OUR CHURCH OUR LEGACY A CAMPAIGN FOR THE DIOCESE OF THE ARMENIAN CHURCH OF AMERICA (EASTERN)

WE GIVE THANKS, for all of your blessings, and for the privilege of worshipping you in your holy Armenian Church. Strengthen the enduring spiritual traditions of our people, Lord: for our sacrifices throughout history bear witness to the truth of your Holy Gospel. INSPIRE US to carry forward the legacy of the Holy Martyrs, in our parishes, our community, and within our families, and among our fellow citizens in the larger society. BLESS OUR CHURCH our leaders, clergy, and all of the faithful; guide us all to live your Holy Gospel and its sacred virtues of faith, hope, and selfless love. FILL US WITH A SPIRIT OF GENEROSITY so we may undertake the task of strengthening our Diocese and parishes. Help our ministries touch every heart, and open the door to a deeper relationship with you. MAKE US YOUR GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANTS worthy to praise you with the Father and the Holy Spirit now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen

OUR CHURCH OUR LEGACY Our local parishes and faithful are the direct focus of Our Church, Our Legacy campaign. Success in the campaign will allow the Diocese to strengthen and support our communities with new tools and creative resources with pastoral and managerial guidance to strengthen the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ through the Armenian Church in America.

Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church THE ARMENIAN CHURCH IS A PRECIOUS THREAD weaving through our lives uniting us with the experiences of our parents before us, and our children after us. During the most meaningful moments of life, the church is there to share your joy, console your sorrow, unite you with God s greater purposes. This is the great legacy we have inherited from our ancestors most notably from that heroic generation that braved the 1915 Genocide; whose survivors went forth to build new lives in the New World. Wherever they gathered across this country, the first task of the fledgling Armenian-American communities was to build a house of prayer and worship, where the great spiritual heritage of our people could be renewed. The observance of the Armenian Genocide Centennial in 2015 brought to light, as never before, the depth of gratitude we all feel to that generation. At the same time, it showed how far our people have come, and how our story of martyrdom, survival, and achievement is increasingly relevant in the world. We today take it for granted that the church of our ancestors will always be there when we need it. But without the loving support of its members, the church cannot persist in its vital mission with strength and conviction. This endowment campaign is one way to ensure the security of our Diocese and to ensure that its unique mission will remain active and strong for future generations. The campaign seeks to build on the strengths we saw in 2015: to solidify our community s interest, good will and solidarity, but also to advance forward, to actively bring the riches of our Armenian Christian identity to all segments of our community especially to our youth. His Eminence Archbishop Khajag Barsamian is the Primate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America The Diocese needs your help. So please consider making a generous contribution to the endowment campaign. We deeply appreciate your stewardship of our church. Our parishes and our children and grandchildren will be the ultimate beneficiaries of your foresight and commitment.

SUPPORTING OUR CHURCH, supporting our Diocese, is something we grew up doing automatically. We watched our parents volunteer their time to help build a spiritual home for their families transforming fragile mission parishes into vital churches. They led by example, and we followed. Only later did we begin to appreciate the hidden treasure we had inherited in the Armenian Church. Love for Jesus Christ dwells deep within the Armenian soul. Our people embraced the faith of Christ s first Apostles. They placed that faith at the core of our identity in the time of St. Gregory the Enlightener. Their faith was tested through the centuries most painfully during the Genocide of 1915. But against all odds, their faith prevailed. When Armenian immigrants planted their church in the soil of a free America, it was a symbol of their courageous faith in Christ. Our mission is to continue building the faith in Jesus Christ that Armenians uniquely possess. As co-chairs, we are committed to helping parishes make our church more relevant to our follower s everyday lives here in the United States. Our priority is to invest in the professional development of our clergy, expand ministries and outreach, and develop our future lay leaders. That s why we enthusiastically agreed to serve as co-chairs for this Endowment Campaign. We ve made personal financial contributions to it, and we re reaching out to like-minded people to do the same. Melanie Dadourian and Oscar Tatosian are the co-chairs of the Our Church, Our Legacy endowment campaign The key to success is collaboration between the Diocese and its parishes. To strengthen our network, we are asking for your comments and questions, your praise as well as your concerns. Honest give-and-take allows us to hear what people want from their church and guides the Diocese s response to your wishes. Our Diocese wants you to be an active part of a vital, living church every day of the year. It is committed to seriously engaging Armenian Christians in the 21st century, and to providing the tools for spiritually healthy individuals, families, and communities. We re counting on our faithful church members to lend generous support to the Diocese s mission. Won t you please join us in this meaningful effort?

I HAVE MY OWN PLANS FOR YOU, says the Lord. Plans for your welfare, and not for your harm; plans to give you a future with hope. When you call upon me in prayer, I will hear you. When you search for me, I will be there. If you seek me with all your heart, I will let you find me. JEREMIAH, CHAPTER 29

Your Gift UPHOLDS THE LEGACY of our Armenian Christian Ancestors. It ensures that the Armenian Church they loved will ALWAYS STAND TALL in America

into the rugged Armenian highlands bearing an extraordinary message. Two apostles: servants of a Master who had taught them about love and sacrifice; who had shown them a new hope for eternal life. This good news was the message they carried: a precious seed of faith which would take root in the ferment of the Armenian people. It happened nearly 2,000 years ago! The legacy of Saints Thaddeus and Bartholomew still guides us today. And the Eastern Diocese will always do its humble part to keep that profound spiritual legacy alive in the hearts of the Armenian faithful.

to light a path through unimaginable darkness. They sacrificed whatever they could to build, and rebuild, their communities. On a distant American shore they recreated the spiritual home of their people. They taught their children the sacred sharagans and prayers, so that our Lord would always hear His name praised in the Armenian tongue. Today, thanks to your support of the Our Church, Our Legacy campaign, the Eastern Diocese can advance its historic mission, and fulfill the hopes and promises of prior generations.

