To Prophet or Not to Prophet When we think of prophets, we often think of a soothsayer speaking the future, like the blind prophet from the Odyssey. (Or the witches from Macbeth, or maybe the Blind Seer from O Brother Where Art Thou?). Actually, what a prophet does is speak truth. Even when the truth hurts, even when it is a truth no one wants to hear. Similar to how you know at what point your favorite team will lose the game, a prophet only tells the future that is evident based on the status quo. A prophet knows that unless the relief pitcher is amazing, being down six runs in the eighth inning means the game is all but lost. Needless to say, prophets are not particularly popular. In high school, the prophet would be the one voted most likely to rain on your parade. The prophets of the Old Testament used powerful language to get their message across. They were faced with people bull-headedly turning from the covenant with God. They used some images that most people find, to put it delicately, odd. (Check out chapter 13 of Jeremiah. Odd.). Their methods were shocking because they felt it was the only way to get their point across. If they did not make people listen, no one would listen. In the first reading, Malachi, the prophet, has some scary threats against the Temple priests. Jesus, also a prophet, has some harsh words for the Pharisees and scribes in the Gospel reading. I am sure we all know people like the scribes and the Pharisees in the Gospel. They like to go on and on about how great they are even though you may never have seen them do a nice thing for another person. They judge others while never examining their own lives. When you are in a room with them, your eyes glass over and you smile and nod, say sure when you can get a word in, all the while making your grocery list in your head. Just once, it would be great to look that person in the eye and say, Hey! Get off your bum, quit blowing hot air and do something useful for a change! That is exactly what a prophet does. That is where we have to make a choice: to be prophets or yes men. Being a prophet is never a popular position look how it worked out for Jesus. Can we really afford to look at the alternative, though? Think about all the problems our society is facing because of the Pharisees of our world. Who else, if not us our Church and our community, right here in Winnetka and Glencoe is going to stand up to them? The idea of standing up is daunting if not completely terrifying. That is why we have a prayer like today s psalm: O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time on and forevermore. (Ps 131:3) We do have hope because we trust in God. The Holy Trinity stands with us. Like our ancestor in faith Malachi and our Savior Jesus, we can look injustice in the eye and say, Have we not all one father? Has not one God created us? Why then are we faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our ancestors? (Mal 2:10). ~ Carol Nowatzke
