That is true, but an incomplete understanding of the words first day. It was never called Sunday by the people of Israel in those days. They did not name their days after celestial bodies or pagan gods. The day Jesus rose from the grave was called yom rishone: in Hebrew or the first day. Calendar days in Judaism are simply In Sympathy: Our prayers and sympathy are extended to the Gary Metzger family due to the death of Gary s mother, Arline C. Metzger. Arline passed away on February 26 and a memorial service was held on March 11 in Salina, KS; she was 89 yrs. old. Gary, as you may recall, was a member of Zion s Outpost Restoration Branch [originally Webb Rd. RLDS] from early 1980s until the 1990s when he moved to Independence, MO. Yom Rishone means the first day, the chief day, the day of beginning. What significance does this have? It is significant because in Jewish teaching it is the day that God said, Let there be light. The resurrection happened on the same day that the universe was created. In the beginning there was F.Y.I. [The First Day quote continued from page 1] darkness. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep (Genesis 1:2 KJV). With the crucifixion and burial of Jesus, the lives of the disciples were as it was in the beginning, filled with darkness. In the beginning, the Spirit of God moved upon the waters. In the tomb, the Spirit moved upon the body of the Messiah. In the tomb God also said, in effect, Let there be light and there was light and there was life and there was resurrection. Darkness and death fled and a resounding hope and light returned to the world of the disciples and to all mankind. There was nothing before the first day of creation. Before the resurrection there was only darkness in the world, especially in Judea. With the coming of the first day, yom rishone, everything was made new. So it was with his resurrection, with the rising of his light, everything was suddenly made new again. It was a new beginning, a new hope of life eternal; the old life was gone. We have become new creatures in Jesus Christ. By Warren Bennett, printed in the The Latter Day Saint s Beacon, Vol. Eight, Issue 3, April-May 2016, page 6.