Supporting the Our Church, Our Legacy campaign is a way to ensure that our Diocese remains a strong, vital participant in the enduring legacy of Christian Armenia: a link between our local parishes and Holy Etchmiadzin. Between the Apostolic Age and the 21st Century. Between a past of great honor, distinction, and sacrifice and a future whose blessings we can only imagine.

ENSURE THAT OUR DIOCESE REMAINS STRONG

OUR CHURCH OUR LEGACY LISTENING TO YOUR VOICE How can the Diocese lend more SUPPORT TO YOUR LOCAL PARISH AND THE FAITHFUL? This was the question posed to clergy and lay leaders in the Spring of 2016. The special study tried to identify constructive ways to strengthen the vital partnership between the Diocese and its parishes, to advance the Armenian Church s mission among the people. Leaders from 33 parishes responded to our study. HERE IS WHAT YOU TOLD US Respondents clearly support the Diocese and its leadership. They would welcome a closer partnership and a stronger Diocesan network. Our parishes need new tools to support their ministry in the community. From these seeds, the Diocese has nourished a plan to help our local parishes grow and blossom. We seek to strengthen the position of the church in your community, working closely with parish clergy and lay leaders. Building on the indispensable work of our elder generations, we aim to honor their distinctive legacy of faith and service, and pass that spirit forward. The Diocese as a whole benefits when every parish is strong and confident. We are grateful to everyone who participated in the study.

A VISION FOR TOMORROW OUR CHURCH OUR LEGACY The survival of our people is NOTHING LESS THAN A MIRACLE Against all odds our Armenian Christian ancestors planted their ancestral church in the soil of America, and nourished a distinctive way of life. Surely this is evidence that our Lord has a plan for the Eastern Diocese and its many parishes. And we are called to play a role in that plan. That plan is a vision for the future: a vision where our Diocese can provide tools and training to our people, preserve our cultural heritage, and support our parishes. In this effort we aim to equip our members from pastors and lay leaders to parishioners and their families in the following areas: EDUCATION OF THE FAITHFUL Expanding the horizons of our people Ministry Development Clergy Continuing Education Stewardship Development Staff Development Best Practice Courses Technology

OUR CHURCH OUR LEGACY HOW AN ENDOWMENT WORKS AN ENDOWMENT IS AN INVESTMENT VEHICLE to ensure that an organization receives income in perpetuity Endowment contributions are distinct from annual giving. In particular, the principal of an endowment is not spent: it is grown through investment, with the beneficiary receiving an annual income distribution. Pledges to the endowment can be fulfilled over a longer period of time, with donors selecting a giving plan convenient to their circumstances. Donations are planned and can include cash, securities or other assets such as annuities, life insurance proceeds and IRAs. We are establishing the Our Church, Our Legacy endowment above all as an expression of hope and a way of passing on the legacy of our distinctive faith to future generations. That hope will become a reality thanks to the generosity, commitment, and conviction of people like you. The endowment funds will be deposited with The Armenian Church Endowment Fund (ACEF), which has a prestigious 40-year record as a professional asset manager. ACEF will hold and manage the endowment in a distinct account, separate from funds held directly by the Diocese. As pledges are fulfilled, they will be added to the endowment fund, which will be governed by an endowment agreement that sets forth the purposes for which the Diocese can use the funds. The Diocese will not have direct access to the principal of the endowment but rather will receive an annual distribution in accordance with ACEF's distribution policies.* The Diocese will be able to use that distribution to fund programs as described elsewhere in this brochure. Under ACEF s current distribution policy, if the endowment is funded at $15 million dollars, it can provide $675,000 per year in funding. Any annual income above the distribution amount will be reinvested to grow the principal of the fund. Over time, as the principal of the endowment increases, so does the income. *Currently, the annual distribution is 4.5% of an endowment's average total investment over the prior 12 quarters. The Diocese can move the funds to a different manager if it is not satisfied with the overall performance of ACEF. For information, please refer to www.acefinvest.org

OUR CHURCH OUR LEGACY WITH GRATITUDE.to Edward and Janet Mardigian for planting the seeds of this endowment campaign with a $3 million gift in 2012. This contribution one of the largest single donations ever given to the Diocese directly benefits the Department of Youth and Education. It was always the family s hope that it would be the launching point for a continuing campaign to strengthen the Armenian Church in America. The Mardigian family s legacy of generosity and service began decades ago in the Midwest region, at a time when Armenians were building churches after settling in the United States. My parents taught us to want to give back, recalls Edward Mardigian, Jr. They communicated that this country had been good to them, and so they wanted to give back to the community. Together Edward and Janet use the tools they learned from their parents, philanthropy and service, to help the Armenian people here in the U.S. and in Armenia. Time, talent, and treasure are resources everyone has the ability to give to their communities. The Mardigians hope to send this message to all Armenians and that their example will be an inspiration and motivation to others. The up-and-coming generation of Mardigians, Matthew and Grant, are following in their own parent s footsteps by serving on the family foundation board and carrying the mantle of the family s many benevolent works in the Armenian community and the broader society. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of host; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. Malachi 3:10
