3 RD Meal Question Reuven and Leah went out several times on a series of shidduch dates, until finally Leah decided that he wasn t the right boy for her and turned him down. Reuven was furious and decided to take revenge on her. He came up with a scheme, through which he could take revenge at the same time on a fellow bachur in his Yeshiva, Shimon, with whom he also had a score to settle. Feigning friendship with Shimon, he approached him one day to suggest a shidduch between him and none other than Leah herself. Reuven praised her as a wonderful girl who was perfect for Shimon and even added that he had already suggested it to Leah s parents, who had agreed for them to meet. (Of course this was entirely untrue. Reuven fabricated the story to trap Shimon and Leah in an embarrassing situation.) Shimon was interested, and after doing some investigation in Leah and her family, agreed to meet her at her home, at the date and time that Reuven claimed to have arranged. It was a long trip to Leah s home, but finally Shimon arrived. He knocked on the door and waited for a few moments in nervous anticipation, until finally Leah s father opened the door. Yes, Can I help you? he asked. Shimon was not sure how to respond. It was certainly an odd greeting for a prospective shidduch. Perhaps Leah s father was just nervous and needed help breaking the ice. I am the shidduch that was suggested for your daughter. Shimon explained. Shidduch? What Shidduch? asked Leah s father. You must have the wrong address. Shimon turned white with embarrassment. He showed Leah s father the address, which was indeed correct. Who arranged this shidduch? Leah s father asked. My friend Reuven arranged it, answered Shimon. He said that he spoke to you about it and set this time for me to come. Leah s father began to realize what must have happened, and how lucky his daughter was to be saved from the hands of such a cruel prankster. He invited Shimon in for a drink, and tried to ease the embarrassment of the situation with some friendly conversation. As they spoke, Leah s father was impressed with Shimon s good nature, yiras Shamayim, and level of Torah learning. Perhaps if you are here anyway, there is nothing to lose by your meeting Leah for an impromptu date, suggested her father. The two met, enjoyed each other s company, and after a few meetings got engaged. When Reuven found out that his plan had backfired, and he had brought joy to his enemies instead of sorrow, he tried to make the best of a bad situation by demanding that they pay him shadchan fees for introducing them. Shadchan fees? they asked incredulously. After playing such a cruel trick, he has the nerve to demand a shadchan fee? Who is Right? Find out at Shalosh Seuda with Rabbi Rothman
