The Word of God Voluntary Fugue, B-Flat major J. S. Bach Please stand Hymn 775 Give thanks for life SINE NOMINE Opening Acclamation: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and forever. Amen. There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God s call to us; One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; One God and Father of all. The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading Proverbs 1:20-33 A reading from book of Proverbs Wisdom cries out in the street; in the squares she raises her voice. At the busiest corner she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? Give heed to my reproof; I will pour out my thoughts to you; I will make my words known to you. Because I have called and you refused, have stretched out my hand and no one heeded, and because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when panic strikes you, when panic strikes you like a storm, and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently, but will not find me. Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord, would have none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof, therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way and be sated with their own devices. For waywardness kills the simple, and the complacency of fools destroys them; but those who listen to me will be secure and will live at ease, without dread of disaster. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 19 Coeli enarrant Tone 5 The Cantor sings the first portion of the verse, all sing the second portion. 4 The heavens declare the glory of / God, * And the firmament / shows his handiwork. One day tells its tale to an/other, * And night imparts knowledge / to another. Although they have no words or / language, * And their / voices are not heard. Their sound has gone out into / all lands, *

And their message to the / ends of the world. The law of the Lord is perfect and re/vives the soul; * the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom / to the innocent. The statutes of the Lord are just and re/joice the heart; * the commandment of the Lord is clear and gives / light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for/ever; * the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous / altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, more than much / fine gold, * sweeter far than honey, than / honey in the comb. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your / sight; * O Lord, my strength and / my redeemer. The congregation stands to sing: The Cantor intones the Alleluia, All repeat it. The cantor sings the verse. All repeat the alleluia. Alleluia TIBI, CHRISTE, SPLENDOR PATRIS Tone 8 Verse: How dear to me are your dwellings, O Lord of hosts! My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. Gospel Mark 8:27-38 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, Who do people say that I am? And they answered him, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets. He asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered him, You are the Messiah. And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Please sit Sermon The Rev. Wes Smedley 5

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. At the following words, the touches the water Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The Baptism The candidates are presented by name to the, who pours water upon, the candidate, saying Georgia, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. All Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. 8

Deacon Georgia, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ's own for ever. Amen. The Candidates are presented with a lit baptismal candle, saying Receive the light of Christ. Let us welcome the newly baptized. We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Please sit Greetings and Announcements Offertory Let us walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God. We make our lives a living offering, that God s kingdom may come here on earth, in Chicago, as it is in heaven. Offertory The Apple Tree K. Lee Scott The tree of life my soul hath seen, laden with fruit, and always green, the trees of nature fruitless be compared with Christ the apple tree. His beauty doth all things excel: by faith I know, but ne'er can tell the glory which I now can see in Jesus Christ the apple tree. For happiness I long have sought and pleasure dearly I have bought: I missed of all; but now I see 'tis found in Christ the apple tree. I'm weary with my former toil, here I will sit and rest awhile: under the shadow I will be, of Jesus Christ the apple tree. This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, it keeps my dying faith alive; which makes my soul in haste to be with Jesus Christ the apple tree. Anonymous The Doxology TALLIS CANON 9

The Holy Communion The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Blessed are you, lord God, our light and our salvation; to you be glory and praise for ever. From the beginning you have created all things and all your works echo the silent music of your praise. In the fullness of time you made us in your image, the crown of all creation. You give us breath and speech, that with angels and archangels, and all the powers of heaven we may find a voice to sing your praise: Hymn S-129 Sanctus & Benedictus William Mathias How wonderful the work of your hands, O Lord. As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own. When they turned away and rebelled your love remained steadfast. From them you raised up Jesus our Savior, born of Mary, to be the living bread, in whom all our hungers are satisfied. He offered his life for sinners, and with a love stronger than death he opened wide his arms on the cross. On the night before he died, he came to supper with his friends and, taking bread, he gave you thanks. He broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave thanks to you and said: Drink this, all of you, this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. 10

Father, we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon this cross; we remember his dying and rising in glory, and we rejoice that he intercedes for us at your right hand. Pour out your Holy Spirit as we bring before you these gifts of your creations; may they be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy things in your presence, form us in the likeness of Christ, and build us into a living temple to your glory. As our Savior taught us, so we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. F or thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread and Invitation to Communion We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ. We who are many are one Body, for we all share in the one Bread. Fraction Anthem - Hymn 867 Communion Hymn 309 O food to pilgrims given O WELT, ICH MUSS DICH LASSEN O food to pilgrims given, O bread of life from heaven, O manna from on high! We hunger; Lord, supply us, nor thy delights deny us, whose hearts to thee draw nigh. O stream of love past telling, O purest fountain, welling from out the Savior's side! We faint with thirst; revive us, of thine abundance give us, and all we need provide. O Jesus, by thee bidden, we here adore thee, hidden in forms of bread and wine. Grant when the veil is risen, we may behold, in heaven, thy countenance divine. Please stand. Post-Communion Prayer Let us pray. Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now in the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 11

Please sit Birthdays and Anniversaries O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on your servants as they begin another year. Our goal is to get to know one another more deeply as people of faith; share our stories, and to be reminded of God s command to us to Break the Silence. The retreat will take place at St. Paul and the Redeemer, at 4945 S. Dorcester. There is no cost to attend, but we do suggest a $10 donation for lunch. You are also encouraged to order your own copy of the book before the retreat: https://www.amazon.com/interrupting-silence-gods- Command-Speak/dp/0664263593 Please RVSP by October 17: Lydia@saintc.org, 312-944-1083, or messiahstbarth@comcast.net When Home Won't Let You Stay By James A. James will present his poignant traveling exhibit about refugees in America, as well as community programs about the refugee crisis. whenhomewontletyoustay.org What is an Artist-in-Residence and why here? An artist-in-residence is a member of the local art community in Chicago. We are partnering with artists whose work is intended to engage with the public in public spaces instead of sitting in a protected gallery. Visual art has the potential to bring the sacred out of the church sanctuary and into the world. And the church has the potential to bring the secular world into the sacred space of a worshipping community. Vocational discernment is the most basic and essential expression of a meaningful life and the church's mission. This conversational series aims to encourage a renewed commitment to the ageless Christian discipline of vocational discernment as the foundation of all ministry, a discipline and responsibility of all the baptized, individually and collectively. Capital Campaign Updates and News Exciting news! We have completed a new Day School/Sunday School classroom! A note from Headmistress Judy Caraher: "The Day School is happy to report the successfully completed conversion of one of the Sunday School classrooms to a beautifully equipped classroom that will accommodate 11 of our Full Day Fours students. We are happy to have a growing enrollment that has required us to expand to meet the demand of our families." We remain deeply grateful to the many members who have stepped up with Leadership Gifts in support of the Campaign. While we have $7.5 million to go, we cannot contain our excitement! A successful campaign will mean more functional and missional space for outreach programs; expanded Day School classrooms, programs and scholarships; and stewardship of our historical and aging building. With God s blessing and your participation, this is possible. Completed tuck-pointing and masonry repairs on exterior envelope We ask that you give prayerful thought to how you can help ensure our success. Please take our calls and accept our invitations to discuss our plans. We want you to participate in a way that feels most meaningful to you and your family. Questions? Please contact: Fran Caan, Advancement Director or Mary Ellen Christy, Founding Headmistress, The Day School 312-944-1083 The new Day School/Sunday School 19 classroom, expanding our student capacity.
