Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES November 16-22, 2013 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 73 THE MULTIFACETED GENIUS S. BALACHANDAR One of the stormy petrels of the South Indian art world, a brilliant person with his share of delightful eccentricities, he was an actor, screenwriter, film producer, music composer, innovative celluloid creator and above all an acknowledged genius of classical Carnatic music. During a certain period of his life, he was active in Tamil Cinema, playing roles of different kinds and also making movies, many of which attracted wide attention. Much influenced by Hollywood cinema, the films he directed had a touch of the west in the story content and music. Even though he was a conservative classical Carnatic musician, he invested his film music with different schools of Western music like jazz and Latin American melodies and rhythms and such. That was a period when such genres of music were a novelty in Tamil cinema. Such a multifaceted personality was S. Balachander (1927-1990). Of the many films in which he was associated with as actor or director, mention should be made of Rishya Shringar (1941), Ithu Nijama? (1948), Kaithi (1951, also directed by him), Rajambal (1951), Antha Naal (1954, story and direction), Avana Ivan? (1962), Bommai (1964), and Nadu Iravil (1970). Of all these films, Antha Naal came to be hailed as a classic of South Indian cinema, being the first movie to be produced in the part of the country without the usual and obligatory routine song-and-dancesequences. Sundaram Balachander was the son of the Mylapore lawyerv. Sundaram Iyer, and, as a young boy, he went along with his father, handsome brother Rajam and sister Jayalakshmi to Kolhapur from Madras to act in the Prabhat Pictures Tamil film Seetha Kalyanam (1933). Even as a mere lad, Chandru, as he was called by his family and friends, revealed his genius and interest in music. While his brother and sisters learned music under the legendary musician and composer Papanasam Sivan, the lad hung around in the family house in Mylapore, absorbing the music by mental osmosis. He also revealed a flair to play on musical instruments, which would help him in large measure later when he became a film music composer. Impressed immensely by his genius, the producers cast him in Seetha Kalyanam as a musician in the court of the mighty King Ravana to play the percussion instrument kanjeera. He astonished everybody present on the set with his amazing proficiency in playing the instrumentwhich is held by the lefthandand rhythms played with the right-hand! During the shooting of the scenes he proved more than a problem to the director Baburao Prebendary. While playing on the kanjeera he would be lost in his own world and would wander all over the set and in and out of the film frame, and sometimes marching and swaying, making faces, right up to the camera! Exasperated to the brim, the director drew a circle with a chalk and ordered the boy not to move out of it warning him that, if he did, he would not get any food and other goodies like chunks of creamy ice cream! During the making of the movie at Kolhapur, Chandru did not have many scenes but he did not waste the spare hours. He evinced great interest in the many musical instruments used in the orchestra and worked hard to learn them. Thus, he learnt to play with ease and efficiency the sitar. Later Rajam and Chandru toured many parts of northern India with Rajam giving vocal concerts and Chandru accompanying him on the sitar. While performing at Karachi (then part of India and now in Pakistan) the audience was so impressed with the young lad s mastery over the sitar that the patrons who organised the concert presented him a silver sitar. (To be continued) Nursery students receive comic books on Indian culture Members of Sri Aravindha Bharathi (an organization conducting and promoting Indian culture and tradition) distributed free comic books based on Indian culture and tradition to the students of Sister Subbu- lakshmi Nursery and Primary School (Guild Street, T. Nagar) on November 14. The members spent the day with the students and entertained them with a variety of programs. Finally the much awaited trial run of a test Metro Rail train were inaugurated by Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha in Koyambedu depot on Nov. 6. An official of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) told reporters that an 800-meter test track has been specially created for this purpose. The average speed of the Trial runs of Metro Rail Councillor offers free freezer box service service for keeping bodies of deceased to his ward s residents since 2011. He also provides for free pickup and drop of the freezers. He said that even though he started the scheme exclusively for his ward members, following demand, he has extended the service to nearby areas Two Corporation teachers arrested for getting jobs with fake certificates Central Crime Branch on Monday arrested two teachers of Corporation Higher Secondary School (MGR Nagar) on charges of submitting fake Teachers Training Course (TTC) certificates to get jobs in 1998. According to the police, Kuppan and Raja had obtained the fake certificates from a broker named Krishnakumar of Tiruttani by paying him Rs. 15,000. Though their Std. 10 and Std. 12 marks sheets were found to be original, the TTC certificates they had produced were later found to be fake. Ravichandran said that he had received a petition alleging that 59 teachers working in Chennai Corporation schools had produced fake certificates to get jobs. A. SADANAND SEVEN NEW JUDGES It rains judges in the Madras High Court. Though the monsoon has played spoilsport so far, the judicial pool will be full if the selectors can land on some more material worthy of the throne in the near future. The egress is more than the ingress because the Supreme court grabs our judges and vacancy is a perennial problemin this great court making it plead like friend Oliver Twist, Please sir, I want some more. Last week the appointing authority said, Here take, as a first instalment, seven of the best. Maybe we can persuade some of the unjustly sacked law officers of your court through the machinations of criminal minds, to accept judgeship which was their right, if honesty and truth have any meaning in the temple of justice Well, I don t think it has reference to me because I am pursuing the Bar Council bonanza of 5.25 lakh rupees to old bandicoots who have called it a day in the profession. All I got from the profession was a sack as Government Pleader during Amma s first innings, as a fancied legal officer who worked part time as peon stole her signature on a sack order. Justice is, to quote Shashi Tharoor, a cattle cart and, a few years later, he got his just desserts. Justice P. N. Prakash, the newly appointed judge, the tallest among the group, shared 103, Law Chambers with his senior K. M. Srirangan and me among other juniors of the great G. Ramaswami who rose to the Supreme Court as Attorney General. I hope the Supreme Court will work up an appetite for Justice Prakash in god time. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Minibus route via Madley subyway would help commuters in West Mambalm Sir, Apropos to the letter in Mambalam Times last week by T. N. Balasubramanian, I would like to add some more points. MTC buses do not ply through Madley Subway as it is a little narrower than Duraisamy Subway on the north and Aranganathan Subway on the south. If minibuses which have recently been introduced in different parts of city are also introduced through the route of Madley Subway, it will benefit a number of commuters in West Mambalam and Postal Colony areas. The route can be set through Udayam Theatre, Govindan Road, Kittu Park, Easwaran Koil Street, Madley Subway to reach Egmore/Guindy. There are no share autos in this area as well. Presently autos are the only means of commuting and many of the auto drivers fleece the customers. I appeal to the MTC officials to start minibus service for the above mentioned route. V.
