14th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are hard of face and obstinate of heart (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that [he] was amazed at their lack of faith (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week s Treasure mentioned the Nuns of the Battlefield, religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the Nuns of the Battlefield stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. The objectives are to assess the needs of the whole parish and its members, and to develop and implement a pastoral plan which will promote the common good of the parish. Also to foster unity and a sense of community in the parish and to coordinate all parish activities in a manner that will best serve the interests of the parish. Interested? 5:00 p.m. 8:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. Ministry Schedule for July 14/15 Eucharistic Ministers Louise Claybar Andy Sonnier Elisa Sonnier Charles Trahan Mary McDuffie Irene Pachuca Mary Henson Mary Montgomery Elizabeth Smith Linda Wade Lectors Kent Crow Mark Frey Spanish Lectors Norma Franklin Marsha Marshall Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Altar Servers Zoe Henning Kiera Howington Cameron Bilbo Logan Russell Audrey Bonnette Lauren Corrao Jacob Scheiderer Because of the complexities introduced by my homily on the weekend of June 24, 2018, I want to follow it up with the specific references that I used so that you can continue your reflection. My first reference was to the 1952 Apostolic Constitution Exul Familia, and I quoted the very first paragraph in the introduction. My second reference is found later in Exul Familia, when Pope Pius XII recalls a visit from US Senators. My third reference was to the Pastoral Constitution in the Modern World, paragraph #27. My fourth reference was to Blessed Pope Paul VI s encyclical Populorum Progressio paragraphs #67 & #69. My fifth reference was from St. Pope John Paul II s The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph #2241. Finally, my last reference was to the homily of Pope Francis at the Arena Sport Camp in the Salina Quarter, in Lampedusa on July 8, 2013. It is in the 6th paragraph. In addition to the above references, one can also reflect on the visitation of Abram and Sarah in the Book of Genesis, and also Jesus judgment in Matthew 25. As Bishop Guillory has asked, let us intently pray for our civil leaders so that immigration reform that conforms to our Catholic Social Justice Teachings will come to pass. Blessings, Fr.
