THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH NOVEMBER 11, 2018 STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY BECOMING AWARE What you have as heritage, now take as task. ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Faust Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. ~Psalm 127:1 THE WORSHIP OF GOD RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL PRELUDE Excerpt from Chaconne from Partita No. 2 J.S. Bach (transcribed for solo flute) Syrinx for solo Flute Claude Debussy INTROIT INVOCATION Stephanie Ford * CALL TO WORSHIP This liturgy is inspired by Matthew 22:34-40, Mark 12:28, Luke 10:25. One: Once upon a time a wise one offered a challenge; What is the greatest commandment? The calendars on our desks share a vision of greatness; bills to pay, phone calls to return, appointments to keep. Many: Love the Lord your God.

One: The cameras of our memories share what commands us; children to bathe and partners to help parents calling and grandchildren hopeful. Many: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. One: Still the Spirit lures us to new priorities; open spaces to experience wonder, strangers becoming friends, devotion to that which transcends. Many: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. Love your neighbor as yourself. written by Katherine Hawker * PROCESSIONAL HYMN God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending 606 * PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST One: The Peace of Christ be with you. Many: And also with you. Stephanie Ford OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH, SERVICE, & FELLOWSHIP Complete the requested information and then pass it back down the row. Thank you for worshipping with us at Binkley! THE WORD OF GOD & OUR RESPONSE PRAYER OF CONFESSION This prayer is inspired by the story of the widow s mite in March 12:41-44 and Luke 21:1-4. Lord God, We ask that by your holy light you illuminate the instances in our lives where we have not lived up to your name. We denounce obvious evils in our society such as murder, rape, domestic violence, thievery, and sexual exploitation. However, we often fail to remember that your gospel calls us to see the world as you see it from the vantage point of the least of these. In looking around us in this manner, we see the daily evils that boldly counter to your gospel. We see the societal ills that habitually oppress the poor.

We see the societal ills that blatantly disobey your Word. We confess that we have not been extravagantly generous with our time, resources, or prayers. Lord, forgive us. Forgive us for not speaking against immoral budgets that exploit our brothers and sisters. Forgive us for ignoring the light of those unable to afford health care because of rising costs. Forgive us for denying the tremendous damage that racism, sexism, and patriarchy do to our society. Forgive us for remaining silent on issues of immigration, the death penalty, and the need for a living wage. Convict us to act in the name of Jesus Christ for justice and mercy, just as you have shown toward all. Remind us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Forgive us, dear Lord, for our daily hypocrisy. Cleanse our souls and our bodies with your saving grace. Amen. written by Jason R. It s also Binkley s 60 th anniversary where we are honoring our past and building our future. There are many ways we as a congregation have sown the seeds of God s love, worked by giving of our time, finances and energy to produce successful crops. Hopefully this year s stewardship theme of Planting, Cultivating & Harvesting will allow us a time to count our blessings, reflect on the past, envision Binkley s future and consider ways we can support our goals throughout the coming year. During our traditional Walk of Faith, you will be given the opportunity during the worship service to bring your 2019 pledge card forward to the Communion Table. Join us in planting, cultivating and harvesting with faithful generosity and a grateful heart. This is an act of worship meant to be participated in willingly and joyfully. If you do not feel led to give, are unable to give, or are a visitor to our congregation, please know that you are not compelled to participate in this ritual.
