Trinity Presbyterian Church 2125 Tower Drive Woodbury, MN 55125 September 2018 PATHWAYS A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor. (Proverbs 22.9 NRSV) Proverbs 22.9 Generous hands are blessed hands because they give bread to the poor. (Eugene Peterson, The Message) As the summer draws to a close and fall slowly joins us, I keep thinking about all the amazing things this congregation does! I think about the many lives that are touched in big and small ways, some planned, some unexpected, but all beautiful. It is because you are a generous congregation, generous with your time and money. You see a need and you give. You make a commitment and you honor that promise. William C. Green writes, Generosity is holistic: holy and whole. The bottom line is that God is the Power, the Life-Force, of the universe in whose vitality we love and move and have our being (Acts 17.28). Heart, soul, mind, and strength we are givers, created as expressions, images, of the generosity that is God. You are invited to consider a new way of being a Christian. Consider participating in a new mission opportunity. For example, consider teaching Sunday school once every other month, or help Wednesday evenings with the youth. Knit a prayer shawl. Serve coffee. Be a Sunday morning greeter or usher or liturgist or share the children s message or run the technology. Bake bread for communion. Join a committee. So many options, so many needs. Join with us as we seek to care for each other and the community. We need everyone to contribute so this community of faith can thrive, but also so that you can spiritually thrive. What do you need to nourish and nurture your soul? Let s work together to build a strong church, a strong community of faith, a strong city, and strong individuals. As Sister Luke says, Money. You have it and we need it. So please give. Give of your time, talent, and financial resources. Grace to you, and peace, April INSIDE THIS ISSUE A Message from Rev. T H A N K S T O E V E R Y O N E F O R S C H O O L S U P P L I E S!!! Your generosity will relieve the worries of low income and homeless parents as they prepare their kids for the start of a new year. Interfaith Action of Greater St. Paul will distribute our donated "school tools" to families in need. Many thanks! MEET TYLER HOLM - MISSION WORKER SUPPORTED BY TRINITY All are invited on September 13 th to meet Tyler Holm and hear about his life and work in Malawi, Africa. Mission & Action Committee will serve a light supper from 5pm 7pm. Tyler will give 2 identical ½ hour presentations: one from 5:30-6:00 and the other from 6:30-7:00. We know it's committee night, but we hope folks will make time for a bite to eat and to hear Tyler's message. We know people's schedules are busy, but this is a unique opportunity to get to know our mission worker in person. We know youth activities are gearing up, but having just been on a mission trip, Tyler's work shows us another way of being the hands and feet of Christ. We hope to see you there! Shopping Made Easier With Scrip! Scrip Orders Due Sept. 2 2 The Scrip s program offers gift cards from hundreds of stores, gas stations, hotels, spas, movie theaters, etc. The price is the value of the card but the church gets a rebate of between 2% and 9% (or even 12% in some cases) of the price. You get the full value of your gift cards and the church earns between 2% and 9%. SO the church can make some money from each gift card bought through the program for items you would buy anyway. Perfect for Graduations, Birthdays, Weddings. The process is simple. Review the vendor list to get an idea for the gift cards you would like to purchase. Turn in your completed order form with check payable to the church to the office. If our orders are entered on Monday, we can have the gift cards to distribute on Sunday. Orders will be due to the church office on the first Sunday of the month (orders will be placed on Monday).

A MESSAGE FROM JOA SEVLIE, CE I love new beginnings! I am always sure that this time I am going to get my whole life in order. Somehow, I have never lost that optimism. We are on the brink of a new beginning here at Trinity: our fall kick-off. After a summer of mission trips, camping trips, parades, 1-1 s, and cookouts, we are about to launch into the school year of 2018-2019. I am excited about this upcoming new school year; our numbers of participants have continued to rise over the last six years to where we are at a place where we will soon need to divide our 6 th 8 th graders into a junior high ministry and our 9 th 12 th graders into a senior high ministry. We have new junior leaders Josh Anderson and Stephanie Sharp signed on for the year to help teach and lead programming. Our pre-k to 5 th graders program also continues to grow; in a year or two it would be nice to have a separate curriculum for our 3 and 4 year-olds. We continue to fill the gaps in our programs: this year we are introducing Sunday School for our 6 th 12 th graders With all of our growth, we are in need of new teachers! Trinity s current curriculum was written to be extremely easy. When you come to teach, everything you need is included in a bin in your classroom. From scissors to tape to glue dots, from the snack to the game or activity, from questions and comments to make the lesson hit home for our students, it is all in there. If a teacher wishes to prep ahead of time, that is great, but, in all reality, often life gets too busy to add one more thing, so if a teacher needs to, he or she can just slip in and easily teach the class. If this is of interest to you, just give Joa a call at (612) 310-3992, or at church, and I will demo our curriculum. 4
