KOZ Monthly Outdoor Training May: Land and the Compass 7:30 Leader Meeting and Prayer time. This time is imperative and gives the leadership time to prepare their hearts for the meeting and time with the kids. Do not take this time lightly. Be on time, meet with God first. 8:30 Kids begin to arrive. Meet parents or guardian BEGINNING YOUR MEETING WITH KOZ STRUCTURE 8:45 Begin Meeting. All together say the American Pledge of Allegiance. KOZ Prayer: Lord, Thank you for making us strong and fierce warriors for you. We hunt, we fish and we share our faith with others. God Bless America. - Amen Work to get the boys to memorize the KOZ Prayer and use it as a tool for kids who have little experience in praying or are afraid to pray. (Before meals, before an adventure or other times as a reminder of who they are and what they represent). LEADING INTO YOUR OUTDOORS SKILLS TRAINING Leader s first questions/discussion. Outdoor Training Direction by compass. Have you ever been lost? You can get lost in the woods, the dessert or even a big parking lot. Even when you are trying to pay attention you can get mixed up and discombobulated. All outdoors men should know a few things for certain and knowing how to use directions, a compass and a map. Talk about : Any one have a compass? How does a compass work? Who knows how to use a map? Why would anyone need a compass? Why can t I just trust my GPS on my phone. Everyone close your eyes and point North. Materials Copyright 2016 - kidsoudoorzone.org - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512- 292-1113 1

Leader s first questions/discussion: Scripture Training LEADING INTO YOUR HEART TRAINING This Month's Scripture: Psalm 103:12, He has removed our sins as far away from us as the east is from the west. Leader s first questions/discussion, Bible training: When we are feeling like nobody cares, when we don t know what to do in a situation what are the things we need to remember? Life is not guaranteed to be easy or without hardships and we will at some point need someone or something to help. Do you have good friends you can count on for advice, prayer? Do you have an adult who can help you if you need it. If we sin, do something we know we should not, will God forgive us? What if it is really bad? Be thinking today, how do I ask God for forgiveness. NOTE: Let them talk leave time between when you say something and they can speak let it be silent for a while if you have to they grow close in times of quiet allow Him to come. BEGIN OUTDOOR SKILLS TRAINING: IDEA TRAIL Things to do this month: STOP & BEGIN OUTDOOR SKILLS TRAINING Build a compass course and teach them how to use it. (place distractions along the route as an example of how sin can distract us and how hard it can be to stay on course). Go to a local park and teach Geocaching. Create a map of an area, have the boys help then make them copies. Teach how to read maps and compass. Build a North, South, East, West marker from stone or other at your KOZ camp. *Note always add an EXTREME element to your KOZ day. Be creative. FIELD NOTES: The boys should learn how to navigate with tools other than their phones. A compass or Map is best. Teach them how to get back on course if they get off. Use different types of maps (topo, road etc.) Materials Copyright 2016 - kidsoudoorzone.org - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512- 292-1113 2

Other places for good information and literature. Here are some sites where we have found great content of this lesson plan. The internet always has resources but be careful there are some bad sites with poor information. We do not endorse nor are we associated with any of the sites listed below. The information there may change as well. Boy Scouts: Wilderness Survival Manual - see online Scouting.org Wilderness College: Compass Lessons and Info - http://www.wildernesscollege.com/how- to- read- a- compass.html GOING OFF THE TRAIL THIS MONTH? IMPORTANT: Use the opening/use the close, prayer/ sit spots and prayer cards. All groups should use the foundational structure of KOZ each month. The starting, the prayer, sit spots etc. as a common element to every meeting. Everything from sledding to swimming, hiking to fly fishing. The key to going off the trail is to keep the structure in place. Get them outside move their bodies, adventure and exploration. Keep it exciting, keep it real, be intentional about bringing them into a relationship with Christ. OUTDOOR TRAINING CONCLUSIONS Ask pointed questions on the outdoor skills they learned today. Drive home a point What was your favorite part of KOZ today? How does a compass work? Where is NSEW from where they are standing? Why would you need a compass if you have a GPS or phone? What is one thing you know about a map or a compass you learned today? Materials Copyright 2016 - kidsoudoorzone.org - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512- 292-1113 3

