As born-again believers, we recognize that we come from families and communities of various backgrounds, moral concerns, and social norms. When we agree to voluntarily become missionaries of the North American Mission Board, we join a community of like-minded individuals who are devoted to serving Christ and working to fulfill the Great Commission. As members of the North American Mission Board community, each one of us is responsible for our behavior, and for the well-being of others with whom we serve and those whom we serve. Part of being a responsible and caring member of the North American Mission Board community is to recognize that we are joining a community that is under the authority of the Southern Baptist Convention and the Trustees of the North American Mission Board and, as such, has specific requirements for service. Among them is an expectation about personal ethics beyond reproach. The Policy and Guidelines statement below reflects the Southern Baptist Convention and North American Mission Board s long-standing support of abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, the use of illegal drugs, marijuana or abuse of other controlled substances as a faithful witness to God s liberating and redeeming love for persons.
