Time flies by so quickly! October is around the corner as September slips away. On Monday, October 1, OLG School will welcome the new month with the Mass of Our Lady of the Rosary. Please join us at 11:30 on that day if you can. October is traditionally the month of the rosary and the Feast of the Queen of the Holy Rosary is the Sisters feastday because our official title is the Dominican Sisters of the Queen of the Holy Rosary. In the past the rosary was very much a tradition for most Catholic families. In my family, during October and May, we knelt together and prayed the rosary almost every day. As a child, I would tie my rosary up so that I could spend the praying time untying it, because I found the recitation boring. As a child, if I awoke in the middle of the night with a bad dream, I would grab the rosary under my pillow and finger the beads as I repeated the Hail Mary over and over. It always calmed me down and allowed me to drift off to sleep. As an adult, I ve grown to appreciate the rosary as a means of meditation and as a support from our Blessed Mother. Tradition tells us that Mary first shared the Rosary devotion with St. Dominic in the 12 th century. As the story goes, Dominic was not having much success in his work, preaching among the people. One day when he was very tired, he complained in prayer to our Blessed Mother. She told him that if he wants to reach the people and win them over to God, he needed to preach her prayer, the Rosary. She also promised that if he spread devotion to the rosary, his religious order would flourish. Today, Dominicans, both men and women, can be found all over the world! I would like to invite all of us to recite the rosary once a week or say a decade of the rosary daily during the month of October. The rosary is a powerful tool for focusing our energies so that God s love and peace can flow through each of us. The first Family Event is on Friday! Please join us under the awning for pizza and then in the classroom for either Coco or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the original! See the attached flyer in this bulletin. May our Blessed Mother fill each of you and your loved ones with her Peace and Joy! In God s Peace, S. Janice Therese, O.P.

** SAFE ENVIRONTMENT COURSE & FINGERPRINTING ** A reminder to all school parents: In order to be able to volunteer at any school event (e.g. your child s birthday party, the Harvest Festival) when children are present you must complete a safe environment course, entitled Protecting God s Children for Adults. This is a free course that can be completed online by logging onto oakdiocese.org/offices/safe environment (if you completed this course last year when it was introduced, you do not need to take it again for another 2 years). Before clicking on the blue button to register on VIRTUS, please read the instructions below the blue button. If you prefer to take the course in person, there are two sessions being offered in the month of October: Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7 pm in Spanish and Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 7pm in English. Both sessions will be held at the Parish Hall. In addition, all adult volunteers are required to be fingerprinted for the Oakland diocese. This only needs to be done once during all the years your child attends OLG. The cost is $34 and you will receive 2 service hours per person once you have paid. The required form and additional details are available at the school office for getting the fingerprinting completed. Call 510-657-1674 for more information. Frontage road field- - If anyone would like to rake the piles of mulch on the field along our frontage road please feel free to do so. -We also need the pile of bricks that were deposited in the field area by the basketball courts to be moved to our garden area. Please contact the school if you are interested in helping out. New Service Hour Reporting: Effective today, service hour reporting has changed. From now on the only method for reporting service hours is online at the service hour link located on the school website under the Parent tab. The service hour form is a Google doc. If you do not have a Gmail (Google) account when you try to open the doc, you will receive a message to request access. Please identify yourself in the request when replying to the message. Since OLG School is now utilizing G Suite products (Google Doc, Sheets, etc.), we encourage families who don t already have a Gmail account to create one for free. This will allow easy access to the Google docs we will be sharing. Only report one activity per line in the doc. The school will no longer be reporting hours for parents, which we hope will avoid reporting duplications. From now on please do not send emails to the school to report service hours. Please report your own hours for attending mandatory meetings, chairing meetings, helping with hot lunch, etc.
