Page 2 Our Lady of Peace October 25th, 2015 From Our Pastor Dear Parishioners, This Sunday s Gospel presents the extraordinary story of Christ s healing of a blind man. Unlike many other miracles of Jesus, the person that is cured is named; his name is Bar maeus. The Gospel begins by saying that Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd (Mk 10:46). Certainly, Jericho was a city in Jesus me, in fact, one of the oldest. But for any biblical person Jericho meant more than just a city East of Jerusalem. For Jericho was destroyed by the Israelites as they came to take possession of the Promised Land led by Joshua, so it symbolized sin or dysfunc on. Then, for anyone in Jesus me reading today s gospel, the fact that Jesus was leaving Jericho meant all kinds of associa ons. Si ng by the gate of this city was Bar meaus, Timaeus son, a blind man who was by the wall of Jericho begging. This man I dare to say- symbolize all of us who to varying degrees- live in the city of sin, who live in this dysfunc onal place. I mean violence, self-absorp on, hatred and all those things opposed to God. As a result we are blind spiritually and we do not see what we are meant to see. We do not see the ways of God. Furthermore, Bar maeus is a beggar. And we spiritually speaking- are all beggars. Sin is a problem we cannot solve on our own. We are blind and we are beggars. We need to beg to be saved. So today I invite you to iden fy yourselves with Bar meaus, and that is the point that Mark is also making in today s Gospel. As we con nue reading we come to this beau ful detail of Mark s Gospel: On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, son of David, have pity on me. (Mk 10:47) Bar meaus realizes he is a beggar, that he is blind and that he has to beg. One of the major spiritual problems people has is that they don t realize that. They think all is well or that all can be made well by our own efforts. That is what our secularized culture teaches us but not the Gospel. No ce that many rebuked him and told him to be silent. (Mk 10:48) Symbolically speaking, Mark is telling us that once you acknowledge your blindness and you acknowledge before Christ your incapacity to save yourself: don t expect a lot of support! We live in a culture that is very me-centric, we love people that are powerful, that are self-reliant, who likes someone who is a beggar? The world won t stand by you. But s ll Bar meaus kept calling out all the more: Son of David, have pity on me. (Mk 10: 48) Despite the crowd, despite of the lack of support he kept calling out. That is a good advice for anyone of us. Keep asking, keep begging. Think how o en perseverance in prayer is recommended in the Gospel: Seek and you will find. Knock and it will open unto you. Ask and you will receive. Don t give up! Then, Jesus stopped and said, Call him, says the Gospel. Bar meaus is being called out of his blindness, out of Jericho into a new way of being, which means friendship with Jesus Christ. He is the prototype of anyone of us who is member of the Church. We have been called by Jesus out of Jericho into this new friendship. Take courage; get up, he is calling you. (Mk 10: 49) What a magnificent line of the Gospel! Bar meaus throws off his old cloak symbolizing his old life- he springs up and comes to Jesus. Then, the Gospel con nues: Jesus said to him in reply, What do you want me to do for you? The blind man replied to him, Master, I want to see. (Mk 10: 51) His problem is blindness, born of sin, born of self-absorp on. What s the solu on? Sight. How do you get it? Not by your own efforts, you cannot make yourself un-blind, but you can come to Jesus who can give you sight. So immediately he receives sight and the Gospel finishes with this beau ful words: [He] followed him on the way. (Mk 10:52) He began in blindness and in the city of sin but confessing his incapacity to regain sight he approaches our Lord and begging him to be cured his sight is restored and he is now able to walk the path of discipleship, going up to Jerusalem to the Cross. Re-read this gospel: the whole spiritual life is there in a nutshell. May God bless you all! Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE Announcements We joyfully welcome all visitors to the Shrine!
