Ask A Priest Q: When I was growing up, I o en heard my grandmother blame the devil for all of the various things going wrong in the world. As an adult, I never seem to hear men on of the devil. Is there a devil? What are we supposed to believe about his role in our lives? A: I think this is a brilliant ques on. Our human nature is such that we desire to be in control of every aspect of our lives. As a result, we usually reject any no on that there could be an outside influence pu ng pressure on us. The idea that the devil made me do it is mostly looked on with scorn and contempt. In the same breath, however, we human beings do not like to take responsibility for our ac ons. Think of the student with her report card; look mom; I got an A... that mean teacher gave me an F. The devil, therefore, can o en be introduced as a scapegoat for our moral failings, enabling us to avoid accountability. As Catholics, we believe in the existence of the devil. Scripture a ests to the role of this character, iden fied as both the devil and Satan (see, for example Jn 8:44; Rev 12:9). The Church s Tradi on iden fies Satan as a fallen angel. According to the Fourth Lateran Council, Satan and the other demons were at first good angels, made by God, but they became evil by their own doing. Scripture speaks of a sin of these angels (see 2 Peter 2:4). This fall consists in the free choice of these created spirits, who radically and irrevocably rejected God and His reign (CCC, 392). Not only does Satan hate God, but he also has a special hatred for humanity. As the Catechism points out, behind the disobedient choice of our first parents lurks a seduc ve voice, opposed to God, which makes them fall into death out of envy (391). It is the mission of Satan and the rest of the fallen angels to lead all human beings out of a right rela onship with God, so that we might fall into everlas ng death. But what about all this business of not taking responsibility for our ac ons? Can we ever jus fy our bad behavior by saying, The devil made me do it? The answer, of course, is no but it is perhaps a li le more complicated than we realize. As a prac cal example, let us use alcoholism. A person is arrested for drunk driving, which resulted in the death of an innocent bystander. During the subsequent trial, it is revealed that this person is an alcoholic, that his parents exposed him to alcohol when he was a child, and that his addic on has progressed to the point that he cannot perform even the most basic func ons without being drunk. Is he responsible for the death of the bystander? Did his alcoholism make him kill that other person? From a moral standpoint, we should acknowledge the extenua ng circumstances limi ng his culpability. But we also must acknowledge that what he did was wrong, and that he could have chosen differently. While the alcohol affected his choice, it was s ll his choice. The devil operates in much the same way. As human beings, we have a built-in tendency toward selfishness and sin (called concupiscence; the result of original sin). If we are not paying a en on in the everydayness of our lives, we naturally tend to fall back into this state of affairs. The devil provides a seduc ve voice, encouraging us to return to the comforts of sin. This is why it some mes seems that we constantly fall back into the same sinful pa ern me and me again, even though we promised to avoid that tempta on in the future. At mes, it might feel that the devil is too powerful for us to handle. It is in these moments, however, that we need to remember that the Devil is just a creature; that God is the Creator. As Creator, it is God who is all powerful, not Satan. God offers us grace, the gi of His help, to help us get out of our pa ern of sin, and avoid future tempta ons. We first received this grace at our bap sm, which wiped us clean from original sin. We receive grace whenever we approach the sacraments (so come to Confession, come to the Eucharist!), whenever we pray, whenever we open our hearts to the Lord, and call upon His merciful love. Satan is real, and he hates us. He is constantly working at turning us away from God. But he is not omnipotent, and he is not able to force us to do anything. Let us, therefore, con nue to turn ourselves over to God, and receive His grace which strengthens us in our fight against the Evil One. Peace, Fr. Mike January 28, 2018 Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time 9
