KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MEMBERSHIP DRIVE OCTOBER 5TH & 6TH The Knights of Columbus Msgr. Basche Council 4505 at Cathedral is holding a membership drive. Current members have collectively achieved an impressive list of charitable projects that would be pleasing to our founder, Fr. Michael McGivney. As a member of our council, you will strengthen your faith and become a better Catholic, husband, and/or father. In addition you will form friendships with fellow Knights that will last a lifetime. Completed Cathedral Projects The K of C have completed many projects here at Cathedral There is more to be done in the future, if you have carpenter, plumbing, electrical skills, or typical home maintenance skills, why not volunteer your services to help beautify and refresh some of the parish buildings? Relevant Radio invites you to join in the Ember Days devotion over the next 12 months "to fast and pray for healing of the victims and purification of the Church in light of the scandal of sex abuse." Rev. Francis J. Hoffman, Father Rocky, Executive Director at Relevant Radio, has asked all Relevant Radio associates and board members to consider making acts of prayer and penance on each Ember Day. "The entire Relevant Radio family is invited to fast, abstain from meat, and make a Holy Hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament on the Ember Days, which coincide with the changing of the seasons," said Father Rocky. BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY St. Francis Xavier Cathedral has a Bereavement Ministry program available to provide support and comfort to parishioners who are grieving the death of a loved one. On October 7th, Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, the United States through Rosary Coast to Coast will join with our International brothers and sisters to pray for our respective nations. GOSPEL MEDITATION "Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." This verse is part of a beautiful reflection on childlike faith. We're reminded of the innocence of children, how eager they are to experience life and how quick they are to trust. Rarely do we hear it with the story that immediately proceeds it. The Pharisees question Jesus on the lawfulness of divorce! Hardly the sort of thorny moral conversation one typically has in front of children. Yet here we are. Jesus' response goes further back then the Mosaic law. "From the beginning, God made them male and female... the two shall become one flesh... what God has joined together, no human being must separate." Jesus cites a particular set of passages from Genesis 1 and 2, before the Fall in Genesis 3. Adam and Eve possessed original innocence. How eager they were to encounter one another and to explore the garden! How immediate their initial trust in God. We no longer live in Eden. As we age in our fallen world, our childlike trust is wounded and betrayed. We become hardened to the beauties of life. We're quick to find a way around difficult moments. In brief, things become complicated as we lose our innocence. The teachings of Christ and the Church on sexuality become more challenging or more objectionable. Jesus recognizes this in today's Gospel. His invitation is not to compromise with our broken reality. It is a return to beauty, to the fullness of life as it was meant to be. We can affirm our trust in God. We can view life with gratitude. We can experience healing of our lost innocence. This is possible today -- now! -- by grace. Indeed, "the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." ANNUAL PARISH MEETING St. Francis Xavier Cathedral will hold it's Annual Parish Meeting On Tuesday, October 16th at 6 pm in the BWC. Please pick up a copy of the Annual Report for preview. Reports can be found at the Greeters desk. Bring your copy with you to the meeting. HELP NEEDED! We need your help cleaning the Sanctuary on the first Tuesday of every month. (approximately 1 hour commitment). We are also looking for Greeters to cover Fridays noon - 2 pm and 2-4 pm.
