Greetings Compatriots and Ladies, COMMANDERS COLUMN The Aynor Hoe Down was a tremendous success. My thanks go out to all who supported us and who participated. The Loris Bog-Off and Turkey Shoot are coming up soon. I hope to see the support of our camp as we get to work. We need to continue our recruiting efforts, and we need participation. Gentlemen, we have some of our Compatriots who have left our ranks. If you know someone who has left, ask them to come back and visit. And please, don t forget about your own dues. We need you as well. The talk of starting a new camp in Loris is no longer talk. The first meeting has been set, and we are about to see the third camp here in our county. It is long over due. It is my hope to see the full support of our camp as we grow through out our home. Our forefathers would be proud. Last year we sponsored a new camp in Myrtle Beach, the Horry Rough and Readys which has been a huge success. Let us pray for and work towards continued growth here in The Independent Republic of Horry County. Our ladies of the OCR have been planning a Remembrance Ball for February 16 th of next year. They have been sewing period dresses for this occasion. This ball will be open to all of us and our children. Please lend them all of your support and make plans to attend, as this fundraiser is for a worthy cause. I look forward to seeing all of you at our next meeting. Call a friend.. Call a fellow compatriot and invite them. Give them a ride if necessary. As we begin to finish our year up, we need to be planning for next year. I believe that our growth through out the county will be tremendous over the next few years. I have heard many quotes through the years, but my favorite has always been this. Duty is the most sublime word in our language. Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more. You should never wish to do less. This was supposedly in a letter from General Robert E. Lee to his son G. W. Custis Lee. Historians disagree on it s authenticity. I can not know the authenticity of this quote, but I do understand the meaning. As all of us continue to celebrate the sesquicentennial, we need to keep the fires lit and burning. It is our duty to bring more men into our ranks. It is our charge. May God bless you all They Shall Not Be Forgotten, Commander Litchfield 0132 LEADING THE CHARGE BY EXAMPLE Deo Vindice CAMP OFFICERS: Commander: 254-7320 Lieutenant Commander Paul Gause 241-0250 2nd Lieutenant: R.B. Lt. Commander s Report Greetings Compatriots, For your reading pleasure this October, a haunting story from Ghosts and Haunts of the Civil War: Apparently during the war there were reports from several Confederate regiments in the Western theater about just such a thing. One regiment in particular, a cavalry unit operating in southeaster Missouri, claimed they were haunted by a Black Boar of Doom. Whenever a cavalry trooper saw it the men of the unit knew he was going to die within the next seven days. Usually in action or as the result of a recent action. It was described as being monstrous in appearance; a huge boar, black as night with burning coals for eyes. Naturally there's always folks who don't believe in ghosts and who mock those who do. One trooper saw the Black Boar of Doom and mocked his fellow troopers. To him it was nothing more than an over grown, black razorback. And shortly after his seeing the beast the unit was involved in a major battle. The trooper came through the battle unscathed, something that he had to brag about to his friends because he'd seen the beast and come through the battle unharmed. Obviously there was no such thing if he could survive such a battle when all said the beast spelled his doom. Or was there? The following evening he and his friends were going over some captured weapons they'd taken in the battle, inspecting them. One of the men had captured a selfcocking, double-action revolver of a new make and model. The man wasn't familiar with it's workings and so accidentally discharged the weapon. The bullet struck the skeptic in the head, a kill shot. All within seven days of the man seeing the Black Boar of Doom. For the Cause, Paul Gause Historical Trivia Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They were told to 'go sip some Ale and listen to people's conversations and political concerns. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. 'You go sip here' and 'You go sip there.' The two words 'go sip' were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term 'gossip.' Contributed by Ed Thompson

Zakrzewski (W) The majority of Crosses of Honor that mark the final resting place of 229 of our ancestors were installed by the efforts of compatriots in Litchfield 132. These efforts include time spent working the tents at the Aynor Hoedown, Conway's Around the Fourth Festival, the Loris Bog Off (upcoming 20 October) & our turkey shoot. We all need to help with these efforts in order to continue the inertia we've built up over the last several years. Over 400 of our soldiers are lacking. Isn't it time for YOU to step up, become a Guardian, help with the fund raisers, clean & help maintain our cemeteries? We still have several cemeteries and numerous soldiers awaiting entrance into the program. It takes all of us working together to make this happen. Those already participating in the Guardian Program are allowed to adopt more than one soldier. Those considering becoming Guardians, there will never be a better time. Anyone interested please contact me and we ll make the arrangements. Call me or see me at the meetings with any questions & we ll find the answers. b. Scarborough 843-457-8600

Our Newest Member Compatriot Mr. Lee Gilley Welcome to Litchfield Camp 0132 Quartermaster Report Compatriots and Ladies, Being a member of a SCV camp we should all be willing to take charge and support each other to help raise money to pressure the dead Confederate soldier s graves. Litchfield camp members are you doing your job to help pressure and teach our ancestors heritage? It s our duty to pressure their legacy. The generosity and combined work force yielded a successful fund raiser at the Aynor Hoe Down. I deeply appreciate everybody who pitched in and helped. Being a member is more than just showing up at meeting; it s getting out in the public teaching and educating our Southern Heritage. To have a successful fund raiser it takes great volunteers and team work. I am extending an open invitation for volunteers to work at the Loris Bog Off. If you are able to work please email me with your hours of availability. Let s all join together and help Litchfield Camp 132 raise money to preserve our heritage and promote our new Loris Camp. You may ask why open a Loris Camp? My answer is why not? We need to move forwarded and spread the word near and far so all the adults and children will understand and learn about their Heritage. Today, the Sons of Confederate Veterans is preserving the history and legacy of these heroes so that future generations can understand the motives that animated the Southern Cause. The SCV is the direct heir of the United Confederate Veterans, and the oldest hereditary organization for male descendants of Confederate soldiers. Organized at Richmond, Virginia in 1896, the SCV continues to serve as a historical, patriotic, and non-political organization dedicated to ensuring that a true history of the 1861-1865 periods is preserved. Membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans is open to all male descendants of any veteran who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces. The first meeting for our Loris Camp will be November 5th at Grouper s Calabash, 4914 Broad St Loris SC. Plan to eat and fellowship from 6-7pm to be followed by a meeting at 7pm. Men, women and children welcomed. Come and bring a friend. Thank you, Dean Lewis Quartermaster Litchfield 132 Conway SC
