All Saints October 31/November 1, 2018 Scripture #1209 Saint Paul called the recipients of his letters saints, as they were called by God to be set apart in the world. So there can be no better gospel reading on a day that celebrates all the saints than the Beatitudes of Matthew, a self-portrait of Jesus. Jesus was a model for what discipleship should look like, as a disciple follows Jesus. For us, living the Beatitudes, the self-portrait of Jesus is a tall order. But in doing we will find ourselves to be the saints we are called to be. Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time November 3/4, 2018 Scripture #1183 One of those learned in the law came to Jesus with a deceptively simple question. Which is the first of all the commandments? Jesus answer cleverly combines two commandments (Deut 6:4; Lev 19:18): There is no other commandment greater than these. There is nothing to critique. Jesus so embodies the law that no one else has the courage to ask him any questions. But how is the Christian life summed up? Jesus words are meant for us too. If only we love God and love our neighbor as ourselves. Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 10/11, 2018 Scripture #1186 8:30 am Veteran s Day Mass In light of today s gospel of the widow s gift, what kind of givers are we? Do we give of ourselves or from our excess? Jesus message is to give everything we have, without holding anything back. It s too easy to game the system, to make a show out of giving. Jesus speaks of something more profound. Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 17/18, 2018 Scripture #1189 Harvest Mass Each age has its share of true believers who maintain that the world is doomed, but Jesus says, But of that day or hour, no one knows, / neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Rather than worry about when the world will end, it might be more productive to wonder about when the world will end, it might be more productive to wonder about my own personal end. Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 24/25, 2018 Scripture #1192 The scene is between Jesus and Pilate. Jesus claims he is a king. Pilate, vested with the power to execute, debates the meaning of truth. He doesn t see the incarnation of truth, the King of Kings, standing before him. In Pilate s blindness, he will put him to death as King of the Jews. What Pilate said in mockery was utterly true. As Jesus underwent death before his exaltation, so must we. Our own path to glory, exaltation, and ultimate resurrection comes through a dying to self. -Living Liturgy, 2018 Gathering: Crown Him With Many Crowns #574 Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 24 We Long to See Your Face (Refrain II) #37 Gift Preparation: Come to the Banquet #931 Communion: All Glory, Laud, and Honor #498 Sending Forth: To Jesus Christ, Our Sovereign King #573
