November 11, 2018 Oak Grove Lay Visitation Teams LAITY SUNDAY Both the Outreach Circle and Lay Ministry help to care for our church community by offering spiritual support through conversation, prayer, and encouragement. The Outreach Circle of the United Methodist Women was formed with the purpose of visiting Oak Grove s homebound members. Outreach Circle visits provide friendship and conversation and remind people who can no longer come to church that they are not forgotten. Our Lay Ministers assist the pastors with visits in hospitals, care facilities, and homes. Lay Ministers receive special training to help them walk with others through illness, grief, and other life circumstances. Lay Ministers also help with visiting our homebound members. The Homebound Communion Team shares Holy Communion with people in our congregation who are not able to come to worship. We are grateful for the 49 people who help with visits and calls. We have over 80 people currently on our visitation list, and our Lay Ministers and Outreach Circle members make sure these friends know that they are loved by God and Oak Grove! Our volunteers find great meaning in the work they do. Below a few people from our Outreach Circle and Lay Ministry share why they enjoy serving: "The unique mission of the Outreach Circle spoke to my heart. Through the years I have cherished the opportunities I have had to visit and get to know so many wonderful families. Being an integral part of this caring Circle of women who share this mission has been a true blessing in my life." - Anne Patterson "When I visit for Oak Grove, I always have in mind memories of my father going to see people who might be alone, deeply sad, or very ill. He was kind and jovial and conveyed friendship in his large hands. In my own visits, then, I honor my father." - John Ballard "Lay Ministry is one of many ways that we care for each other at Oak Grove. I enjoy helping people and being with them, listening to their stories, and walking with them on their journey of life. The special training allows us to learn how to help others during life s most difficult times." - Jenny Ginn "Lay Ministry allows me to serve as an extension of God s presence in our community. I see the faces of God s children and am privileged to serve members of Oak Grove by keeping them connected to the church we all love." - John Weatherford Our Senior Pastor also shared about his gratitude for the work of these teams: "One role of the Church of Jesus Christ is to nurture and care for people who are sick, grieving, or otherwise in need of prayer. The role of clergy and staff is to train and empower laity to share in this ministry of the church. Oak Grove s Lay Visitors provide excellent, loving, spiritual support to people in times of need. Often at a funeral, a member of the family will call me aside to express deep gratitude for frequent contact from Oak Grove s Lay Visitors. The care Oak Grove offers would not be possible without a large dedicated team of lay people visiting people in the name of Jesus Christ." Glenn Ethridge, Senior Pastor
