HAPPENING Hello summer time! It s that time of year again when we start looking for things to do inside to hide from the Texas heat. We have been staying busy with our garden in the mornings trying to make sure we keep enough water on it to keep the tomatoes and herbs producing for us. The garden club has been doing a great job of keeping the plants watered and happy. This month you will find us staying busy with activities that keep us indoors in the air conditioning. We re playing lots of games, making ice cream treats, crafting and watching movies in our movie theater to help beat the heat. Father s Day is on Sunday June 17th, don t forget to give thanks to all of our wonderful fathers out there. Do you have a special talent that you would like to share with our residents? Do you enjoy playing games, reading aloud or doing arts & crafts? Can you sing or play an instrument? If so, we are always looking for new friends to come and have fun with us! If you are interested in joining in on the fun please be sure to contact our Engagement Coordinator April Caropepe. As always, be safe, stay cool and enjoy the beginning of your summer! Happy Father s Day! An afternoon movie matinee is a great way to escape the Texas heat and enjoy time with friends. We are fortunate to have our own movie style theater here at Arbor House. Above left & right : Here we are making yarn octopuses in crafts. It was simple enough, but more time consuming than we originally thought. But boy they sure turned out cute! The ladies did a wonderful job creating these little dolls! Below left : Happy hour is always a great time to just sit relax and visit with friends. Below right : The Trilogy Clarinets came and tickled our ears with their beautiful instruments. Below : We had tables full of goodies in the dinning room for the Arbor House Arbor Bucks Sale! It didn t take long for everyone to show up with their Arbor Bucks in hand ready to do some shopping!

June is the sixth month of the year on the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Doesn t seem like everyone gets married in June? It s said that June is named for Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage, so some consider it good luck to be married during this month. Others claim the month gets its name from the Latin iuniores, or younger ones. This makes sense since May, the preceding month, comes from maiores, or elders. Birthstone Pearl The pearl is a unique birthstone. All other birthstones are formed by inorganic substances, such as rocks, but pearls are created by a living thing a mollusk, such as a clam or an oyster. A pearl is actually a mollusk s defense mechanism, protecting it from parasites or other attacks. When an irritant, such as a piece of sand or other organism, gets inside the mollusk s shell, the mollusk secretes an iridescent substance called nacre (also known as mother of pearl ) and coats the irritant to seal it off. Most pearls sold today are cultured, meaning they are cultivated by pearl farmers. Pearls come in all shapes and sizes, and even colors, ranging from whites and blacks to creamy pinks and purples and even gold. The color depends on the kind of mollusk and it s habitat. The pearl is a symbol of loyalty, fidelity and friendship. Flower Rose The flower for the month of June is the rose. The rose has been called the queen of flowers and is known as a symbol of love. Its name comes from the Latin word rosa, which means red. Since primitive times, the rose has been used in perfumes, medicines and even foods. Recently, archaeologists discovered the fossilized remains of wild roses over 35 million years old. In the language of flowers, each color has its own meaning. A white rose means purity or innocence, a red rose means love and romance, and a pink rose means happiness. While the sharp objects along a rose stem are commonly called thorns, the technical term is prickles. The prickles help the rose hang onto other vegetation when growing and climbing. June -North and South June in the northern hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent of December in the southern hemisphere and vice versa. It s the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the northern hemisphere and the shortest daylight hours in the southern hemisphere. What s Lucky in June? Arbor House Assisted Living, provides a beautiful home for you in a friendly, secure and supportive environment. Your privacy, dignity, and independence will be respected and promoted by a warm and caring staff. Your sunlit home includes a flowering courtyard, movie theater, and coffee shop where neighbors share friendships and good times. Residents enjoy the comfort of being catered to with services such as three delicious meals each day served restaurant style, weekly laundry and housekeeping, planned group activities, and assistance as needed with personal care such as bathing, dressing, grooming and walking. Arbor House also has a dedicated community for residents with memory care needs. Our Evergreen community has been designed based on the most common and relevant studies and is dedicated to creating an environment that promotes independence and dignity for those managing dementiacausing diseases such as Alzheimer s. For example, we use orange dinning ware, which studies tells us improves appetite. In addition, a persons ability to visually process the food on the plate can be affected by the journey of the disease, and this contrast can make eating easier and reduce mealtime stress. For people managing dementia a structured and purpose-filled day reduces stress and sun downing. Our engagement program Life in Motion, offers a consistent routine to increase independence and to provide our residents joy, purpose, and connection.