SCRIPTURE TRAINING AND HEART TAKEAWAY This Month's Scripture: Psalm 103:12, He has removed our sins as far away from us as the east is from the west. Trail Map #1, Psalm 103:12 Today we've learned a lot about the 4 directions North, South, East, and West. As we completed our compass course we used the compass to lead us and guide us so that we could find the markers on the course. The Bible, Holy Spirit and Christian friends are like that in our life. Did you see how badly we "guessed" at what direction was North? Can you imagine not having that compass today and how impossible it would have been to complete the course? What if you got your coordinates for the compass course and just put the compass down and quit using it? Would you have reached your goal? Our faith is just like that! If you use your relationship with God to lead you and guide in this life, you'll never get lost. God uses scripture, prayer and our Christian friends and family to lead us and guide us just like that compass did today. All to often we set aside our faith to walk and wonder through school and life without a guide. If that's been you, remember that forgiveness is a prayer away! All you have to do is ask with a sincere heart! If we ask God to forgive us for wandering and not using our compass, He says in Psalms 103:12 that He will throw our sin away as far as the East as to the West. That means He throws it away COMPLETELY! He LOVES us and wants to be our guide! Will you let Him today? RM Train Map #2, Psalm 103:12 can you imagine not having that compass today A lot of times we look at things like a compass as an antiques, old technology that has replaced by our GPS s or smart phones. And that may be the case until your phone battery dies or your GPS falls out of your pocket in to a mud puddle. Then what? History tells us that the first compass was invented as early as 206BC as in 200 years before Christ was born. That s over 2000 years ago and in that time this device has lead men on adventures across the unexplored oceans, guided men into battle, and saved countless lives. Over and over again this tool has proven affective in two ways main ways; it can serve as a guide in our travels but it can also serve as a tool to rescue us when we get lost. Do you know that when we ask Jesus into our hearts God gives us a tool that will do the same thing? Anyone know what that tool is? It s the Holy Spirit. God has placed His Spirit inside of each of us as a tool that will not only help guide us through life but will also help rescue us when we get off course. God s forgiveness and love Materials Copyright 2016 - kidsoudoorzone.org - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512- 292-1113 4

for us is something that we will never fully understand but just like this compass we can rest assure that His forgiveness and love is true and that it s something that is never going to change. WW Drive home a point What part of the bible lesson matches what we talked about in fire starting? How can you make your fire for Jesus bigger? What are some things you can do to keep your fire (belief in Jesus) from going out when things get hard in your life. We re all in a different place as a Christian so don t compare your fire to your buddies. Concentrate on your flame and feed your fire the fuel it needs to grow. REMIND THEM: God has made you as an amazing person. Individual, special and unique. If you have not heard that for a while, I want to tell you that. I care about you, you matter to me. Talk to me if you need to talk. EACH MONTH: Teach the boys: BE STRONG - Jeremiah 29:11, For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. He (Jesus) cares about you, you matter, your KOZ leaders care about you. THE SIT SPOT AND GOD SIT SPOT Purpose: Pass out a blank index card and pen. Tell them if they want you to pray for them or something going on to please write it on the card and you will pray for them this week. It is a private prayer between your leaders and them, they don't have to put their name on the card. If they don't have a prayer, tell them to just put their name on the cards. TO PONDER: Give the boys something to ponder, use the questions above, and ask them to go to a sit spot - let them stay while you prepare lunch (quietly without distracting the quiet moment) - (15-30 min.) SEND LEADERS TO SIT SPOTS! If a leader is not assigned a task have them also find a sit spot. It is good for the boys to see the adult leaders doing the same as they are asked to do. QUIET TIME IS ESSENTIAL. Materials Copyright 2016 - kidsoudoorzone.org - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512- 292-1113 5

CALL BACK FOR LUNCH - While they are eating lunch LUNCH & KOZ LEADERSHIP TAG GUIDANCE WORK ON DOG TAGS Ask boys if they are working toward KOZ TAGS. Greenhorn, Coyote, LIT, HTL. This is a good time to teach this material. Print their cards and have them ready. Ask if any of the boys are new give them their KOZ Nation dog tag (the first one) GIVE A BOY HIS NAME IN KOZ We have found that giving boys a nickname is a huge tool for them. Giving a boy a New Name has been a game changer for many. A strong, fierce name is important. Jesus and His Father both gave new names. Ask prayerfully what name a boy should have. The leaders decide NOT the boys. It is an honor bestowed, even if funny. As you wait for the parents to arrive: Tell the boys you love them. That they are important. That if they have not prayed to ask Christ into their hearts to come talk to a KOZ HTL (ROMANS 10:9). If a kid wants to be baptized, have them talk to you about it - you can do it somewhere really cool! Perform a service project on site. Teach the boys to ALWAYS leave your area BETTER than it was when you got there. Parents arrive. Greet them and tell them how good their kid did. Tell the boys to invite a friend! Hand out literature or take home materials... A gallon plastic Zip lock bag with their name on it works great each month to collect their take home materials.
