Brashear contain correspondence, manuscripts, notes, clippings, student papers, and articles of Margaret M. Brashear, who was a professor of English at the University of Missouri. She taught classes on Mark Twain and Missouri literature and wrote several books and articles. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Margaret M. Brashear in June of 1963 (Accession No. 245). BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Margaret M. Brashear was born in 1874 in Brashear, Missouri. She was educated at Northeast Missouri Normal School in Kirksville and graduated in 1892. She attended Radcliffe College in 1897-1898, and summer school at Oxford in 1910. She received an A.B. degree from the University of Missouri in 1922 and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina in 1930. After teaching for three years in public high schools in Missouri and Montana, she taught English for three years in Beaver College in Pennsylvania; at Kirksville Teachers College, 1904-1914; the University of Idaho, 1914-1919; and the University of Missouri, 1919-1944. She retired and moved to her father s home in Kirksville, Missouri, where she died in 1963. Besides numerous articles on Missouri literature and Mark Twainiana, she published in 1934, Mark Twain, Son of Missouri. In 1959 she co-authored with Robert M. Rodney the Art, Humor, and Humanity of Mark Twain. Dr. Brashear was a member of the Association of University Professors of the Modern Language Association, Pi Lambda Theta, and Delta Kappa Gamma educational fraternities.
