Page Three St. Francis of Assisi Parish February 11, 2018 Lent 2018 Springtime for the Soul The word Lent comes from Anglo Saxon times which means spring. When we think of spring, images emerge, such as, tulips, daffodils, warmer temperatures, and the days are getting longer! I know many can t wait for these days of spring to arrive. February 14th is not only Valentine s Day, but it is also Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season. So on this day we have an interesting contrast of the heart and ashes, a day to celebrate love and to renew our love in Jesus Christ and with one another. Our schedule for Ash Wednesday is as follows: 8:00 A.M. Mass 12:00 A.M. Mass 5:30 P.M. Simple Soup Dinner 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service with members of Ogden Methodist Year of the Family In our diocese we are celebrating the year of the family, and so here in our parish we are going to focus on the family through the Lenten season. Marriage and family life today face enormous challenges. We recognize that these difficulties can bring great pain, but families too offer great hope and can nurture powerful love. Beginning on Wednesday, February 21st and every Wednesday up until March 21st, we will be having guest speakers haring on specific aspects of family life. We will be doing this in the context of liturgy in the church at 7:00P.M. We will celebrate family love and pray for family healing and reconciliation. February 21 The Spiritual Life of the Family (Tom and Molly Kane) February 28 Reconciliation in Family Relationships (Kathy Colligan) March 7 Family Life and the Pain of Separation and Divorce (Andy and Kathleen O Connor) March 14 Family Life and the Struggle with Addiction (Caitlyn Garey) March 21 Family Life and Economic Challenges (Hope Matthews) Lent is a time to put our faith-in-action In order to put faith-in-action, we will engage in the Catholic Relief Service (CRS) Rice Bowl. It offers opportunities for your family to engage daily in the spiritual pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. And, it s an opportunity for us as a parish to come together as a community and reflect on what it means to live out our Gospel call to go out and encounter those most in need. Please take home a CRS Rice Bowl, located in the back of the church, home with you. Lent is a time to engage in prayer Why not build into your schedule to attend Mass in our Chapel at 8AM? A great way to start your day! In our social media culture today there are numerous sites that we can use for our personal prayer and meditation. Let me suggest two for you to use. 1.) Best Lent Ever is a free email program that will guide you on an incredible 40 day journey to become the best version of yourself, making this a truly life-changing Lent. How does it work? Just sign-up at BestLentEver.com/ParishSignUp. Starting Ash Wednesday, you will receive daily emails with short inspirational videos, practical tips to incorporate into your everyday lives, and encouraging stories from Dynamic Catholic team members. 2.) Sacred Space is a website (sacredspace.ie) that provides daily prayers. It might seem strange to pray at your computer, in front of a screen or using your smartphone, especially if there are other people around you, or distracting noises. But God is everywhere, all around us, constantly reaching out to us, even in the most unlikely situations. When we know this, and with a bit of practice, we can pray anywhere! So, let us spring into action this Lenten season to experience a newer, deeper, and fuller life in Christ! February: Fundraising for our food pantry Why do we have a pantry? Many families are living on the edge and a drop in food stamps (SNAP), high heating bills, loss of a job or illness can push families over the edge, thereby creating a need for assistance. Our pantry and the other 30+ pantries in our county catch them and relieve some of their stress. What you spend for lunch may be what a family has for the entire day. Below is an example of what some families have to deal with. NOT EVERYONE HAS A SAFETY NET OR SAVINGS ACCOUNT. Your name is Jeff Moore. You have been working at the QuickieMart for 2 years now. You live in Sunville. You have been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, and there are times when you simply cannot get yourself to work. Your boss has been very good to you, but the job only pays $9.70 an hour, and you are working 25 hours a week. This $970 per month has just barely gotten you by so far. Your apartment is $525 per month and your utilities are about $185. You walk to work, but the nearest grocery store is 15 miles, and sometime you can t make it on foot. You figure that you spend about $85 per month on bus fare. You would like to buy a bike, but cannot right now, because the medicines that you need to help you get through each day cost about $160 per month. You have no family in the area. Disclaimer: This is a sample and does not reflect a specific family living in Broome County.

Phalen Distribution February 20 th D. Kellett & Team #1 Thank you from Elizabeth Church Manor Once again, what a wonderful job you did organizing the gift-giving project for Elizabeth Church Manor residents this year! I wish you could have seen the beautiful sight when the gifts were displayed under the trees in the dining rooms. It brought back memories of Christmas magic from the past. As each gift was opened, the residents were so amazed at how well Santa Claus knew just what everyone wanted or needed, right down to the right size and shape! Collection for Homeless Coalition Faith Formation will be collecting items for the Homeless Coalition again from now until April 15th. These are the needed items: Bottles of Water or Gatorade Insulated Socks Thermal Underwear (L/XL) Warm Gloves/Hats Hand/Feet Warmers Ponchos Toothbrushes Wipes Fast Food Gift Cards Clif Bars Cracker Sandwiches Raisins (or other dried fruit) Ziploc Bags Drawstring Bags Bicycle Cable Locks * All clothing must be new and must be men's sizes There is a box just inside the front door of the school on Sundays during Faith Formation. Another box is be at the church and another at the Parish Center. Notice there is a new item on the list (cable lock). A big problem for the homeless is theft of their meager possessions when they go to an appointment or to a shelter for a night. Having a cable lock would allow them to secure some of their items to a stationary object, making it harder for them to be stolen. What we are looking for are called bicycle cable locks. Knights of Columbus Breakfast Buffet The Knights of Columbus will be having a Breakfast Buffet on Sunday, February 25th from 8:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m. in the Church Hall. Please come and join us for a truly wonderful breakfast! Proceeds to benefit Catherine's Cupboard February Fundraiser. An appropriate gesture for those who are concerned about spreading the flu virus might be to bow gently or nod to those around you, and with a smile say Peace be with you, or Peace of Christ. Receiving Holy Communion: Roman Catholics believe that both the Body and the Blood of Christ are contained in the Holy Eucharist under the form of the consecrated host. But the Church encourages reception of the cup at Mass as a fuller expression of the Last Supper and Christ s precious blood poured out for us in sacrifice. If you are feeling sick, please receive Holy Communion in the hand, rather than on the tongue, and refrain from receiving communion from the cup. Thank You!
