man (moses 1:39). And then are ye in this strait and narrow path which leads to eternal life; yea, ye have entered in by the gate; ye have done according to the commandments of the Father and 2 Nephi 31:18 the Son; and ye have received the Holy G host, which witnesses of the Father and the Son, unto the fulfilling of the promise which he hath made, that if ye entered in by the way ye should receive. The Mormon view of the members of the Godhead corresponds in a number of ways with the views of others in the Christian world, but with significant differences. Latter-day Saints pray to God the Father in the name of Jesus Christ. They acknowledge the Father as the ultimate object of their worship, the Son as Lord and Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit as the messenger and revealer of the Father and the Son. But where Latter-day Saints differ from other Christian religions is in their belief that God and Jesus Christ are glorified, physical beings and that each member of the Godhead is a separate being. And so, my beloved brethren and sisters, I believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy G host. I was baptized in the name of these three. I was married in the name of these three. I have no question concerning their reality and their individuality. That individuality was made apparent when Jesus was baptized by John in Jordan. There in the water stood the Son of God. His Father s voice was heard declaring His divine sonship, and the Holy G host was manifest in the form of a dove (see Matt. 3:16 17). I am aware that Jesus said that they who had seen Him had seen the Father (see John 14:9). C ould not the same be said by many a son who resembles his parent? Gordon B. Hinckley, Ensign, March 1998 160

DOCTRINE & COVENANTS 19 Manchester, NY WHAT WAS HAPPENING WHEN THIS REVELATION WAS GIVEN WHY March 1830 Christ Suffered So We Do Not Have To WHERE THIS REVELATION WAS GIVEN: WHERE WHEN THIS REVELATION WAS GIVEN: TITLE: Joseph had hired a printing press to print 5,000 copies of the Book of Mormon. There arose some threats that people would not buy the book so the printer ceased printing the book. Martin became concerned and asked Joseph to approach the Lord on the subject. This revelation followed. D&C 19:10-18 Christ and God are everlasting and eternal. Therefore, everlasting and eternal punishment means that it is Christ s and God s punishment. Not punishment that lasts forever. For those that are punished will be redeemed at the end of millennium. The term everlasting and eternal helps us understand that their ways are everlasting and eternal. We cannot hide or hope for change. They are telling us what the laws are, and those laws are everlasting and eternal. Christ & God live forever, lasting or existing forever their ways are eternal, their laws are eternal lasting or existing forever Christ & God live forever, their ways are endless, their laws are endless HELL Eternal punishment This is Heavenly Father & Christ s Endless punishment punishment. The P lan of Salvation is eternal and endless. Nothing will stop Period of time the wicked will it, replace it, or cause it to not come to suffer. They will be redeemed at pass. It is endless and eternal. And all the end of the millennium and inherit of the consequences and promises are the Terrestrial Kingdom (if they are endless and eternal. not Outer Darkness) But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I; which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and ETERNAL ENDLESS apirit... How these scriptures apply to my life / personal goals: Repent quickly! I will repent with all of my heart every day! I will not delay or procrastinate my repentance! My favorite scripture from this section: Why it is my favorite scripture: D&C 19:1 I love this introduction because of the reason the revelation was given. They were worried about the financial consequences of people threatening not to buy the Book of Mormon. The Lord answers by basically saying He is the beginning and the end - basically, why are they fearing a few men when the Redeemer of the World gave them specific instructions of what to do! I think we all do that sometimes. It would be good for us all to keep this perspective.

TITLE: SCRIPTURE D& C 1:37 D& C 1:38 Christ s words are TRUE and FAI THF UL SECTION: D& C 1 I love how this scripture tells us to search these commandments (the Doctrine & C ovenants) and then says, for they are true and faithful. True means accurate or exact. So, the revelations, or any scriptures, is accurate of exact. And the prophecies and promises which are in them shall all be fulfilled. The Lord knows the reality of these prophecies and He is telling us this. This reminds me of magnetic north and true north. Our compass points us north, but it isn t exact. True north is exact. If we know how to calculate, and then follow TRUE north, then we will always get exactly where we want to go, and we will never get lost. Just like the prophecies in these revelations. The Lord emphasizes this point by saying, and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled. One thing that we, as mortals, count on is the heavens and the earth. They are as constant and dependable as anything else in our lives. But those W ILL pass away. And even if you don t believe they will, they are more likely to than His words not coming to pass Teaching Idea: Show pictures of these three things: Mountains Sky Scriptures Ask: What do these three things have in common? Ask: In what ways do you depend upon these three things? Ask: Out of all of these things, which one is most likely to always be here? (Look up D&C 1:37-38 - read it and encourage them to let that sink Ask: Why do you think the Lord would use the heavens and the earth to make His point? Ask: What does this teach us about the need to REALLY KNOW the scriptures? Ask: Why would this be a really great scripture to read with your family just before General C onference?
