BIBLE STUDY After Jesus resurrection and His appearance to the disciples, seven of the disciples returned to Galilee, near the Sea of Galilee where Jesus had called four of His disciples to be fishers of men. (See Luke 5:1-11.) Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the son of Zebedee, and two other disciples went fishing. Perhaps they felt it reasonable to return to the fishing business since their stint as disciples was apparently over or so they thought! In Bible times, nighttime was the preferred time for fishing. Fish caught at night could be sold fresh in the morning at market. But by daybreak, the disciples had caught nothing. Jesus stood at the shore, but the disciples did not know it was Him. He called to them, Men, you don t have any fish, do you? (John 21:5). Then He urged them to cast their net on the right side of the boat. They obeyed, and they were unable to haul in the big catch! John, the disciple Jesus loved, knew right away who He was. It is the Lord! John exclaimed. Peter immediately tied his outer garment around him and jumped into the sea, swimming 300 feet to shore. When the other six disciples arrived in the boat, they found Jesus sitting beside a charcoal fire with fish and bread. Come and have breakfast, Jesus said. Jesus ate with His disciples; then He turned to Peter. John 21:15-19 describes Peter s restoration. The disciple who had told Jesus that he would die for Him (Luke 22:31-34) had denied Jesus three times. (Luke 22:54-62) Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved Jesus. Each time Peter responded yes, Jesus told Peter to feed His lambs. Jesus restored Peter to ministry. Emphasize to the preschoolers you teach that Jesus plan for the disciples did not end with His death and resurrection. When Jesus first called the disciples to follow Him, Jesus had promised to make them fishers of men. Instead of catching fish, they would tell people about Jesus. (Luke 5:1-11) The disciples had left Jesus when He was arrested, but Jesus still wanted to use them in God s plan to rescue people from their sin. Jesus is a Lord who forgives us and makes things right again. SUGGESTED THEME DECORATING IDEAS: Simulate a campaign headquarters with the slogan Go and Tell! Leader is wearing a hat labeled Go and Tell!] Leader Hello again! Thank you for being here. I m [your name]. You might remember that we are running a great campaign called Go and Tell! I am working with a team of people all of you to learn more about Jesus and to tell others about Him. I hope you are ready to hit the ground running. We have done a lot of work for this campaign already, but we are just getting started. In fact, today s Bible story will show us that Jesus task for His disciples was just beginning too! It would not be easy, but it would be good. Are you ready? WATCH THE BIBLE STORY (10 MINUTES) Place a bookmark at John 20 in your Bible. Invite a preschooler to open it. Reverently display the open Bible. Say The Bible is God s Word, and God s Word is true! Our Bible story today is found in the Gospel of John. The Gospels are in the New Testament and tell about when Jesus lived on earth. Show the video or tell the Bible story. Use the bolded version of the Bible story for young preschoolers. OPTIONAL BIBLE STORY SCRIPT Jesus Forgives and Restores John 21:1-19 Amazing things happened after Jesus died and came back to life. Jesus friends had seen Jesus with their own eyes! Then the friends left Jerusalem and went back to Galilee. Jesus friends were together at the sea. Peter said, I m going fishing. The other friends decided to go too. Many of the friends were good fishermen. They knew the best time to fish was at night. So the friends got into the boat and fished all night, but they did not catch any fish. Not even one! The next morning the sun was rising, and the friends could see a man on the seashore. The man called out to them, You don t have any fish, do you? No, they said. Put your fishing net into the water on the right side of the boat. Then you will catch some fish, the man said. The friends did what the man said, and they did catch fish! They caught a lot of fish so many that they could not even get the net back in the boat because it was so heavy. It is the Lord! John shouted. It was Jesus! Peter could not wait to see Jesus. He jumped into 2 // SESSION 3 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS

the sea and swam to shore. The other friends came along in the boat behind him, dragging the net full of fish. They saw there was fish cooking on a fire and bread to eat. Jesus said, Bring some of the fish you caught. Peter pulled the heavy net up to the shore. Come and have breakfast, Jesus said. Jesus took the bread and gave it to them, and then gave them the fish. No one asked Jesus who He was because they all knew it was their friend who had risen from the dead! After breakfast, Jesus asked Peter, Do you love Me more than My other friends? Yes, Lord. You know that I love You, Peter said. Feed My lambs, Jesus said. Jesus asked Peter again, Simon Peter, do you love Me? Yes, Lord. You know that I love You, Peter answered. Watch over My sheep, Jesus said. Jesus asked Peter one more time, Do you love Me? Peter was sad that Jesus had asked him again. He said, Lord, You know everything! You know that I love You. Feed My sheep, Jesus said. Then Jesus said, Follow Me! Timeline Poster Main Point Slide Christ Connection: When Jesus was arrested, His friends ran away. Jesus showed His friends that He still loved them and wanted them to follow Him. Sometimes we make mistakes as we follow Jesus too. Jesus rescued us from sin. We know He forgives us and wants us to keep following Him. TALK ABOUT THE BIBLE STORY (1 MINUTE) Big Picture question slides Say When Jesus was arrested, His friends ran away. Jesus showed His friends that He still loved them and wanted them to follow Him. Jesus forgave Peter and told him to care for His sheep. Have the kids answer with either a thumbs up or thumbs down for each question. Point to the Bible story picture as you ask the following review questions: 1. Before the friends saw Jesus, did they catch any fish? Yes (thumbs up) or no (thumbs down)? 2. After Jesus told them to throw the net out again, did they catch any fish? Yes (up) or no (down)? 3. How many times did Jesus ask Peter do you love me? (three times) 4. What did Jesus tell Peter to do after Peter said he loved Him? Catch more fish? (thumbs up) or care for His sheep, or His people (down)? 5. If we make mistakes, does Jesus want us to keep following Him? Yes (up) or no (down)? BIG PICTURE QUESTION (1 MINUTE) Say Jesus showed His friends that He still loved them and wanted them to follow Him. When they first met Jesus, He said He would make His friends fishers of men. Jesus did not mean His friends would catch people out of water like fish. He meant that by their telling people about Him, people would become followers of Jesus. What is our mission? Our mission is to tell others about Jesus. Key passage Key Passage song He Was Raised song KEY PASSAGE (5 MINUTES) Open your Bible to 1 Corinthians 15:4. Read the key passage aloud several times. Sing together the key passage song, He Was Raised. Say Our key passage tells us that Jesus rose from the dead three days after He was buried. The Bible said this would happen. Jesus is alive! PRAYER (2 MINUTES) Invite kids to pray before dismissing to small groups. DISMISS TO SMALL GROUP 3 // SESSION 3 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS

Welcome children and set out a few favorite theme-related toys, such as puzzles and blocks. heavyweight paper glue tape textured items ACTIVITY PAGE (10 MINUTES) Guide preschoolers to identify and circle the fish in each row that is different from the others. Say Jesus friends fished all night but did not catch any fish. A man on the seashore told them to put their net on the right side of the boat. They did, and they caught many fish! Can you guess who the man on the shore was? Find out in today s Bible story. 10 minutes after the start of service Break into groups of 10 or less children for Small groups yellow paper black paper tape ACTIVITY (10 MINUTES) Decide When do you... Post a sheet of yellow paper on one side of the room and a sheet of black paper on the other. Ask various questions about when preschoolers do certain things. If a preschooler does that thing during the day, he should move to the yellow paper. If he does that at night, he should move to the black paper. If a preschooler does that thing both during the day and at night, he may stand in the middle of the room. Use the suggested questions or create your own. When do you put on your pajamas? When do you eat lunch? When do you play on the playground? When do you watch a movie? When do you brush your teeth? When do you go to church? When do you go fishing? Say Jesus friends went fishing at night. Many of the friends were good fishermen. They knew the best time to fish was at night. The next morning, the men saw a man on the seashore. It was Jesus! Peter jumped out of the boat and swam to shore. Listen to our Bible story to hear what Jesus asked Peter. SNACK TIME Gather preschoolers for snack time. Thank God for the snack. Mention that Jesus cooked breakfast for His friends. When Jesus was arrested, His friends ran away. Jesus showed His friends that He still loved them and wanted them to follow Him. 4 // SESSION 3 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS

TRANSITION When a child finishes his snack, guide him to throw away any trash. He may select a book or puzzle to examine, play quietly with toys, or color the Journal coloring page. crayons Journal Page While preschoolers might not be ready to respond to the gospel, use this guide to help little minds begin to grasp big truths about Jesus and the kingdom of God. GOD IS KING. Ask: Who is in charge at home? Who is in charge over the whole world? Explain that God made everything! He is King over everything, and He is in charge. WE SINNED. Ask: Have you ever done something wrong? Tell preschoolers that everyone sins, or disobeys God. Our sin makes God sad. GOD SENT JESUS. Explain that God must punish sin. He loves us and He sent His Son, Jesus, to earth. Jesus came to take away the punishment for sin. JESUS LOVES. Ask: Do you like presents? Explain that Jesus gives us the best present. He never did anything wrong, but He was punished in our place. Jesus wants to take away our sin because He loves us. Pray that God will save your preschoolers. As you faithfully teach the Bible, you are planting gospel seeds in children s hearts. Ask God to grow the preschoolers into children who love and trust in Jesus. JOURNAL PAGE AND PRAYER Offer the journal page and invite preschoolers to draw a picture of a sheep. Remind preschoolers that Jesus forgave Peter and told Him to care for His sheep, or His people. Sometimes we make mistakes as we follow Jesus too. Jesus rescued us from sin. Jesus forgives us and gives us a job to do. What is our mission? Our mission is to tell others about Jesus. Pray for the children. Say God, You are so kind to forgive us. We make so many mistakes, but You love us no matter what. You not only forgive our sin, but You give us a job to do. Thank You that we get to tell everyone how amazing You are. Help us to do that. Amen. THE GOSPEL: GOD S PLAN FOR ME Use Scripture and the guide provided in the classroom to explain to boys and girls how to become a Christian. Assign individuals to meet with kids who have more questions. If this is not possible, encourage boys and girls to ask their parents, leader, or other Christian adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian. 5 // SESSION 3 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS Jesus Forgives and Restores John 21:1-19 Amazing things happened after Jesus died and came back to life.
